Wash U Shuts Down Freedom Memorial on 20 Year Anniversary of End of Communism- It Was Too Offensive Video
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009
“We’re hoping to elevate the thinking of students about the connection between socialism, tyranny, and murder. Too often, we tend to think about state control in the abstract. This event is an opportunity to show the student body what socialism really is,” said junior Dirk Doebler, student leader of Young Americans for Liberty and lead organizer of the event. “We’re just twenty years away from the collapse of the Soviet Union’s despotic enslavement of hundreds of millions of people, yet everyone seems to forget that socialism killed over 150,000,000 people in the 20th century. All that gets lost in the convenient narrative our professors would have us believe. With this event, we’re striking down false notions. We’re speaking truth to power.” This event aims at showing the horrors of the implementation of that idea. ** There is more video to come of the university shutting down the gulag.

The WHO may have cried,"Wolf!"

Now that the WHO got everybody scared to death, our "pandemic" is waning. It has been difficult to sort out fact from fiction. As with most issues the truth may be all about one's perspective. A relative truth. I think for many of us, whether we get vaccinated or not will depend on whether we trust our governments and institutions, as much as, the science.

Something's Wrong
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  9-12-2009
Murder is wrong. The taking of another life, except in self-defense, is wrong. So is the politicizing of events like this. Notice that almost no coverage is given to the other man killed in this incident. Is his life worth less than the "Sign Guys" life? It seems that the alleged killer held a grudge against 3 men in this small town. The police caught him before he was able to harm the 3rd man. For this we should be thankful to the law enforcement officers and the high school students who witnessed the 1st killing and took down the license plate number of his car. Extreme actions, on both sides, always engender extreme responses. It would do us a world of good to learn to take a breath and approach these issues with our brains instead of our clubs.

Steve Russell (R) Unmitigated Audacity (BALLS) “As far as I am concerned, this is not civics education — it gives the appearance of creating a cult of personality. This is something you’d expect to see in NORTH KOREA or in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq,” – Republican Senator Steve Russell said about Obama’s speech to students http://www.ardmoreite.com/news/x1595419495/Obamas-speech-to-students-causes-public-outcry?view=print NORTH KOREA? WTF! I can’t believe this Horse’s Patootie (F**KFACE) has the unmitigated audacity (BALLS) to compare President Barack Obama to North Korea’s Kim Jong Il who has no empathy, sympathy or mercy for his fellow man. (There are over 20 million North Koreans living a horrible existence. Some starve to death every day. Others are either outright killed by the government or die from the abuse of torture and from being kept in horrible prisons.) Someone ought to string this Horse’s Patootie (F**KFACE) up by his unmitigated audacity (BALLS).

Iranian Student Protests (1999)
merrie
by merrie  7-21-2009
Also known as 18th of Tir and Kuye Daneshgah Disaster Persian فاجعه کوی دانشگاه in Iran 7"13 July 1 were, at that time, the most widespread and violent public protests to occur in Iran since the early years of the Iranian Revolution. The protests began on July 8 with peaceful demonstrations in Tehran against the closure of the reformist newspaper, Salam. Following the demonstrations, a student dormitory was raided by riot police that night during which a student was killed. The raid sparked six days of demonstrations and rioting throughout the country, during which at least three other people were killed and more than 200 injured. In the aftermath of these incidents, more than seventy students disappeared. In addition to an estimated 1200-1400 detainees, the "whereabouts and condition" of five students named by Human Rights Watch whom are believed to be detained by Islamic authorities remain unknown" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_student_protests,_July_1999

Iran Opposition Finds New Ways to Protest

Khamenei ordered Iran election fraud, says ex-president VIENNA,AUSTRIA Jul 07 2009 Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is personally behind the alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential election, former Iranian president Abolhassan Banisadr claimed in Vienna late on Monday. "The regime is edging closer to the abyss and is holding on to power solely by means of violence and terror," said Banisadr, who was Iran's first elected president following the 1979 Islamic revolution. The regime wanted to keep the population in a permanent state of uncertainty and fear and so systematic terror was institutionally organised and controlled by the regime and Khamenei, he added. "They don't want Iranians to be able to even think about protests in their own homes." Intellectuals and students were the main targets since they were regarded as the driving force behind the resistance, Banisadr continued. "Reformers and liberal pragmatists are to be wiped out."

