POPSJust Missed: Nov. 7th Asteroid 30x Closer Than Moon It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid. But before you turn to another Clipmark note: THIS WAS THE SECOND ONE THIS YEAR. The one in March 2009 was close too. Look at the stats on that one 8 months ago: Asteroid's Near Miss A Cosmic Close Call Heavenly Body Buzzes Earth; Comes Within 48,800 Miles The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon. CNN video report on that one here. Real footage Video of 1972 asteroid in Canada here --which actually is seen trailing then "bouncing" off earth's atmosphere.

POPSWorld's Most Boring Man Takes Up Post As Human Anaesthetic Lipstick, who is also an unreliable witness at Employment Tribunals, was asked by staff at the infirmary if he would like to work there in a trial they were running, when it became apparent that he could put anything to sleep just by talking. Being the sort of person who loves and craves attention, Lipstick agreed, and off he went to bore folks into their pre-op slumbers. A former 'friend' and colleague of Lipstick's, Harry Geath, told reporters: "He's an extremely boring, irritating twat. Mind you, so am I" Reminds me of teachers and lecturers

POPSTwitter users get phone calls directly to each other through Jajah! Twitter users on Thursday will, for the first time, be able to make voice calls directly to each other through the microblogging service. Jajah A new third-party offering from Jajah known as Jajah@call is expected to go into beta Thursday morning that will allow Twitter users to initiate a two-way voice chat with other users by typing "@call @username"--where "username" is someone's Twitter ID--into any Twitter client. During the beta period, the company said, the calls will be limited to two minutes, but the company will evaluate that length during beta. However, it sees the two minute period--after which the call will end--as "the verbal equivalent of a tweet".

POPSCyber-Security Bill Permits President to "Seize Temporary Control of Private Sector Networks During A So-Called... Emergency The bill would allow the president to unilaterally declare "a cybersecurity emergency" for non-governmental computer networks in order to respond to a threat. Other sections of the bill go even further: they proscribe government-controlled certification programs that license computer security professionals. And it goes on to demand that certain, privately-owned computer systems and networks be managed only by those professionals who have achieved the federal certification. In all seriousness: if you were elected President and wanted to transform the U.S. into a third-world banana republic like Venezuela, how would your policies differ from those of Obama?

POPSBill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet
The White House is supposed to engage in "periodic mapping" of private networks deemed to be critical, and those companies "shall share" requested information with the federal government. ("Cyber" is defined as anything having to do with the Internet, telecommunications, computers, or computer networks.) "The language has changed but it doesn't contain any real additional limits," EFF's (Electronic Frontier Foundation) Tien says. "It simply switches the more direct and obvious language they had originally to the more ambiguous (version)...The designation of what is a critical infrastructure system or network as far as I can tell has no specific process. There's no provision for any administrative process or review. That's where the problems seem to start. And then you have the amorphous powers that go along with it." Translation: If your company is deemed "critical," a new set of regulations kick in involving who you can hire, what information you must disclose, . . .

POPSAnother Power Grab? "Clinton, of the Internet Security Alliance, praised President Obama's May science policy review, which he said would take cybersecurity in the right direction by promoting incentives to get the private industry to improve its own security measures. But he faulted the Senate bill, which he said would centralize regulations for an industry that is too varied to fall under the control of a single set of rules without endangering the economy and security. "We think a lot of things need to be done to enhance cybersecurity," he told FOXNews.com, but this bill is "not something that we could support." " Here's my simple thought: At what point do we say 'stop'? At what point is the government taking things a step too far? When will Americans wake up?
