Bomber Strikes at Pakistan Air Force
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-23-2009
On Thursday morning, a senior army officer, Brig. Moinuddin Haider, was assassinated by two gunmen who attacked his jeep during rush-hour traffic in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital. The Taliban had warned before the start of the campaign in South Waziristan that they planned to unleash attacks against Pakistan’s military assets. The Taliban attacked the headquarters of the Pakistani Army, in Rawalpindi, in a commando-style raid on October 10. The insurgents took more than 40 civilians and soldiers hostage for 20 hours, and more than 20 people were killed in the siege.

Hamas and al Qaeda-Linked Group Clash in Gaza By Bill Roggio
merrie
by merrie  8-16-2009    1
Hamas fighters attacked Moussa's mosque in Rafah as well as at other Jund Ansar Allah strongholds shortly after his announcement. The fighting took its toll on the military leadership of both groups. Abu Jibril Shimali, the commander of Hamas' Izzadin al Qassam Brigades, and Abu Abdullah al Suri, the military emir of Jund Ansar Allah are said to have been killed, although the reports have not been confirmed. Moussa was killed during an explosion at a compound he and others sought refuge in was attacked by Hamas. A Jund Ansar Allah suicide bomber is said to have detonated in the middle of a Hamas military unit. Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri, have been critical of Hamas for accommodating Israel and the west and for improperly waging jihad, or holy war. Hamas has accused al Qaeda of attempting to graft the Palestinian struggle onto the global jihad and has criticized al Qaeda's attacks worldwide.

The explosion was the first major attack in Kabul since February, when eight Taliban suicide bombers struck three government buildings, killing 20 people. The new attack was clearly aimed at the heart of the Western presence in the capital. The Nato headquarters – where the US military commander, General Stanley McChrystal, is based – is next to the US Embassy in the same street as the presidential palace and Afghanistan's transport ministry.

Bali bomber believed dead after bloody 17-hour siege
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-8-2009
Noordin's life on the run – and as a key recruiter, financier and planner – appeared to have come to a bloody end after a 17-hour siege when police, tipped off to his presence by two other arrested members of his group, stormed a mud-walled village house. "There was a shooting between the special detachment team and the people inside the house," said police spokesman Nanan Soekarna. "This house was our target." A police spokesman said later that Noordin had "succumbed to bullets and the impact of explosions".

Two U.S. Soldiers Killed By Suicide Bomb Attack
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2009
CENTCOM has yet to confirm the identity of the two soldiers killed during the suicide attack. But verification is expected shortly. On his MySpace.com page, Aaron wrote about his hobbies and posted pictures of his time in Aghanistan. “Hey my name is Aaron Fairbairn, I am 20 and in the army. I like to ride dirtbikes, go muddin and all of that kind of stuff. One of my favorite things to do is work on my truck when I break it. I have a yamaha yz 125 I haven’t got to ride it much because of work but i plan to go race it sometime,” he said in his ‘about me’ page. On Sunday, friends began writing messages on his page. “Aaron i will miss you little brother Love you RIP,” wrote one. “Aaron! I’m so sorry! Tell me it’s not true!” said another.

Afghanistan: US Soldiers Repel Complex Taliban Assault on Combat Outpost, Kill 22 Taliban Fighters....
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2009    1
The US Army counterattacked with "with counter fire, close air support and attack helicopters," according to a press release. Ten Haqqani Network fighters were killed and one was detained, the US military said. The Afghan Interior Ministry put the number of terrorists killed at 22, while some reports put the number killed at more than 30. The large number of enemy fighters killed during the counterattack indicates that an assault team was prepared to enter the combat outpost if the suicide bomber created a breach in the wall. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan, took credit for the attack. Mujahid claimed that more than 8,000 kg of explosives were used in the attack. In the past, the Taliban, al Qaeda, and allied terror groups have conducted numerous attacks of this nature in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and Yemen. The rocket attack is designed to cause the defending troops to take cover.

