POPSEPA Rules Farm Dust NOT SAFE, Must Be Regulated But the U.S. District Court of Appeals in Washington ruled Tuesday that the EPA had already provided the evidence necessary to determine farm dust "likely is not safe." Michael Formica, a lawyer for the pork council, said this means farmers now face the daunting task of proving a negative - that the dust is not harmful. Formica said his and other groups will consider a further appeal. Farmers said they will be hard-pressed to meet the standards. In a letter sent Wednesday to the EPA, Grassley wrote that compliance would be impossible because of the dust produced in farmers' day-to-day activities. Grassley also has noted that because many rural roads are not paved, particulate readings could be affected by wind gusts that constantly change. "After all, God decides when the wind blows, not Chuck Grassley," he said. But the EPA said the regulation was overdue. http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/030109/bus_399791974.shtml

POPSStratfor: Hezbollah Gets Punk'd There were three men on board, one of whom said they represented EDL and that the purpose of their visit was to upgrade electricity meter switches in the neighborhood... The explosion occurred three hours after the presumably fake EDL van had left the building... ...Hezbollah uses numerous basements in the south Litani area as weapons depots in violation of U.N. Resolution 1701, which ended the 33-day military campaign by Israel against Hezbollah forces in Lebanon in July 2006 and called for Hezbollah’s disarmament. UNIFIL lacks the capability to enforce the resolution, and the Lebanese army lacks both the capability and the will to confront Hezbollah over this explosive issue... ...Hezbollah’s rearmament is naturally a concern for Israel, but the Israeli intelligence apparatus has ways to derail Hezbollah’s plans, and blowing up a munitions depot is not beyond its means.

POPSNew facts and new troubles for Mexico
The estimated million plus Mexicans returning to Mexico plus the many more who choose to stay home, when earlier they would have gone to the other side, means more pressure on the nation's development. In this situation the country's GDP shrunk nine percent in the first quarter and a bit over ten percent in the second one. Whatever fiscal and economic reforms the government has planned are still being planned. The president insists on using his power to fight a useless losing drug war and effectively sabotaged the economy by locking the nation down for a month so that we wouldn't get the flu. The country cannot provide opportunities to vast swaths of the population. Now there is another swath to add to the others: returning illegal immigrants and others. Vast numbers of young unemployed kids whose skills are mainly in how to break the law and profit by it somehow are swelling the populace of Mexico's provincial backwaters (where most illegal immigrants come from) quite outside the a

POPSScientists track down source of Earth's hum more: Previous studies suggested that waves from both shallow continental shelves and the deep ocean contribute to the Earth’s hum, but new data indicates otherwise. Based on measurements from a seismic observatory called the USArray EarthScope, most of the hum appears to originate from the Pacific coast of North America, with a smaller contribution from the west coast of Europe. Waves from the deep ocean don’t seem to make much hum at all. The data for this study, published Thursday in Geophysical Research Letters, was gathered from November 2006 to June 2007, so humming patterns might be different during the summer months.

POPSNew El Niño Threatens World with Weather Woe "Observations and dynamical model forecasts indicate El Niño conditions will continue to intensify and are expected to last through the northern hemisphere winter of 2009-10." The last El Niño was in 2006-07 and, at its peak, sea surface temperatures averaged about 0.9 degrees above normal. But this is a stage which has already been reached by this one. The last El Niño, comparatively weak though it was, is thought to have been partly responsible for the extraordinarily warm weather in Britain between the summer of 2006 and the spring of 2007: July 2006 was Britain's hottest month, autumn 2006 (September, October and November) was the warmest autumn, winter 2006-07 (December, January and February) was the second warmest in Britain, and April 2007 was our warmest April. People have forgotten this because there then began our recent cooler and wetter period, with Britain's two "washout summers" of 2007 and 2008, and they may, in turn,

POPSArctic Cooling Has Begun
The latest Arctic heat wave is not identical to the last " firstly it is higher, by maybe 20% in some places, and secondly, the hot-spots are different. But one thing is clear " it is driven by two distinctive factors " a 14% increase in clouds over the North Pole and Beaufort Sea between 1980-2000, and the incursion of warm Atlantic water under the ice and into the Beaufort Gyre. The rapid summer ice loss is due to melting from above (infra red from the clouds) and below (warm Atlantic water). The strength of the Beaufort Gyre determines how far Atlantic water penetrates the Arctic " when the Pacific Decadal Oscillation is warm and Alaskan Shelf winds are low, the gyre weakens and may reverse flow; when cold (as it has been since late 2006), the Alaskan interior cools, the winds strengthen and the gyre strengthens accordingly " there is a lag of a few years. Thus, this domino effect from the Pacific will eventually reach the area between Greenland and Norway and summer sea-ice

POPSAxar Properties S.L. Revealed In the summer of 2006 Vanessa Kjaerulff Jensen was hired by Paula Basham, the owner of the English Estate Agency “Axar Properties” on Torrox Costa – to look after the office on a full time basis. Vanessa was promised a contract from the start but every time she asked to see her contract, Paula Basham always had an excuse for why it wasn’t ready. When Vanessa complained about the contract in the beginning of January 2008, she was immediately fired by Paula Basham. This left her with no income, no right to paid maternity leave and even worse with no legal social security for her and her then unborn baby.

POPSclipped from: hosted.ap.org Cache of Ice Age fossils found in Los Angeles Such a rich find usually takes years to excavate. But with a deadline looming to build an underground parking garage for the next-door art museum, researchers boxed up the deposits and lifted them out of the ground using a massive crane. "It's like a paleontological Christmas," research team member Andie Thomer wrote in a blog post in July. The research dubbed "Project 23" - because it took 23 boxes to house the deposits - uncovered fossilized mammals as well as smaller critters including turtles, snails and insects. Separately, scientists found a well-preserved Columbian mammoth that they nicknamed Zed.
