POPSAnubis stands guard at Texas airport "I'm all for wider exposure for the Egyptian gods, and very much approve of setting up monolithic art for them in public places. But ya know, maybe they could have picked someone other than the god of death and the guide of souls into the underworld to honor at a major airport. Just saying." (a quote by Sannion at LJ, who alerted me to this story)

POPSBali Hindus Challenge Indonesian Porn Legislation It's time for a clip that has nothing to do with US politics: Usually when we hear about religious minorities making a fuss about anti-porn laws, it's because they're not restrictive enough. But Bali's 93% majority Hindus fear that the new, draconian laws being contemplated by the rest of Indonesia's Muslim majority will trample on local customs such as erotic temple statuary and threaten the tourist trade - skimpy is a word that barely describes the swimwear on Bali's beaches (pun intended) Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika said, "Many people in Papua still live naked or half-naked. Are we going to arrest them all?" Bali is home to Legian beach, the only publicly acknowledged clothing-optional beach in Indonesia.

POPSMacys Thanksgiving Parade Water Globe for 2007 I love these annual snowglobes. I have the one from 2000, which may be the last one to contain the World Trade Center. This one is particularly nice. The ones that incorporate a snowglobe into statuary can be particularly charming. Of course, it wouldn't be complete without the miniature Tom Turkey float. $65.00 at Macys

POPSGreek statuary showing reconstructed pigmentation Archaeologist Vinzenz Brinkmann has reconstructed the original painting scheme that colored many classical sculptures. The effect is startling. See the NYTimes, http://snipr.com/1sesr. This is the best collection of photos I could find, but it's short on information; plus, it's in Danish.
