This Day in History-July 21 'Infamous Monkey Trial'
righthand
by righthand  7-21-2008    3
"To show up fundamentalism,""to prevent bigots and ignoramuses from controlling the educational system of the United States." said Darrow. So what has changed after 80 years of intellectual backwardness?! Would this case be out of place in Bush's America - in the land of the 'free and home of the brave', mired in debt and death of its own making? Where now is the shinning beacon of liberty? What country has made 'democracy' a dirty word. What county elects an AWOL drunk as commander-in-chief, TWICE? Where is the KKK a white sheet away from power and the noose? What country is still loved even by it pseudo enemies?

The "justice" of theocracy: How the victim becomes the "accused" one
invictus

Saudi King, "pardoned" the woman who was raped by seven men. Huh? I beg your pardon? Who's "pardoning" whom? How come the victim becomes the one to be pardoned? A good example of the "justice" in theocratic states (of which, Saudi Arabia is among the worst.)

This article really does a good job to put things in perspective. As a white person who doesn't like or listen to Imus, him getting fired for his poor comments seems to be taking the direction of the situation to a very hypocritical level. Read the entire article, as it's probably the deepest and most well thought out one I've read about this topic.

Watching Whales Watching Us
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  8-1-2009
The question of sonar’s catastrophic effects on whales even reached the Supreme Court last November, in a case pitting the United States Navy against the Natural Resources Defense Council. The council, along with other environmental groups, had secured two landmark victories in the district and appellate courts of California, which ruled to heavily restrict the Navy’s use of sonar devices in its training exercises. The Supreme Court, however, in a 6-to-3 decision widely viewed as a setback for the environmental movement, overturned parts of the lower-court rulings, faulting them for, in the words of Chief Justice John Roberts’s majority opinion, failing “properly to defer to senior Navy officers’ specific, predictive judgments,” thereby jeopardizing the safety of the fleet and sacrificing the public’s interest in military preparedness by “forcing the Navy to deploy an inadequately trained antisubmarine force.” In his decision, Roberts went on to minimize, in a fairly

Which would you rather have on the Court - Sotomayor's assertion that latina women can empathize with some situations that white men might not (and, presumably, vice versa), or Newt's notion that women are ill equipped to be soldiers (while men are "biologically driven to to go out and hunt giraffes")? Really.

Why the f*** did I clip this? I like the word friggin' much better. .:) Anyway! I saw someone wearing a t-shirt that said "F*** the President" and wondered if it was legal? (With letters and not asterisks though.) The f-word does seem to be becoming more and more acceptable as common language nowadays. Do I like it? Naaa, I guess I must be friggin' old-fashioned, but I loved the t-shirt though. *LOL* In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the mere public display of fuck is protected under the First and Fourteenth Amendments and cannot be made a criminal offense.

The Howls Of A Fading Species
debbyski
by debbyski  6-2-2009    5
"Are we supposed to not notice that these are the tribunes of a party that rose to power on the filthy waves of racial demagoguery. I don’t remember hearing their voices or the voices of their intellectual heroes when the Republican Party, as part of its Southern strategy, aggressively courted the bigots who fled the Democratic Party because the Democrats had become insufficiently hostile to blacks. Where were the howls of outrage at this strategy that was articulated by Lee Atwater as follows: “By 1968, you can’t say ‘nigger’ — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff.” Never a peep did you hear. Where were the right-wing protests when Ronald Reagan went out of his way to kick off his general election campaign in 1980 with a salute to states’ rights in, of all places, Philadelphia, Miss., not far from the site where three young civil rights workers had been snatched and murdered by real-life, rabid, blood-thirsty racists?"
