Birthers and anti-choicers: one and the same?
Lexica
by Lexica  8-4-2009    1
More: The birther conspiracy theory works the same way---pointing out evidence and logical arguments only expands the size and scope of the conspiracy in the minds of birthers. In fact the “Obama faked his birth certificate and was born outside of the U.S.” theory apparently erupted in part from an earlier conspiracy theory over Obama's middle name . With birthers, as with anti-choicers, more evidence of reality just gets them further into the thick of imagining even more complex and strange conspiracies. And just as the anti-choicers have moved on to concocting theories about how Planned Parenthood is part of a child sex ring that they’re covering up, I suspect the birther thing may grow in ways that are frightening in their complexity and lack of touch with reality.

Earth, the moon and the sun are all bound together by gravity, which keeps us going around the sun and keeps the moon going around us as it goes through phases. The moon makes a trip around Earth every 29.5 days. But the orbit is not a perfect circle.

How many memories fit in your brain? More than we thought
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  9-15-2008    1
These results are going to necessitate some re-thinking the literature. It suggests that our brains are storing a lot more information than many of us thought just a little while ago. It also suggests a very strange interaction between time and memory strength that will need to be better understood.

Blackbeard (S9 Biography)
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-17-2008
The Scourge of the Spanish Main and the last Great Pirate of the Age of Sail (Jean LaFitte was a smuggler) Blackbeard's life is shrouded in myth and legend and facts about him are verd hard to verify 300 years later. Edward Teach or possibly Thatch, was famous for several things that are documented and reek of the strange and as Kenneth Hite says, High Weirdness. He would drink a mixture of gunpowder and rum set aflame... Talk about a Belch you do not want to be around. He tied "slow matches" (used for lighting cannons) into his hair and beard so there would be a wreath of smoke around his head. He shot his best friend and first mate, Israel Hands in the knee, crippling him for life just a day before his death at Okecroake Island off NC. When Israel asked why, Teach said he was saving his life! (Knew about his own death? Planned it himself?) Weirdest Fact: Held Charleston, SC hostage for several weeks until his ransom was paid - a box of Native herbs and Tobacco... See what I

The Mythic History of the Werewolf
revenantdm
by revenantdm  6-28-2008    1
As usual I tend to gravitate my clipping towards the strange, unusual, or just highly weird. The Graeco-Roman myths have always been a favorite of mine but there were some facts here I did not even know of. The ways of becoming a werewolf, yes... but that at least TWO of the most important gods of the ancient Greeks were worshiped as Wolf-Gods was new to me.

The Legacy of Charles Fort
revenantdm
by revenantdm  6-19-2008
Many people over the space of 5000 yrs of human civilization have claimed to be prophets, messiahs, holy men or the Illuminated as compared to the rest of us "mere" normals. Some have claimed to be masters of the Black Arts (Aleister Crowley, et al) and some have claimed to be immortal or possessing long lives (Comte de Saint-Germain, Cagliostro, John Dee) or incredible psychic awareness (Edgar Cayce, Uri Gellar, Madame Blavatsky) but as far as I know only one man made his life out of collecting facts that were witnessed by many and researched diligently by him that still astound us. You have seen the kinds of things I am talking about on the X-Files or read of it in the Tabloids, but this man never took it as more than a wonderful reach that man's scientific knowledge was far from complete. Charles Fort only collected curiosities as I do. He was my inspiration. This is his legacy.

When That Good Night Falls, We Want Our Stars to Shimmer
gingembre
by gingembre  5-26-2008    1
News of Senator Edward Kennedy's malignant brain tumor and its media coverage prompted these insights into the disadvantages of being a celebrity when tragedy strikes. "We have a strange kind of intimacy with celebrities. Once they reach a certain level of fame, we tend to believe that we are owed something...They pay for the adulation, the success, even the so-called free stuff with their privacy." "But when the news is especially harsh -- when the diagnosis is deadly -- we realize we don't want to know that much, after all. After getting a look at the tragic facts, we want a "luckiest man alive" speech. Celebrities are supposed to amuse, enlighten, appall and outrage. They can make us envious. But they are never supposed to make us cry." :(
