POPSWhy you aren’t nearly as unique as you think? "Since 1994, photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have been trekking the globe together, recording Exactitudes — “exact attitudes” captu(red) in people’s peculiar dress code as an attempt to differentiate themselves from others or identify with a group."

POPSFreebase - a database about everything Part of what makes this open database unique is that it spans domains, but requires that a particular topic exist only once in Freebase -- even if it might normally be found in multiple databases. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger would appear in a movie database as an actor, a political database as a governor, and in a bodybuilder database as a Mr. Universe. In Freebase, however, there is only one topic for Arnold Schwarzenegger that brings all these facets together. The unified topic is a single reconciled identity, which makes it easier to find and contribute information about the linked world we live in.

POPSFollowing the Alpha Geeks for fun and profit This was extracted from the stream of messy data coming out of the DevLearn 2008 Conference... (wherever it is being held...) I love the term "Alpha-Geek" and think of myself as a Beta-Geek with Alpha-Geek tendencies.

POPSGay Brains Structured Like Those Of The Opposite Sex But then those of us who are "different" knew this all along. It's also interesting to note this from the article: "The regions involved in phobia, anxiety and depression overlap with the pattern we see from the amygdala," says Savic. This is significant, she says, and fits with data showing that women are three times as likely as men to suffer from mood disorders or depression. Gay men have higher rates of depression too, she says, but it's difficult to know whether this is down to biology, homophobia or simply feelings of being "different". HA! Those of us who are gay or bisexual have PLENTY to be depressed about living in a society that refuses to accept us.

POPSAmerica the Ugly: The Mentally Ill, Behind Bars The civil rights movement of the 1960's was critical in making society consider how a stigmatized group, the mentally ill, should rejoin society at large. Turning the clock back to an earlier era when hospitals would again be an asylum except for exceedingly few people is both unrealistic and retrogressive. Today's solution continues to be the development of small, noninstitutional yet structured places within the community where people live, get treatment and are afforded rehabilitation in social and vocational skills.

POPSOn internal Project Management tools at Google
Baseline Mag is a great Project Management resource for those who are keen on the subject. I also like Gantthead very much. A more traditional project tracking application would use a form to make users plug the data into different fields and checkboxes, giving the computer more structured data to process. But instead of making things easier for the computer, Google’s approach is to make things easier for the user and make the computer work harder. Employees submit their reports as an unstructured e-mail, and the project tracking software works to “understand” the content of those e-mail notes in the same way that Google’s search engine extracts meaning from Web pages. Those project tracking reports go into a repository—searchable, of course—so that managers can dip in at any time for an overview on the progress of various efforts. Other Google employees register their interest in a project they want to track, regardless of whether they have any official connection to that proje

"Wir versuchen die Weltdatenbank zu schaffen, mit allen Informationen dieser Welt", sagte John Markoff gegenüber der New York Times. Tim O'Reilly, Benutzer der Alpha Phase, sagt über Freebase "es arbeitet wie ein System, mit dem man die Synapsen eines globalen Gehirn aufbaut".

POPSRead/WriteWeb gives 2007 web predictions Too long an article to selectively pick and choose what to clip, so I just clipped the main topics to give an idea of what is covered. Most of this doesn't come as a surprise, but it's interesting to see it all laid out in one place.
