Uncle Sam’s Collections Continue Their Steep Drop
merrie
by merrie  11-6-2009    1
It is ironic to say the least that Congress and the Obama administration are glorifying the idea of a “public option” that would ultimately lead to government-run health care while Treasury receipts continue to shrink. If the private health insurance market disappears, so will its taxes. To name just one example, Aetna’s recorded income tax expense on its financial statements for 2005-2008 (including state and local taxes) averaged roughly $900 million per year. Put the company’s health insurance segment out of business, and a large portion of those taxes would stop coming in, digging the country’s and various states’ debt holes that much deeper. The establishment press has paid very little attention to fiscal 2009’s drop of 19.5% in receipts from economic activity, so I expect similar treatment of October’s continuation of the trend. It would appear that they don’t want any unsettling news getting in the way of the statist agenda.

What goes around comes around.... I guess Candidate Obama told Bush to use the Olympics' opening ceremony as a diplomatic pressure point against the Chinese. Wasn't it Bush that got Chicago on the short list to begin with? The Olympic committee isn't going to give President Obama a chance to take his own advice in 2016..

Obama, the Mortal
bferman
by bferman  9-6-2009
"The conventional wisdom is that Obama made a tactical mistake by farming out his agenda to Congress and allowing himself to be pulled left by the doctrinaire liberals of the Democratic congressional leadership. But the idea of Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi pulling Obama left is quite ridiculous. Where do you think he came from, this friend of Chávista ex-terrorist William Ayers, of PLO apologist Rashid Khalidi, of racialist inciter Jeremiah Wright?"

New facts and new troubles for Mexico
Roque Nuevo
by Roque Nuevo  9-2-2009    1
The estimated million plus Mexicans returning to Mexico plus the many more who choose to stay home, when earlier they would have gone to the other side, means more pressure on the nation's development. In this situation the country's GDP shrunk nine percent in the first quarter and a bit over ten percent in the second one. Whatever fiscal and economic reforms the government has planned are still being planned. The president insists on using his power to fight a useless losing drug war and effectively sabotaged the economy by locking the nation down for a month so that we wouldn't get the flu. The country cannot provide opportunities to vast swaths of the population. Now there is another swath to add to the others: returning illegal immigrants and others. Vast numbers of young unemployed kids whose skills are mainly in how to break the law and profit by it somehow are swelling the populace of Mexico's provincial backwaters (where most illegal immigrants come from) quite outside the a

It’s A Complex, Complex, Complex World
merrie

Along with the Predator strikes on compounds full of women and children, it should be good for a while. Knock on wood. Maguire, snarking cruelly, suggests Obama “will have to try harder to make the case that his current approach will keep America safe.” I dunno, he seems to have been handed a free throw. At least for now, absent, you know … The WaPo Takes Cheney's Side On Enhanced Interrogation by Tom McGuire WaPo sidles up to Dick Cheney. . . Let's just go back in time to the summer of 2008 when Scott Shane of the NY Times covered a lot of this ground. It appears that Obama will have to try harder to make the case that his current approach will keep America safe. right now all interrogations must comply with the Army Field Manual; Obama has a group still studying the belly slap, annoying rock and roll, walling, sleep deprivation, and the waterboard. I stand by my guess that when he thinks no one is looking Obama will re-instate everything except

Arctic Ice Grows 30 Per Cent In a Year
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-22-2009
"Predictions of “ice free” summer for first time in history completely debunked" "In February, Dr. Olav Orheim, head of the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat, told Xinhua, “If Norway’s average temperature this year equals that in 2007, the ice cap in the Arctic will all melt away, which is highly possible judging from current conditions.” As per usual, the reality has failed to match the hype of the climate doomsayers. According to collated data from the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Illinois, Arctic ice extent was 30 per cent greater on August 11, 2008 than it was on the August 12, 2007. This is a conservative estimate based on the map projection." Blue pixels represent increased ice coverage over the North Pole in the year since August 2007.

Ice Returns as Greenland Temps Plummet
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  8-15-2009    1
"The mayor cautioned against thinking that the freezing temperature indicated that global warming claims were overblown. He noted that a nearby glacier had retracted more in the past two decades than in recorded history. But he noted “‘We Greenlanders have acclimated to changing conditions over the past 1100 years,” said Frederiksen. “Temperatures change at regular intervals.”"

New El Niño Threatens World with Weather Woe
merrie
by merrie  8-3-2009    1
"Observations and dynamical model forecasts indicate El Niño conditions will continue to intensify and are expected to last through the northern hemisphere winter of 2009-10." The last El Niño was in 2006-07 and, at its peak, sea surface temperatures averaged about 0.9 degrees above normal. But this is a stage which has already been reached by this one. The last El Niño, comparatively weak though it was, is thought to have been partly responsible for the extraordinarily warm weather in Britain between the summer of 2006 and the spring of 2007: July 2006 was Britain's hottest month, autumn 2006 (September, October and November) was the warmest autumn, winter 2006-07 (December, January and February) was the second warmest in Britain, and April 2007 was our warmest April. People have forgotten this because there then began our recent cooler and wetter period, with Britain's two "washout summers" of 2007 and 2008, and they may, in turn,