The Significance of 18th of Tir ~ July 9th
merrie
by merrie  7-7-2009    1
. . . . . disillusioned, but also hardened and more fearless. I have been in Iran on the 18th of Tir several times over the past eight years, and have seen firsthand that security is always heightened that day. The regime knows that in its love for anniversaries, they’ve created a volatile beast that may need taming. Through the events of the past month it’s become very clear that deep cracks within the establishment exist, and they are now visible to everyone. A group of influential clerics in Qom have gone so far as to use the imagery of loss and mourning to begin to compare the recent death of protestors to those killed in the revolution and the war with Iraq. In a statement issued on the 4th of July, they asked to save “the dignity that was earned with the blood of tens of thousands of martyrs.” While such comparisons may seem early to some observers, the authors of the letter fully understand their intentions in making such a bold proclamation.

Between Mousavi's statement yesterday - "If they arrest me, go on strike" - the students calling for a strike on Tuesday, the Ayatollah Montazeri calling for "three days of mourning (read: general strike that uses another name) for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday," and the Bus Workers Union calling for a day of national education on Friday, the various tendencies in the resistance - electoral, student, religious and labor - are circling around the same idea. My guess is that before the week is out they'll synchronize their watches and all strike at once, quite plausibly when one of the labor sectors suddenly calls out a Wildcat Strike that electrifies the nation, bringing the other sectors into quick mobilization to seize upon the moment.

The Latest From Iran

by merrie  6-21-2009    1
What should President Obama do about Iran? He can do what he does best: Talk. He should roll out the TOTUS and give the Iranian mullahs and moguls an old-fashioned spanking. Complete with direct quotes from the Koran. Alas, this will not happen. Dr. Charles Krauthammer this week said of President Obama: “All hangs in the balance. The Khamenei regime is deciding whether to do a Tiananmen. And what side is the Obama administration taking? None.” Ouch. I feel the pain not for the target of Dr. Krauthammer’s words, but for the rest of us. 53% of the nation gave 100% of the world a leader of the free world someone who, when danger comes, dares to vote " present. Such a timorous approach to adversity is decidedly James Buchanan-like, as opposed to Harry Trumanesque or John Kennedyesque. There is much intelligence in not taking unnecessary risks. There is greater ignorance in trying to avoid all risks at all times.

People Power!

SILENCE is complicity. Our president’s refusal to take a forthright moral stand on the side of the Iranian freedom marchers is read in Tehran as a blank check for the current regime. The fundamentalist junta has begun arresting opposition figures, with regime mouthpieces raising the prospect of the death penalty. Inevitably, there are claims that dissidents have been “hoarding weapons and explosives.” Foreign media reps are under house arrest. Cellphone frequencies are jammed. Students are killed and the killings disavowed. And our president is “troubled,” but doesn’t believe we should “meddle” in Iran’s internal affairs. (Meddling in Israel’s domestic affairs is just fine, though.) We just turned our backs on freedom. Again. … For decades, Washington policymakers from both parties have prodded Iranians to throw off their shackles. Last Friday, millions of Iranians stood up. And we’re standing down. That isn’t diplomacy. It’s treachery

Iranian Opposition Calls for Rally

therefore they can't trust their vote recounts, either," said cleric Ali Akbar Mohtashamipour, a spokesman for Mr. Mousavi's camp. The rallies in Tehran were mostly calm, following Monday's protest that left seven people dead. On Sunday, five students at Tehran University were reported killed, though that figure hasn't been confirmed by state media. On Tuesday, the two sides kept their distance from one another and the uniformed security forces stood at the sides of the rallies. Many opposition demonstrators said they had come out despite a government ban and warnings by Mr. Mousavi to avoid confrontation after Monday's bloody rally, to show they won't give in to pressure. "Now that our movement has started, it must continue. If they kill us, we will get more resolved,"said Mohamad Reza, a 24-year-old textile seller in Tehran's Grand Bazaar. "They just want Mousavi because he told them he will give them freedom," said one Ahmadinejad supporter.

WHO declares swine flu pandemic
chara
by chara  6-11-2009
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global flu pandemic after holding an emergency meeting. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said that upgrading the swine flu outbreak to a pandemic should not unduly concern people. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8094655.stm It means the swine flu virus is spreading in at least two regions of the world with rising cases being seen in the UK, Australia, Japan and Chile. WHO chief Dr Margaret Chan said the move did not mean the virus was causing more severe illness or more deaths. "Classifying the virus as a pandemic does not mean that the virus has suddenly become more deadly," says the BBC's health correspondent, Jane Dreaper. "But it does send a clear signal to health officials and businesses to continue planning for the possibility of large numbers of people catching the virus."
