POPSThe Trappist, downtown Oakland The Trappist? Uh... you'd hate it. Yeah, that's it, you'd hate it. It's really small. It gets crowded. There's limited seating. People sit at the bar reading books. The beer list is confusingly long. The cheddar on the cheese plate is intimidatingly sharp. It's in the heart of downtown Oakland and we all know what a post-industrial hellhole Oakland is. You have to walk past all the pro-Oaksterdam sorts smoking on the sidewalk. Nobody goes there, and you don't want to either... Note: The beer lists are way, WAY too long to fit in the clip limit, so click through for those.

POPSAcme Bar sounding last call I think a part of our city died this week. The Acme was one of those places everyone has been to at some point in their life. Tell me it ain't so Mike, tell me it ain't so.

POPSRinging in Sunday booze sales When I ran my one campaign for public office in 2000, I ran on the Libertarian Party ticket for Indiana House District 100 on a platform of repealing the Sunday Blue Laws regulating the sale of alcohol and vehicles on Sunday. 8 years later a group has formed to lobby for this much needed change in our laws in Indiana.

POPSCatholic Parents' H.S. Graduation party busted If this had occured in Cape Girardeau county, where the Catholic H.S. is located, where there is a University, where probably close to 70% of the population is Catholic or Lutheran, nothing would have happened--they did have a permit for a loud party. It occurred in Scott County, Sikeston, which happens to be probably 85 or 90% Southern Baptist, Methodist, Evangelicals. Some neighbor took offense (some non-drinking neighbor) and called it in.
