Negros Occidental High School
philippinetrivia
by philippinetrivia  10-26-2009
In early 1902, leaders of the short-lived Republica de Negros led by former provincial governor Melecio Severino and former Minister of Justice Antonio Jayme, together with George W. Bettie -- the division superintendent of schools -- exerted efforts to open a public secondary school in Negros Occidental. Despite the indifference of provincial governor to the idea, the school -- originally named Instituto Rizal-- was established due to the influence of the American provincial treasurer over the provincial board.

Christian Angst
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  10-7-2009
Notable quotes: "As a Christian I would not have liked it if they had used verses from the Quran, and if I had known about it, I probably would not have approved of them doing so," Ransom said. "The issue for us is about freedom of expression of Christianity." "But if the girls had decided to use something from the Quran, I feel in our community they would've received negative feedback." It seems pretty clear what is bothering these people. The writer of the article goes on: "Therein lies the bigger question -- is it freedom of religion for the protestors in Fort Oglethorpe or freedom of their religion? If it's just their religion, how is that constitutional?" He poses a good question. It's obvious that the citizens of N. Georgia are not worried about anyone but themselves and their particular religious sect. The N. Georgia hills are indeed beautiful. The people, not so much.

Notice the last paragraph? The one in which the people pointing out that a public school, as an agent for the government, has no business endorsing a religion, is the cause of their problem! These people simply don't get it.

The interim superintendent, Susan Wooden, says he was also well known at the High School where he would stand most mornings while students walked into school. No information is known about the man who was shot at the gravel pit at this time. Approximately 45 minutes after the shooting, police apprehended a suspect.

Texas school district turns away students from Mexico
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-11-2009
It had to happen sooner or later, I know it would be either Texas or Arizona. If Obama’s health care reform package claims it will not offer health care to non American citizen’s then that should be the policy for our public schools as well. While it is sad to see children not get a good education, I can’t help but side with the fact that U.S. citizens are paying for our public schools through our tax proceeds. It just simply is not right to provide an education to another country if that country is not going to pay for it.

MSNBC's Schuster Calls Critics Racists.
davboz
by davboz   9-4-2009    2
Now where will be the call for boycotts of advertisers? The calls of racism come fast and furious now, leveled at ANYONE who exposes this administration's radical, thuggish, sneaky agenda. It is the most disgusting trend and it seems to be clearing the bar as far as general acceptance goes. I don't think there can be mounted an intelligent, nuanced enough defense against this tactic. Nearly every argument the right tries to make misses the real mark - sometimes badly. To the point of ridiculously idiotic at times, leaving themselves wide open to counterattack by the left. Like the death panels. Good God! It isn't that they are going to LITERALLY, in this decade or generation, going to decide who lives and dies, by making that fundamental clear choice, one way or the other. If you are going to make that argument you have to describe the long-term subtlety, the slippery-slope, and use examples of what they put in place 50 yrs. ago has led to things today that would have sounded outlandis

We've Gotten Away With It For Years So It's OK
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  8-28-2009    3
I wonder how the superintendent would respond to a government organization that included on their letterhead the phrase "Uniontown - Only Christians Allowed", or "Uniontown - Jew Free"! It's mighty difficult for the privileged to see their own bigotry. Their defense? We've gotten away with it for years so it must be ok. What a bunch of wankers.

It's been suggested that the sign was put up by a teacher at a school up the road who was concerned about the safety of school children and decided to take action to reduce traffic down that street by preventing cars from turning down it fom the main road. Not sure if this has been confirmed yet.
