POPSIf you cannot speak Texan, gee outta town! Texas is not the only place with people in power embarrassing the town but this is pretty good - fining people for something that's not a crime. It says as much about those who trained and managed them and the courts in their jurisdictions as it does about the officers with misplaced sense of being word police. Question is what would happen if one of these officers got stopped in London - England, not Ohio; could they be cited for refusing to speak the Queen's English?

POPSExposing the Colour of Prejudice John Howard Griffin was a remarkable man. As a Texan teenager who found himself in France at the outbreak of World War II, he helped to smuggle Jewish children to safety and freedom. He then served with distinction in the US Air Force in the Pacific. And then, after the war - when illness struck him blind for 10 years while he was still relatively young - he became a prolific writer. It was after his sight returned that he hit upon the idea of Black Like Me, the work which is his most important legacy. The whole business of racial impersonation might make us feel vaguely uncomfortable now, but in 1959 a black writer simply could not have found an audience for such a graphic portrayal of African-American grievance. Griffin's grim adventures as a black man in a white man's world are worth reading. They remain a set text for many American high school children.

POPSTexan Justice
Some of this is now coming back to haunt Rick Perry. He executed 199 people, more than any governor in American history. He gave consistent short shrift to clemency appeals. Many of those appealing were likely guilty, but it is now clear that one was innocent and that this fact was flagged for Perry before he ordered him put to death. Cameron Todd Willingham was executed by lethal injection in 2004 on charges that he killed his minor children. The charges arose from a fire that occurred in his home on December 23, 1991. Investigators concluded that the fire resulted from arson. However, subsequent scientific reviews have all found that the arson investigation was grossly flawed and that its conclusions reflected base prejudices rather than science. The prosecutor, John Jackson, acknowledges that the arson investigation was flawed, but he remains convinced that Willingham is guilty for two reasons. The first is that he beat his wife and was therefore capable of killing his children. The

POPSCould Texas’ Gingrish-based High School History Curriculum Go National? Okay parents, you want to worry about a politician brainwashing your kid? This is where we need to fight back. Why should the rest of the country worry about what textbooks are use din Texas? Because Texas is one of the two states with the largest student enrollments, along with California. "The publishers vie to get their books adopted for them, and the changes that are inserted to please Texas and California are then part of the textbooks made available to every other state," says Diane Ravitch, professor of education at NYU, who wrote a book about the politics of textbooks.

POPSBoston PD Officer Barrett G-O-N-E, Says Mayor Thomas Menino But city lawyers cited Menino’s former Gotham counterpart, ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who triumphed in court when a cop sued after he was fired for racist behavior. According to reports at the time, Joseph Locurto donned blackface and joined others on the float who hurled watermelon slices at the crowd and re-enacted the brutal murder of James Byrd Jr., a black man dragged to death by white men months earlier. Separately, city lawyers said Barrett’s disciplinary hearing would not be held this week, according to court documents. Barrett’s attorney had raised concerns the cop, who is on paid administrative leave, would be fired for filing the lawsuit.

POPSTrue Blood Season 2 Spoilers True Blood Season 2 spoiler and cast news reporting out from SpoilerTV today and as mentioned yesterday take the information with a grain of salt. The first spoiler report states that Sookie finds another young Texan named Barry who can read minds just like her and they both get freaked out when they find out each other’s powers. Now since you are already reading a spoiler you are warned regarding what I am about to say next: Barry is in the book and yes he has telepathic abilities. So there is a high probability that this spoiler is true but I will not say 100% because Alan Ball has the creative rights to the show and he can throw whatever twists and turns he wants into the show. Another spoiler report is based upon the casting calls for two young Vikings who are from the 10 century AD. The spoiler states that Eric fans may see in season 2 how he was first turned into a vampire...

POPSEliminationism on parade: Coulter, Joe the Plumber, and military chaplains' leader wish for deaths As noted in the Newsweek story, last fall - as the presidential election was heating up, retired Colonel E.H. "Jim" Ammerman, in the official September 2008 newsletter of his Department of Defense approved chaplain endorsing agency, published a letter which suggested, per the advice of a fabricated Abraham Lincoln quote, that four US Senators should be be "arrested, quickly tried and hanged!!!"... The alleged crime ? - voting against a Senate bill that would have established English as the official language of the United States. Newsweek did not reveal the names of the four senators. But a May 20, 2009 Huffington Post story by Military Religious Freedom Foundation Senior Researcher Chris Rodda does: Democratic Party senators Dodd, Biden, Clinton, and Obama.

POPSWe need to work together As a woman, a conservative, a mother, a Christian, a Texan, a southerner, an American and a bacon-lover: I am categorized and vilified quite often. These qualities alone or in connection with each other put me in groups that are considered stupid, hate-filled, racist, bigoted, naive, unqualified, greedy, blind, selfish, willfully ignorant, phobic, slutty, earth-hating, anti-feminist, weak and worthless. I am not alone. Anyone here at CM can identify with at least one group that is equally vilified. We are a varied people, humans. If we keep painting with such a broad brush, the finer lines get lost. The incidences of actual hate and actual evil blend seamlessly among the imagined incidences. It's a wonder anyone can see clearly. Let's build each other up for a while.

POPSWhat Mainland Americans do not know
Is that Puertorricans do no fall into a "race"; we re not a race as much as Texan or New Yorker is not. Puertorricans is a nationality; we are white, black and Indian; we are of every color and many shades in between and variety of upbringings and we don't follow any inclinations for racism. There is less racism in Puerto Rico that in any non racist state of the mainland. I feel more threatened than blacks in the mainland USA because of this misconception of racism and expectations based on color and appearance I am taken for an immigrant. I am most of the times believed to be illiterate than having the science education that I have, and vastly more than most. I speak and write two languages and have traveled abroad, unlike the prior president. This obsession of Americans of fitting people into races and making census about the partitions of society based on that is the racist approach for containment. Sotomayor, I am sure, because of her upbringing, is a conservative

POPSNo way I don't know how many rulings have been had that are against the taste of the people in the USA. So many white conservatists are opposed because of they fear ceasing to be in control. Fear of other "races" been in positions of a power too long held in their hands. As many other views of the world are invited to a dialogue better and different solutions are found. An yes, past experiencei s part of wisdom. Dah! It is strange how today they referred to her as "Puertorrican American" in the same breadth as Colombian American. The difference is Puertorricans are born Americans, the others are made by requesting it. We feel as Americans we are raised as Americans. It is like saying Texan Americans. Cannot let it pass again. Puerto Rico has no vote in any regulations and laws that affect the island. It is about time we had some presence. This is s fairness in action.Within the rule of law and with the constrains of reason and logic Sotomayor, if deemed qualified, must be appoi
