POPSWhat Does SPF Mean? UVB And UVA? If adequately applied, sunscreens with sky-high SPFs offer slightly better protection against lobster-red burns than an SPF 30. But they don’t necessarily offer stellar protection against the more deeply penetrating ultraviolet A radiation, or so-called aging rays. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/fashion/14SKIN.html?_r=1&em

POPSUnderstanding Vitamin D - the not-really-a-vitamin vitamin More: There are 3 ways for adults to insure adequate levels of vitamin D: * regularly receive midday sun exposure in the late spring, summer, and early fall, exposing as much of the skin as possible. * regularly use a sun bed (avoiding sunburn) during the colder months. * take 5,000 IU per day for three months, then obtain a 25-hydroxyvitamin D test. Adjust your dosage so that blood levels are between 50–80 ng/mL (or 125–200 nM/L) year-round. Is it just me, or is saying " cholecalciferol is pronounced cho·le·cal·ci·fer·ol " rather less than helpful? Dictionary.com says it's pronounced koh- luh -kal-SIF- uh -rawl .

POPSGoogle Flu Trends ~ How does this work?
used by CDC. Of course, past performance is no guarantee of future results. Our system is still very experimental, so anything is possible, but we're hoping to see similar correlations in the coming year. The doctors keep track of the percentage of their patients who have an influenza-like illness, also known as an "ILI percentage". CDC and state health departments collect and aggregate this data each week, providing a good indicator of overall flu activity across the United States. So why bother with estimates from aggregated search queries? It turns out that traditional flu surveillance systems take 1-2 weeks to collect and release surveillance data, but Google search queries can be automatically counted very quickly. By making our flu estimates available each day, Google Flu Trends may provide an early-warning system for outbreaks of influenza. This is an exciting development, because early detection of a disease outbreak can reduce the number of people affected.
