POPSThe Federal Student-Loan Takeover Gets Booed in Academia
But before the bill has even come to the Senate floor, federal officials have been making unsolicited contacts to schools urging them to accept this "public option." In October, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan sent a letter to schools nationwide offering to help them "in taking the necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted access to federal student loans by ensuring your institution is Direct Loan-ready for the 2010-2011 academic year." Schools got the message. The leader of a large university recently refused to discuss the issue with us on the record, fearful that the feds are taking names. Rep. John Kline (R., Minn.) has asked the Department of Education's inspector general to investigate efforts by officials to encourage outside groups to advocate for the ban on private lenders. He wants to know if department staff violated a federal law against lobbying with appropriated funds, among other possible offenses. WSJournal http://bit.ly/6P78Lb

POPSCronyism in My Hometown A must read letter by the president of a local Dodge dealer. In the past year, we have embarked on several creative initiatives in order to remain profitable and out of bankruptcy court. Though Dodge district sales are down by about 50%, our new vehicle sales actually increased comparing April 2008 and April 2009. Though I am a Washington, DC-educated attorney and former employee of the US Department of Labor and the US Senate and an active advocate of the American way of life, it is difficult for me to view this abrogation of our franchise rights as anything more than a manipulation of US bankruptcy court and law so that Chrysler LLC can transfer wealth between dealers they like and those they dislike, those that have agreed to under-table favors and those that haven't, and to settle old vendettas. This is not the purpose of US bankruptcy protection and, surely, it isn't why the US Treasury has given billions to Chrysler to keep them in business.

POPSBail-out Union Advocate Tells America We need to pay for their Health Care Costs Listen closely as Jonathan Tasini, Executive director of Labor research Association tells America where Obama's stimulus money was earmarked. JONATHAN TASINI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR LABOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATION: If I can first address the main point: thank God for the public sector unions. Because if it wasn't for the public sector unions, and the stimulus money coming to states to save jobs, this economy would not just be in a so-called recession, we'd be at the bottom of the abyss. It's actually the stimulus money that has saved part of the economy and kept that sector going while in fact the private sector has declined because there's no credit as you well know in the private sector, and jobs have been lost like crazy. Did you hear that? What he said was we the people (taxpayer) are paying PUBLIC employees TO KEEP THEIR JOBS while we the people (taxpayer) are loosing ours. Sound about right does it?

POPSFederal Idiocy Strikes Again The IRS is firing their privatized collectors. Makes you think the program wasn't successful. Yet it was. And we think people that make decisions like this with OUR money can fix health care, energy or anything else? Name ONE program the feds operate within a budget that makes sense that produces extraordinary results. Just one. And, I'll have faith in "change". I doubt you can.

POPSThe master plan I can't deal with this country anymore. Norquist said one in six state lawmakers across the country has signed his Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Members of Congress, governors and attorneys general also have signed it. "I'm not voting for the budget because I signed a tax pledge; I'm not voting for the bill because raising taxes will devastate our economy for all Californians," said state Sen. Tony Strickland of Thousand Oaks, one of those who kept their word. Devastate what? You mean you're going to do everything to make sure the people don't raise taxes on the rich so they can ride out the financial crisis in style? Go devastate your face.

POPSTaxpayer advocate takes aim at IRS deficiencies Tax reform ought to be the highest priority in this country after universal health care. This report ought to make it very clear our tax system is in need of scrapping and rebuilding the system from scratch. There must be a better way for government to fund itself in a fair and progressive manner which does not place undue burdens upon individuals, businesses and non profit entities, churches and schools.

POPS The Politics Of Freedom: David Boaz (continued) heading early Wednesday for a new round of speeches, rallies and town meetings in West Virginia, which holds its primary on May 13," The New York Times reports. "Highlighting the financial woes of her campaign, Mrs. Clinton has lent her campaign more than $6 million over the last month, according to campaign officials." "Republicans have been trying to drive libertarian voters out of their party. But so far Democrats aren't jumping on that opportunity."

POPSIf you still believe drugs should be illegal, If you still believe drugs should be illegal, answer this question... Why do you believe it is good policy to punish me--and 20 million adult Americans like me--because I choose to use marijuana in the privacy of my own home? Who benefits from this policy and how do they benefit? * Over 300,000 nonviolent people lose their freedom to prison/jail. * Thousands of murders, assaults, and robberies caused by drug crimes. * $20 billion/year in law enforcement costs. * $10 billion/year in lost tax revenue (similar to alcohol tax). * $5 billion/year in property losses due to drug-related crimes. * $50 billion/year and 500,000 jobs lost because of no hemp industry. Total cost = $85 billion/year = $500 per taxpayer every year!
