The Sulzberger's Appear To Be Moving Toward End Times
merrie
by merrie  5-11-2009
His other compensation for running the company got slashed to $2.4 million in 2008, down from $4.4 million in 2006. The only sliver of good news for the family came last week following deep cost-cutting throughout the company to strip fat for possible sales. The moves sent shares up 4 percent Friday to $6.37, shoring up the trust's stock fortune to $56.6 million from its $30.8 million low three months earlier. But that's hardly enough to bankroll and restore the approximate $20 million a year the family had been spending on its lifestyle and personal charities -- even if they cash out voting-control shares at a premium.

Could aply to any newspaper
Unspun
by Unspun  2-28-2008
Unspun recently wrote about how The Jakarta Post is trying to cope with change and technology by revamping its website and trying to incorporate interactive features like RSS and comments -- although it could have gone further. The Post is apparently in good company - no less than The New York Times -- when it comes to Luddite journalists and board directors. Is Marc Andreessen too gloomy or are the days of the traditional newspaper numbered? Can dailies printed on paper survive the next few years if they do not have an interactive strategy to back them up? Andreessen may be gloomy but Unspun thinks he has a point. That's why Unspun began blogging and dabbling in new media: in a world where traditional media is of little importance, there is no need for PR persons of the traditional mold.

Who Hijacked The Primaries And What We MUST Do!
merrie
by merrie  1-31-2008    1
This is our party, not John McCain’s or Mel Martinez's, or Lindsay Graham’s. The Republican Party is THE conservative party dammit. Let’s admit it and take it back. RINOS and Liberals have taken the GOP plane hostage, and its time for us passengers to revolt…and do what has to be done -- "Let’s Roll" Sadly these 4 states have done more than set the tone for the other 46 -- they’ve dictated terms. Frankly I could extend the analogy to include Nevada, which is down to about 13% native -- but why beat a dead horse. What we have is the sick and twisted dreams of Pinch Sulzberger, Don Imus, Maureen Dowd, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews come true: the GOP has been forced to choose a nominee designed to cause the base to retch, and thereby not vote. Guaranteeing 4 years of Clinton score settling or Obama socializing entire corporate sectors

The "Old Grey Lady" Is Senile
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2007    1
According to the NY Times website, Clark Hoyt is the Public Editor and the reader's representative for the paper. Not that it might do much good, but I would be tickled pink if many of the readers and posters here, and especially those in the Empire state, would make their voices heard. Perchance we may get an apology (not holding my breath). He can be found at: public@nytimes.com or (212) 556-7652

Why NYT Will Not Have Same Fate As Dow Jones
Forbes Business
by Forbes Business  8-1-2007
This simple: there's no buyer who wants it the way Murdoch wanted DJ. Also worth noting: the Sulzbergers aren't the Bancrofts, though I'm sure the NYT's stock slide isn't earning Arthur a lot of pats on the back at thanksgiving. -- Dan Bigman
