John Bolton Expects Israel To Take Iranian Matters Into It’s Own Hands
merrie
by merrie  7-30-2009    3
He vaguely promises to offer the country the carrot of diplomacy"followed by an empty threat of sanctions down the road if Iran does not comply with the U.S.’s requests. This is precisely the European Union’s approach, which has failed for over six years. There’s no reason Iran would suddenly now bow to Mr. Obama’s diplomatic efforts, especially after its embarrassing election in June. Under the worst-case scenario, Iran will continue improving its nuclear facilities and Mr. Obama will become the first U.S. president to tie the issue of Israel’s nuclear capabilities into negotiations about Iran’s. Israel understands that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent commitment to extend the U.S. “defense umbrella” to Israel is not a guarantee of nuclear retaliation, and that it is wholly insufficient to deter Iran from obliterating Israel if it so decides. In fact, Mrs. Clinton’s comment tacitly concedes that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons, exactly the wrong message.

The Media's "Wes Clark Hyperventorama"
cptenaud
by cptenaud  7-2-2008    3
Gen. Clark was absolutely right in his praise and valid criticism of Sen. McCain. Bob Schieffer has an opportunity here to show himself to be a responsible journalist by putting the comments back in their proper context, i.e. when he makes his closing comments on Face the Nation. But I'm not holding my breath on that one! Brandon, can you get the vets in your "Veterans Respond to General Clark's Comments" on video? YouTube would be a great vehicle for this. Thanks for the posts. for the last four years, so I am not acclimatized to the US media anymore. WTF happened to my country????? No one has bothered to look at McCains voting record on vet issues for the last twenty years. He's voted no on practically every piece of legislation benefiting the VA. If he used his "military/vet/pow" creds to boost the VA, then I and many of my younger brothers and sisters from Iraq and Afghanistan would probably not have the serious problems they have getting their benefits.

To save America, we need another 9/11
dorine
by dorine  8-10-2007    19
cont'd: In contrast, Britain just pulled its soldiers out of Northern Ireland where they had been, often being shot at, almost 40 years. That's not the American way. In Iraq, we don't believe our military is being beaten on the battleground. It's more that there is no formal "battleground." There is the drip of daily casualties and victory is not around the corner. Americans are impatient. We like fast food and fast war. Americans loved the 1991 Gulf War. It raged for just 100 hours when George H.W. Bush ended it with a declaration of victory. He sent a half-million troops into harm's way and we suffered fewer than 300 deaths. America likes wars shorter than the World Series. Bush I did everything right, Bush II did everything wrong - but he did it with the backing of Congress. Because the war has been a botch so far, Democrats and Republicans are attacking one another, when they aren't attacking themselves. The dialog of discord echoes across America.
