True Grit
willhelm
by willhelm  6-19-2009    3
November 27, 1931: Concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein impresses a Vienna audience with his performance of Maurice Ravel’s Concerto for the Left Hand. The pianist refused to give up his career after losing his right arm in World War I. 1981: John Kennedy Toole is posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for A Confederacy of Dunces. His gritty mom, Thelma Ducoing Toole, had enlisted the initially skeptical Walker Percy to help get the book published after Toole’s suicide. 1993: Andrew Wiles announces that after many years of work he has solved the seemingly unsolvable Fermat’s Last Theorem. Mathematicians discover a small error, but Wiles resolves it within another year. October 2008: After a decade spent lobbying, high school dropout Alvin Sykes sees the Emmett Till Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act " named for the black teenager brutally murdered in 1955 for reportedly whistling at a white woman in Mississippi " signed into law, largely because of his relentless efforts.

Obama and Ayers: A Radical Pentagon Bomber NYTimes
merrie
by merrie  10-4-2008
Since earning a doctorate in education at Columbia in 1987, Mr. Ayers has been a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the author or editor of 15 books, and an advocate of school reform. Steve Chapman, a columnist for The Chicago Tribune, defended Mr. Obama’s relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his longtime pastor, whose black liberation theology and “God damn America” sermon became notorious last spring. But he denounced Mr. Obama for associating with Mr. Ayers, whom he said the University of Illinois should never have hired. “I don’t think there’s a statute of limitations on terrorist bombings,” Mr. Chapman said in an interview. The Schools Project The Ayers-Obama connection first came to public attention last spring, when both Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama’s Democratic primary rival, and Mr. McCain brought it up. the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge at the University of Illinois were opened to rese

Oil price puts solar in spotlight
Socratoad
by Socratoad  7-19-2008    1
It is amazing that the enormous power plant in the sky, the sun, has remained mostly untapped despite serious concerns about our energy security, health, and economy. Today, only a fraction of a percent of the world's electricity generation comes from solar energy. The good news is that the promise of solar energy, particularly solar thermal, is extraordinary as it can be used to generate electricity in large quantities.
