POPSA Most Private Evolution Trying to understand counterintuitive sexual parts and habits follows in the best of scientific traditions. As Charles Darwin worked on evolution, he pondered male phenomena that looked useless, or even harmful, for surviving. Outsized horns on male beetles puzzled him, as did male birds with gorgeous plumage. Out of this consternation came his insight into a process he called sexual selection, which he distinguished from natural selection. There may be survival of the fittest, but there’s also survival of the sexiest. “The sight of a feather in a peacock’s tail, whenever I gaze at it, makes me sick!” Darwin wrote in a letter to the botanist Asa Gray, albeit in a whimsical paragraph. Nauseated or not, Darwin was willing to step beyond survival of the fittest.

POPSWhere Have All the Sunspots Gone? If the world does face another mini Ice Age, it could come without warning. Evidence for abrupt climate change is readily found in ice cores taken from Greenland and Antarctica. Could something like this happen again? There’s no way to tell, and because the changes can happen all within one decade—we might not even see it coming. Sorokhtin believes that a lack of sunspots does indicate a coming cooling period based on certain past trends and early records. In fact, he calls manmade climate change "a drop in the bucket" compared to the fierce and abrupt cold that can potentially be brought on by inactive solar phases. Sorokhtin’s advice: "Stock up on fur coats"…just in case.

POPSThe Sunspot Enigma: The Sun is “Dead”—What Does it Mean for Earth?
And here's the kicker--We may have an ice age while preparing for global warming---are you cackling in glee yet, Willhelm? Geophysicist Phil Chapman, the first Australian to become an astronaut with NASA, said pictures from the US Solar and Heliospheric Observatory also show that there are currently no spots on the sun. He also noted that the world cooled quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C. "This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930," Dr Chapman noted in The Australian recently. If the world does face another mini Ice Age, it could come without warning. Evidence for abrupt climate change is readily found in ice cores taken from Greenland and Antarctica. One of the best known examples of such an event is the Younger Dryas cooling, which occurred about 12,000 years ago, named after the arctic wildflower found in northern European sediments. This event began and ended rat

POPSThe Legacy of Charles Fort Many people over the space of 5000 yrs of human civilization have claimed to be prophets, messiahs, holy men or the Illuminated as compared to the rest of us "mere" normals. Some have claimed to be masters of the Black Arts (Aleister Crowley, et al) and some have claimed to be immortal or possessing long lives (Comte de Saint-Germain, Cagliostro, John Dee) or incredible psychic awareness (Edgar Cayce, Uri Gellar, Madame Blavatsky) but as far as I know only one man made his life out of collecting facts that were witnessed by many and researched diligently by him that still astound us. You have seen the kinds of things I am talking about on the X-Files or read of it in the Tabloids, but this man never took it as more than a wonderful reach that man's scientific knowledge was far from complete. Charles Fort only collected curiosities as I do. He was my inspiration. This is his legacy.

POPSStrange Things Afoot-Run For Your Life!
3) Papers falling into the trashcan. Please refer your boss to appropriate experts in astronomy, mechanics, and theoretical physics. During this dangerous time, it is essential that all soul-deadened middle-managers understand it is simply not your fault your assignments won't stay on the desk. 4) Fat people falling off diets. Please refer to your body in that high-school bikini you can still "fit into." 5) Ice-cream falling off cones. This only happens when you are derelict in your ice-cream eating duties. Have you no shame? 6) Time falling off clocks. Despite the widespread transition to digital, this is expected to remain a significant problem in the coming months, as the minute and hour hands alike are pulled down swiftly toward the poles of 6 and 12 (6 + 6). Inconclusive data is leading some scientists to conjecture the end of the world is near, and to encourage their lab assistants to experiment further with observed phenomenon No. 1. POPSThe Hot Ticket For Housewives Ok, I've been dressing like Jackie Warner for years. And in my day, I had her fierce abs. So what is up with straight women falling for her? It's a strange phenomena that says something about women I think. Can admiration cross over into desire? Maybe, but I can't speak for straight women as I've never been straight. Since I've been big into working out for years, I always admire people with discipline. And it does take discipline. But I think it's silly to get reality tv crushes. How can you have a crush on someone you don't even know? But I watch the show and I sometimes think it's funny that Jackie gets all the hot women the guys want. Still yet, I save my admiration for the important ppl in my life. The ones who mean the most to me. They are my "Jackie Warner's". Too bad they don't get as much recognition; they sure deserve it :)
