POPSCapitalism again proves to the the source of the problem
This article is a must-read. The unfair capitalist healthcare system causes a glut on doctors in rich areas where they can earn more, and a sparsity in areas where they would earn less, like poor communities. Do people still think that America can get by without reforming Healthcare? Doctor's salaries need to be standardized, so a doctor working in a dirt-poor area of Arkansas is going make the same amount (by scale of skill) as a doctor in Malibu, California. 50 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million underinsured Americans are too many people to be excluded from proper, complete healthcare. It's criminal, and amoral. C'mon, all you right-wingers! Don't you think that women and newborn children dying from perfectly preventable causes during childbirth is more important that wondering if federal money is going to perform abortions? Don't you think that people ending up losing limbs or eyesight due to lack of care for their diabetes is more important than getting all work

POPSOur Neighbor Rocks "I'm not sure what he thought was cool, that a rock star lived in the suburbs next to neighbors who looked like us, or that the rock star would deign to speak to the old folks, let alone invite them to a concert?"

POPSCape Town Villas The city itself is contained in a small area, known as the City Bowl, underneath Table Mountain and Signal Hill. The feel of the city is dominated by its historic role as a trading port linking Africa and Europe, with elegant colonial buildings, cobbled streets, open markets and certainly a relaxed, laid-back attitude. Cape Town's "suburbs" stretch to the north of the city and more than 30 km to the south.

POPSHistory of Meralco Trivia and history of the Meralco Company. The Manila Electric Railroad and Light Company was incorporated in the state of new jersey. The incorporation followed Ordinance No. 44 of the Municipal Board of Manila, which was passed on March 24, 1903, granting Detroit entrepreneur Charles M. Swift a franchise "to operate an electric street railway service and to furnish electric current for light, heat, and power in the city and its suburbs. In 1919, Meralco and its affiliate operating the Pasig line of the street railway network reorganized and merged into a single new entity, this time incorporated in the Philippines under the name Manila Electric Company, the official corporate name it bears today.

POPSThe Crisis of Global Land Use
Meeting these huge new agricultural demands will be one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. At present, it is completely unclear how (and if) we can do it. If this wasn't enough, we must also address the massive environmental impacts of our current agricultural practices, which new evidence indicates rival the impacts of climate change. Consider the following. Already, we have cleared or converted more than 35 percent of the earth's ice-free land surface for agriculture, whether for croplands, pastures or rangelands. In fact, the area used for agriculture is nearly 60 times larger than the area of all of the world's cities and suburbs. Since the last ice age, nothing has been more disruptive to the planet's ecosystems than agriculture. What will happen to our remaining ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, if we need to double or triple world agricultural production, while simultaneously coping with climate change? Yes, it is an inconvenient truth as the origi

POPSRacially Exclusive Suburbs Across U.S. Dubbed the New 'Whitopia' Benjamin is not the first to describe this phenomenon. In his 2008 book The Big Sort, journalist Bill Bishop detailed how Americans have been parceling themselves out into increasingly homogeneous communities in which everyone votes for the same political party, goes to the same church and holds the same values. This situation, Bishop says, has its good and bad points. "The good part is you get this incredible variety from place to place; places zoom off into their own cultural trajectories. But what happens is people lose touch with those who disagree with them. What happens is a nation incapable of compromise; you have this kind of national stalemate."

POPSDocumentary - The Boy Who Sees Without Eyes An amazing story I was reminded of when I saw another one like it recently. So accurate is his technique that he is even able to go rollerblading on the street, negotiating narrow gaps between parked cars that even sighted children might find challenging. In fact, Ben’s mother, Aquanetta, inds that her son is far more attentive to the dangers of the road than his friends, always the first to move onto the pavement when a car approaches. Ben first noticed his talent at the age of seven, when at summer camp. While it began as just a habit, Ben explains, he soon realised that it had potential benefits for navigation. He began to practise every day and developed the system to the point it is at today. It is the fact that Ben is entirely self-taught that is perhaps most astonishing and has led people to use the term ‘genius’ when referring to the boy. (Excerpt from demand.five.tv)

POPSStem Cell Research: Medics Now Under Police Investigation did not deny or admit to the charges of abuse against him during the hour long interview in his private IVF clinic in the suburbs of Nairobi. “I have worked with a lot of women about 64 of them since 1986. One has to do what they have to do in order to make it and help find a cure for many diseases affecting our society and the world,” said Dr Gichuhi. The investigations boss said that as many as 100 women, their whereabouts could not be known to date. At least 36 women have gone missing in the last three weeks alone. Researchers from the University of Wisconsin, Manitoba in Canada are also under investigations. However, some researchers have long fled the country after realizing that charges may be brought against them.

POPSBlack progressives flee to conservative suburbs "The black flight progressives' contradiction leads to cognitive dissonance, or tensions, resulting from simultaneously holding contradictory ideas. The individual must either abandon their old belief, or try to rationalize the dissonance. Like everyone else, black flight progressives want safe streets, quality schools, and a stable environment for themselves and their families. However, instead of holding the liberal Democratic operatives (often black themselves) who control the central city's school board, police department, mayor's office, and other institutions accountable and making adjustments in their vote to secure more desirable outcomes, the black flight progressives flee."

POPSEnglish Speaker Kicked Off Bus The driver, apparently alarmed by her "aggressive" Muslim passenger, called the cops, cleared the bus, and warned the bus behind her not to pick up any of her stranded passengers. Although he is investigating the incident, Michel Labrecque, the head of the Société de transport de Montréal, defended the driver's action because "French is the language of work" in Québec. Labrecque acknowledged that many bus drivers are bilingual, and that bilingual drivers tend to be placed on routes covering tourist areas and the English-speaking suburbs. But he also insisted that it would be against the law to require any of the drivers to actually speak English even if they can, "Ça, c'est interdite."

POPSFire threat empties Athens suburb Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers - backed by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft dropping water - are battling the fires but they are too numerous and widespread to contain. "The situation is tragic. Fires are out of control on many fronts," said a regional Athens governor, Yiannis Sgouros. more than 30,000 acres of land had been burnt in what he described as "an ecological disaster". Many residents of the threatened towns and suburbs have fled by car, motorbike and on foot, but others have stayed behind to try to defend their homes. Two children's hospitals, a summer camp and a psychiatric clinic have been evacuated.