As someone with a long track record of encouraging interfaith dialogue, Dr Williams would have had no problem with a Muslim commissioner as long as he or she continued to cover the Christian faith adequately.

Iraqi Suicide Mommy Blows Up Her Child In Emergency Food Line
merrie
by merrie  4-29-2009    1
Even putting aside our baseline revulsion at terrorism, there are three especially hideous things that jump out from this: 1) A mother deliberately taking her (presumed) child with her as she immolates herself. For all the hundreds of suicide bombings that Iraq has already witnessed, this has got to be a first. 2) This was a line for food aid. Islamists have gone from attacking U.S. soldiers, to attacking Iraqi soldiers, to attacking police stations, to attacking the religious ceremonies of rival sects — on down the line of nihilism until, now, they are reduced to blowing up hungry people seeking sustenance. 3) This hideous crime was played on page four of The New York Times. And a quick scan of other media suggests it got similar B-rate treatment elsewhere.

Taliban's "Suicide Nurseries" ~ Hundreds Brainwashed
merrie
by merrie  4-22-2009    2
Ghazi moved to the neighbouring district of Tank in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), to save his second teenage son from the influence of his fellow tribesman and local warlord Baitullah Mehsud, who he blames for Haneef’s recruitment and death. But hundreds more children are still undergoing brainwashing at dozens of ‘suicide nurseries’ run by the ethnic Pashtun Taliban commander. Mehsud, in his 30s, has emerged as the most dangerous Taliban commander in Pakistan in recent years. He heads Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, an umbrella group for around a dozen Taliban outfits and has close links with Al Qaeda. The notorious commander is believed to have been behind several dozen suicide bombings across the country, including the one that killed former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in late 2007.

1996 An Israeli court convicted Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's confessed assassin of murder, then sentenced former law student Yigal Amir to life in prison. 1997 Dexter King, son of Martin Luther King Jr., met with James Earl Ray, the man in prison for the assassination of the civil rights leader. Ray denied having anything to do with the shooting, to which King replied, "I believe you." 1998 The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug Viagra, made by Pfizer, to fight male impotence. 2001 California regulators approved electricity rate hikes of up to 46 percent. 2002 A suicide bomber killed 29 Israelis during a Passover Seder in Netanya, Israel. 2002 Comedian Milton Berle died at age 93. 2006 Al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui testified at his federal trial that he was supposed to hijack a fifth airplane on Sept. 11, 2001, and fly it into the White House. 2007 NFL owners voted 30-2 to make the video replay system a permanent officiating tool.

Tragic Workplace Accident
merrie
by merrie  3-27-2009    2
At least they all got to say goodbye. (& allahu akbar) That’s something. The incident happened in Helmand province in southern Afghanistan where mainly British troops are struggling against a growing Taliban-led insurgency. In a separate incident in Helmand, nine policemen were killed when Taliban insurgents attacked a police post in Nari Sarraj district, the Interior Ministry said. Elsewhere, four Taliban insurgents were killed and seven policemen and two civilians wounded during a battle just outside Ghazni city, about 200 km (125 miles) southwest of the capital Kabul, a spokesman for the provincial governor said. On Friday, Washington is set to unveil a review of its strategy in Afghanistan, which is expected to emphasise the need to expand Afghan security forces and strengthen the country's heavily aid-dependent economy. Administration Enabled Bonuses So They Could Stoke Populist Outrage?
merrie
by merrie  3-22-2009    1
I mean, I spent a long time to having people try to be — change it. And obviously they came. And the alternative was losing the amendment. And I didn’t think we should do that at all. BLITZER: Who asked you at the Treasury Department to do it? DODD: Well, they were people, obviously, coming and negotiating with the staffs back and forth. And I don’t know their names specifically, it was at a staff level, people were talking about it. Gee, would this be the same Treasury Department from the same administration that were “shaking with outrage” over these very bonuses? Dodd’s a liar, but he’s not the only one in this debacle. A conspiratorially-minded person might conclude that the administration deliberately enabled the bonuses so they could stoke populist outrage and push through more of their anti-business agenda. H/T suitably flip
