POPS ChotuKool: the $69 fridge for rural India To achieve its efficiency the ChotuKool doesn't use a compressor, instead running on a cooling chip and a fan similar to those used in computers, so like computers it can run on batteries. It's engineering credentials are further boosted by the fact that it has only 20 parts, as opposed to more than 200 parts in a normal refrigerator. The ChotuKool was co-designed with village women to assure its acceptability, and is distributed by members of a micro-finance group.

POPSUk Anti-Rape Campaign As much as I hate to think about rape and the holiday season at the same time, I remind myself that for women, it's always the season for rape. More from the article below: "This is all great and exciting, but when I read some news coverage of the campaign it seems that the campaign's focus on the victims is misguided. Take, for example, this article from Reuters that says "Ultimately we want to prevent rape from occurring in the first pace, by arming potential victims with key advice on how to keep themselves safe." It' s great that the campaign aims to help women protect themselves (many anti-rape campaigns focus on this angle), but to me this seems like a backwards approach. Men are the principle perpetrators of rape so why not have a campaign directed at them which aims to arms them with the tools to change their attitudes toward sex and power. If men stopped raping women, women wouldn't need advice on keeping themselves safe."

POPSTo whom it may concern: I resign More: I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colours, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know what you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried or upset. I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow. So.... here's my cheque book and my car keys, my company badge, my credit card bills, and all 32 of my computer passwords. I am officially resigning from adulthood. And if you want to discuss this further, you'll have to catch me first, cause, TAG!! YOU'RE IT!!

POPSPages, Costs, and Agencies Added To The Obama/Pelosi Health Care Behemoth
“Additionally, this bill cuts critical Medicare and Medicaid funding by $628 billion, accounts for nearly $1.2 trillion in tax and fee increases and will explode the scope of government by putting the nation’s health care system in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. The $3 trillion price tag defies common sense " we simply cannot add all this new spending to the government rolls and claim to control the deficit. “If we continue to pile more and more debt on the next generation, they will never be able to get out from under it. The health care system needs reform, but this massive expansion of government, financed by our children and grandchildren, is the wrong way to proceed.” And listen…this is what our government believes will be the cost. But look at programs our government has run historically and you find decades of added costs and overruns that our forced onto the taxpayer. POPSCBO deals new blow to health plan On his White House blog, Orszag – who served as CBO director in 2007 and 2008 – downplayed the office's small probable savings number in favor of the proposal's more speculative long-term benefits. "The point of the proposal, however, was never to generate savings over the next decade. ... Instead, the goal is to provide a mechanism for improving quality of care for beneficiaries and reducing costs over the long term," Orszag wrote. "In other words, in the terminology of our belt-and-suspenders approach to a fiscally responsible health reform, the IMAC is a game changer not a scoreable offset." But scoreable offsets are the immediate savings that fiscally conservative Blue Dogs and other Democratic moderates have been pushing for precisely because they will help offset the bill's cost. POPSCBO Pronounces ObaCare DOA But on Saturday, the Congressional Budget Office said the proposal to give an independent panel the power to keep Medicare spending in check would only save about $2 billion over 10 years- a drop in the bucket compared to the bill's $1 trillion price tag. July 25, 2009 CBO Deals New Blow to Health Plan For the second time this month, congressional budget analysts have dealt a blow to the Democrat's health reform efforts, this time by saying a plan touted by the White House as crucial to paying for the bill would actually save almost no money over 10 years. POPS"Space Internet" to Link Worlds by 2011? DTN is already used for earthbound projects. Scientists, for instance, are using the system to tag and track wildlife with a data-delivery capacity far more reliable than past satellite-based networks. DTN can also bring broadband Web to remote areas with few communication structures, connecting remote humans such as the Arctic's Sami people via satellite with far shorter time lags. The U.S. military has also embraced the technology to help keep lines of communication open in remote areas—or when other infrastructure is destroyed. So far, DTN doesn't seem to have a catch, experts say.

POPSNASA's mission: Can we live on the moon? The poles have areas of perpetual sunlight and perpetual shade. The sunlight would be useful as a source of solar power for colonists. The shaded areas may feature deposits of ice that have been locked up for billions of years. Such ice could be used not just as a source of water. Through electrolysis, it could be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen could be used both for respiration and to make rocket fuel for trips back and forth to Earth. But there's no definitive proof ice is there. The possible presence of water on the moon "is a hotly and passionately debated topic," Tooley said.

POPSLobstermen, scientists team up t will take years for data to reveal meaningful trends on complex issues such as climate change, Manning said. The temperature readings could also help gauge the intensity of regular toxic "red tide" algae blooms, which grow faster in certain temperatures and can devastate the shellfishing industry.

POPSOn the Anniversary of Rod v. Wade 36 years ago today women’s rights took a huge step forward. Taking control of their own body was legally recognized. Being a man I cannot possibly know the inner struggle that takes place when faced with the question of interfering with such a basic biological function as giving birth. I believe every woman should have final power over her own body, but that decision requires a wisdom that, unfortunately, not every woman possesses. Nor man for that matter. Social and medical complications aside, to interrupt the development of a new life in favor of convenience seems the ultimate in selfishness. To claim that one life is worth more than another and to spend the rest of your life second-guessing your decision takes an immeasurable amount of inner strength that, I can only imagine, comes with a very high price tag. Some agree with it, some don’t. That is the price of living in a true democracy.
