Whoever Wins, Iraqis Lose

Hamid referred to the fact that Obama appeared at the speech with a lapel pin comprised of both the U.S. and Israeli flags. In his speech, Obama’s call for a unified Jerusalem omitted Palestinians’ demands for their share of Jerusalem, which is a sacred city for them too. Like most U.S. citizens, most Iraqis are not familiar with U.S. foreign policy. While Obama, the Democratic presidential hopeful, calls for a shift in the U.S. policy in Iraq, neither he nor his Republican rival, John McCain, talk about changing the National Security Strategy of the U.S., or the military document Joint Vision 2020, which calls for “full spectrum dominance” of the world by the U.S. military by the year 2020. ‘Full spectrum dominance’ means not just total control of land, air, and sea, but also of information and of space. “The U.S. strategy is firm and unchanging,” a political analyst at Diyala University told IPS on condition of anonymity, given widespread fear of U.S. forces. “It makes no di

Dyson, Freeman John

There's an aspect of things which I find amusing: the flow back and forth between science and science fiction, which has been an important part of my life. I started out reading science fiction and then became a scientist, and that set the slant on my scientific work. I like to make connections between life and cosmology and astronomy. Science fiction raises all these interesting possibilities and has had some influence on science in the last 25 years – not only in the area of SETI, but also in other ways. 1. Dyson, F. J. "Interstellar Transport," Physics Today, 21, 41 (1968). 2. Dyson, F. J. "Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infrared Radiation." Science 131 (June 3, 1960). 3. Swift, David. Do You Really Believe That? Noah's Flood Edition
laceym
by laceym  5-15-2007    3
If continual and arbitrary violations of physical law are invoked at every turn, any chain of events, no matter how ridiculous or impossible, can be allowed. But the sheer number of miracles that would be needed gives some idea of just how implausible the flood story is. Nevertheless, there are a significant number of theists who believe this silly story really happened and want to see it adopted into the scientific canon and taught in public schools as fact. Yet most of these people, I'd wager, want this only because they have been told by their trusted religious authorities that this story is true and have never thought through its implications for themselves. To theists who fit this description, I suggest you take a closer look at the story of Noah's flood and all it entails, and then ask yourselves: Do you really believe that?

What Drew Us To Anna Nicole
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  2-9-2007
The compelling mix of beauty and vulnerability is just one quality that has led to comparisons with Marilyn Monroe, another sexy, tragic blonde who Smith liked to compare herself to. The comparison is tempting, but the difference is monumental..."Marilyn Monroe was an artis, a real performer, able to evoke in audiences a real empathy and passion," said Richard Walter, a film professor at UCLA. "There is NO comparison." And yet he sees one strong point in common: the simple beginnings, the climb from total obscurity to fame.

Iraq another Vietnam?
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  1-19-2007    6
Looks like some politicals just never learn. Repeating the same mistakes of the Vietnam era will once again result in less than a regal outcome in Iraq. Taking the political handcuffs off our military men and women and let them do what they do best will result in a WIN. Once the enemy is defeated and law and order is restored then we can talk about who is in charge until then. CHARGE!!

Archeon Tarot - Timothy Lantz
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  10-16-2006    1
Begun in the late stages of October 2003, this project is my first attempt at creating a tarot deck, but it is also something of a personal journey. Each of the 78 images in the Archeon Tarot relies heavily on the symbolism inherent in my mind. What this means is that it is a curious mixture of traditional and non-traditional imagery from varied sources thrown into the blender of my subconscious. There will be things that you recognize, cultural and social conventions, but their interpretations may not always be what you'd expect.

Index of Answers to Creationist Claims (Talk.Origins)
Kore7
by Kore7  9-10-2006    5
It's futile to spend too much time answering the creationist/ID claims that pop up here from time to time when all of them have already been addressed and debunked by the scientific community in overwhelming detail. This continually updated index addresses every single creationist/ID claim that has been made to date with short responses and hyperlinks to papers and references with detailed responses. (Most claims go back decades, if not centuries...there is very little new in the way of creationist claims any more. ID so far has made no new claims that creationists hadn't already made in the 60s/70s with different terminology.) While this a handy resource for debates on origins, its primary worth is as a doorway to education in the entire field of modern science and the scientific process, with a focus on the historical fields of evolution, anthropology, biology, and geology...with a healthy dose of religion and philosophy of science thrown in as well.

Evidence for the Big Bang (Talk.Origins FAQ)
Kore7
by Kore7  8-15-2006    2
This could not be a better overview of the Big Bang model of the beginning moments of the universe. This is not an easy subject, so it is not surprising that it is so misunderstood. I particularly recommend Common misconceptions about the Big Bang and What does the theory really say? to get a grasp on the theory. Then glance at the converging lines of observational evidence to see why no other theory fits the data as well. I think this is fun stuff.

"death, life, and libeskind"
acrv56
by acrv56  2-12-2006
Saturday, February 04, 2006 Death, Life and Libeskind An essay by Brian Hanson and Nikos Salingaros. The architecture of Daniel Libeskind follows two distinct threads--the geometry employed in his Holocaust Memorials, and the geometry of those buildings whose purpose is life and regeneration. But is there a difference between the two types? And if not, does Libeskind's architecture make sense for the former site of the World Trade Center? posted by True Urbanism @ 10:44 AM
