What a bunch of nut-cases! Some people will do anything for attention. Be naked; just don't startle other folks with your weird-dom. Have some of them looked in their mirrors? Enjoy the mosquitoes, the poison ivy, the blow flies, the stickers, the sunburn, the laughter....etc....

What Does SPF Mean? UVB And UVA?
fewstingscorpio
by fewstingscorpio  5-14-2009
If adequately applied, sunscreens with sky-high SPFs offer slightly better protection against lobster-red burns than an SPF 30. But they don’t necessarily offer stellar protection against the more deeply penetrating ultraviolet A radiation, or so-called aging rays. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/fashion/14SKIN.html?_r=1&em

If Your Sunscreen Contains Any of These Chemicals That I Consider Dangerous and Potentially Life Threatening, Do Yourself a BIG Favor... Dump it in the trash now . Yes, that's right. Toss your sunscreen in the trash if it contains any of these questionable chemicals: Sunscreen Toss your sunscreen in the trash if it contains any of these chemicals I consider to be potentially harmful. * Para amino benzoic acid... * Octyl salicyclate... * Avobenzone... * Oxybenzone... * Cinoxate... * Padimate O... * Dioxybenzone... * Phenylbenzimidazole... * Homosalate... * Sulisobenzone... * Menthyl anthranilate... * Trolamine salicyclate... * Octocrylene... And, oh yes, let me not forget... Potentially harmful chemicals such as dioxybenzone and oxybenzone (two chemicals I just mentioned) are some of the most powerful free radical generators known to man! So if your sunscreen contains dioxybenzone, oxybenzone, or any of

Understanding Vitamin D - the not-really-a-vitamin vitamin
Lexica
by Lexica  2-23-2009    1
More: There are 3 ways for adults to insure adequate levels of vitamin D: * regularly receive midday sun exposure in the late spring, summer, and early fall, exposing as much of the skin as possible. * regularly use a sun bed (avoiding sunburn) during the colder months. * take 5,000 IU per day for three months, then obtain a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. Adjust your dosage so that blood levels are between 50–80 ng/mL (or 125–200 nM/L) year-round. Is it just me, or is saying " cholecalciferol is pronounced cho·le·cal·ci·fer·ol " rather less than helpful? Dictionary.com says it's pronounced koh- luh -kal-SIF- uh -rawl .

Google Flu Trends ~ How does this work?
merrie
by merrie  11-12-2008
used by CDC. Of course, past performance is no guarantee of future results. Our system is still very experimental, so anything is possible, but we're hoping to see similar correlations in the coming year. The doctors keep track of the percentage of their patients who have an influenza-like illness, also known as an "ILI percentage". CDC and state health departments collect and aggregate this data each week, providing a good indicator of overall flu activity across the United States. So why bother with estimates from aggregated search queries? It turns out that traditional flu surveillance systems take 1-2 weeks to collect and release surveillance data, but Google search queries can be automatically counted very quickly. By making our flu estimates available each day, Google Flu Trends may provide an early-warning system for outbreaks of influenza. This is an exciting development, because early detection of a disease outbreak can reduce the number of people affected.

From tahini to the street, all about sesame :)
balthazarus
by balthazarus  11-2-2008    5
"Health Benefits : Sesame oil rubbed on the skin may soothe a minor burn or sunburn as well as help in the healing process. It's not unusual to encounter fantastic claims attributed to a single food. Sesame seed oil is said to remove wrinkles when applied to the skin in a facial massage. If this news gets out, there won't be a bottle left on the grocery shelves! Eat some sesame seeds to relieve constipation and to remove worms from the intestinal tract. They're an aid to digestion, stimulate blood circulation, and benefit the nervous system. Sesame oil makes ideal massage oil because of its excellent emollient properties. Applied topically, sesame oil is thought to aid in healing chronic diseases of the skin. With its vitamin E content, it's also a benefit to the heart and nervous system. " Interesting to know... :) and tasty!
