POPSTexting instead of sleeping
This is so disturbing. Social media has such wonderful potential, but seeing it used like this is depressing. Call me crazy but i would strongly consider advocating legislation that caps the number of text messages, tweets, status updates, etc. that a minor is allowed to send. God knows how many of them text while driving, putting us all at great risk. Between twitter and text messaging, society's use of social tools to stay connected 24x7 all day, every day just makes no sense to me. Seeing tweets about what people are doing, who they're with, where they're going, what they're eating, what they're watching just makes no sense to me. Who cares! Is there no joy in doing something anymore unless we can instantly tweet about it, upload a photo of it or broadcast it to our 'friends' on facebook? I think there is so much to gain from social media...so much to learn. But right now i feel like people are drunk on the idea and using it extreme ways that will look foolish in hinds

POPSIs the Internet melting our brains? I start with Plato's critique of writing where he says that if we depend on writing, we will lose the ability to remember things. Our memory will become weak. And he also criticizes writing because the written text is not interactive in the way spoken communication is. He also says that written words are essentially shadows of the things they represent. They're not the thing itself. Of course we remember all this because Plato wrote it down -- the ultimate irony. We hear a thousand objections of this sort throughout history: Thoreau objecting to the telegraph, because even though it speeds things up, people won't have anything to say to one another. Then we have Samuel Morse, who invents the telegraph, objecting to the telephone because nothing important is ever going to be done over the telephone because there's no way to preserve or record a phone conversation.

POPSLong distance love One of the hardest relationships to keep is one that involves great distances. Occasional absence from each other does make the heart grow fonder but a prolonged one can make a heart stray. It takes a special kind of commitment in order to keep a long distance love.

POPSProgress But comfort yourselves. Children may not know how to handle cutlery, but if UNESCO has its way they will soon be instructed, from the age of five, in the joys of masturbation.

POPSHow Facebook Ruins Friendships
Like many people, I'm experiencing Facebook Fatigue. I'm tired of loved ones"you know who you are"who claim they are too busy to pick up the phone, or even write a decent email, yet spend hours on social-media sites, uploading photos of their children or parties, forwarding inane quizzes, posting quirky, sometimes nonsensical one-liners or tweeting their latest whereabouts. ("Anyone know a good restaurant in Berlin?") One of the big problems is how we converse. Typing still leaves something to be desired as a communication tool; it lacks the nuances that can be expressed by body language and voice inflection. "Online, people can't see the yawn," says Patricia Wallace, a psychologist at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth and author of "The Psychology of the Internet." But let's face it, the problem is much greater than which tools we use to communicate. It's what we are actually saying that's really mucking up our relationships. "Oh my God, a college friend . . .

POPSThere is Iraq, Darfur, and Afghanistan and Then There is The Congo! The genocide of Rwanda-Burundi ended there and moved next door into the Congo where there has been ongoing wars and rebellion over its riches since the 1960's - yes, the 1960s. As per usual, it is about money and the power that lets the money flow into the hands of North American and European companies. The latest real driver of child soldiers, rape as war policy, thousands being killed weekly? Uranium and chromium are still important but the rare earths and minerals that have been powering cell phone were the latest and greatest. So who has been paying for the deaths and rapes in the Congo? You and me, texting, web surfing and twittering on our phones keeps the wars going!
