POPS"Drained" oceans reveal epic landscapes ...Big Island of Hawaii is practically little when seen with its underwater flanks exposed. Measured from the seabed, the island's active volcano Mauna Loa is the world's tallest mountain--some 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) taller than Mount Everest. The Big Island was gradually thrust upward out of the Pacific, likely by a plume of lava deep beneath the seafloor. Those same slow forces look to be at work beneath a new volcano off the southeastern end of the Big Island, Loihi. Ten thousand or a hundred thousand years into the future, Loihi should emerge as the latest and hottest new Hawaiian island.

POPSTaking High Anxiety To Another Level ] loves to "hike". So off we go a few weekends ago on what I would fondly call a "forest march". No matter, I got to hold her hand (even if I did keep looking over my shoulder the entire time) Anyways, we get to this damn mountain top like an hour later and the view is magnificent and I'm kicking my arse for forgetting my digital camera when she decides to look over the edge. I completely freaked out because: 1. She cannot walk through her living room without tripping on something. 2. I felt dizzy 20 feet away safely hanging onto a electric tower. Turns out there is a simple explanation for this! “As you age, your reaction time slows, you lose confidence in your body’s ability to handle physical demands, your sense of balance maybe is a little off,” said Harold Steinitz, a director of the Anxiety and Stress Disorders Institute of Maryland. “You become aware of that, and it affects you.” BUT, It seems after a while, you forget to be anxious.

POPS Sen. Reid Cries 'Bankruptcy' In Front Of Reporters The SEC has been issuing subpoenas for an investigation into rumor-driven market manipulation. Of course, Harry Reid stood up in broad daylight to talk about a troubled insurer "with a name that everyone knows," so his contribution was merely obtuse. And predictably destructive. The steep drop in the share prices of insurance companies Thursday destroyed wealth for uncounted middle-class investors holding onto stock in companies still considered healthy. It calls to mind *Senator Chuck Schumer's public suggestion in July that troubled IndyMac Bank "could face collapse." It did, after a deposit run. Senator Schumer said criticizing his action was akin to blaming "the fire on the guy who called 911." The nation's shareholders would sleep better at night if some Members of Congress enrolled in Arsonists Anonymous.
