Running Doc: Pre- and post-race tips for newbies
Lexica
by Lexica  11-3-2009
More: The day of your race, eat the same as you do on long training runs/walks…my favorite pre-race meal in training: the “Elvis Bagel” (peanut butter and banana on a bagel)… After the event, within 2 hours of finishing, have a recovery drink with protein in it. There are commercial products but chocolate milk works as good as all these scientific mixes… “Marathon feet” are common to get in the middle of the night post race…This again is due to inflammation of the soft tissue structures and easily preventable. When you get back to your home or hotel room, a simple immersion in an ice bath for 15 minutes will prevent this happening to you!… Do not get a post event massage until a minimum of 2 hours after finishing the race…Do not try any new stretches or have someone stretch you out again until 72 hours have passed… Give yourself two or three days of rest before starting your training again. Try a nice swim in these days, but allow yourself some recovery time.

Every time the little bear cub moved, I heard her cry with pain
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-23-2009    2
Trembling at the prospect of each blow from the stick, each rough pull of the rope, she is forced to wander the dusty roads, standing and swaying on her hind legs on command. She tires easily from her poor diet, pants with thirst in the oppressive heat, shakes with fear and exhaustion. Yet this bear cub dare not stop dancing, and she must do so again and again. This story is typical of the plight of many bear cubs in India. Sadder still, over 50% of these beautiful little creatures do not even survive the journey to 'market'. They simply die in cages en route, from starvation, dehydration and trauma. That's why these bears desperately need your support. WSPA is working with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to stop this barbaric practice. Our aim is to halt it at the source, and your help is vital in helping us stop this cruelty.

Ig Nobel prize: Fertile strippers make more money; Coke kills sperm
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  10-9-2009    2
What some people consider to be serious research. Sigh. Some lap dancers have scheduled shifts based on this research. About the Coke thing, the professor of obstetrics and gynecology does not recommend using Coke for birth control or to cure babies of colic, toughen your pooches paw pads, dissolve the rust off your car’s bumper or quench your thirst. It does make good Mentos rockets, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKoB0MHVBvM

Here's One You've Probably Never Heard . . . As Stubborn As An Army Camel
merrie
by merrie  9-13-2009    2
Though they required tremendous amounts of water when they drank, they could go days without drinking, hence they could cross the vast distances between water supplies in the desert without dying of thirst. As beasts of burden, they could carry far more than the 300 lbs that was considered a 'mule load.' They were simply ideal for the purpose-making regular routes across the desert Southwest an actuality rather than a remote possibility. Jefferson Davis realized this in 1855 and sent a delegation from the US Army to the Middle East to observe and report on the feasibility of using camels in the American deserts. The officers reported seeing camels being used in every environment from the Sahara to the Alps, carrying loads that would crush even the biggest mules, and making trips between waterholes in deserts that would leave horses and mules dead of thirst. Camels were ideally suited, they reported, for the American Southwest. . .

Robert Novak, Giant of Journalism RIP
merrie
by merrie  8-18-2009    1
Kenneth Tomlinson at Human Events, which ran the Evans-Novak Report until it was ended last year, confirms that the conservative reporter Robert Novak has died after a year-long battle with cancer. Tim Carney, Novak’s last collaborator on the report, has a remembrance up. Novak would often tell aspiring journalists to pick a different field if their goal was to change the world. But, by simply aiming to inform and to do his job as well he could, Novak changed the lives of his readers and those of us blessed to work with him. Update: Lynn Sweet confirms it: “He was someone who loved being a journalist, love journalism and loved his country and loved his family,” Novak’s wife, Geraldine, told the Sun-Times on Tuesday.
