and the Birthplace is:............................?????
mountainpalm
by mountainpalm  1-4-2010    3
Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro, claimed Obama was born in Queens Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, a testimony reported as fact by several news sources and the myth-busting site Snopes.com. Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii But after WND drew attention to a letter from the president declaring as his birthplace the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu instead, news sources and websites jumped to scrub the Queens location and replace it with Kapi'olani. The Advertiser also reports Obama was born "at what at the time was known as the Kapiolani Maternity & Gynecological Hospital." The White House, however, has thus far refused to verify which hospital the president claims as his birthplace or whether the letter – purportedly from President Obama claiming Kapi'olani – is, in fact, real.

Making People Disappear: Our Tax Dollars at Work
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  12-19-2009
"In addition to publicly listed field offices and detention sites, ICE is holding prisoners in 186 unlisted, unmarked locations, many in suburban office parks or commercial spaces." Sounds kind of totalitarian, doesn't it? Alternet has had a BOOM week in great articles. Check it out! More from the article below: Alison Parker, deputy director of Human Rights Watch, wrote a December comprehensive report on ICE transit policies, "Locked Up Far Away." ...... violates the UN's Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the United States is a signatory. She explained that the government must provide "an impartial authority to review the lawfulness of custody. Part and parcel is the ability of somebody to find the person and to make their presence known to a court." The challenge of being unable to find people in detention centers, documented in the Human Rights Watch report, is worsened when one does not even know where to look.....ICE has created a network of secret jails."

K is for Kayaking- And all the other stuff you can do in the great outdoors across America's amazing national and state parks. L is for Liberty - While we still have some left, it might be a good idea to protect it. M is for Meditation and Massage therapy - Both are really healthy, relaxing activities available all across America. N is for Nutritional supplements - Even though the FDA has tried to destroy the industry, you can still find an amazing assortment of nutritional supplements across the USA. O is for Organics - Thank God we have chemical-free foods and personal care products available -- and an organization working to protect them (www.OrganicConsumers.org). California's old-growth redwoods: Tree therapy amid ancient coastal giants
Lexica
by Lexica  10-22-2009
More: The national spotlight is being cast on the park again this month with the Redwood Empire featured in National Geographic magazine. The centerpiece is a fold-out photograph of one of the park's giants, the Iluvatar Tree, the world's third-largest coast redwood at 20 1/2 feet in diameter and 320 feet tall… Of the trails that provide access to old-growth in California, the James Irvine Loop is one of the best. This loop is a 7.5-mile round trip that provides a route past a succession of giants. It's easy enough that most anybody can simply walk a half mile and back to get a feel for an ancient forest. It's long enough that the entire loop delivers a sense of discovery and awe with each grove, and the good, clean feeling that comes with hiking a few hours in a pristine landscape. This trip can change how you feel about things for a long time. Big trees can do that.

New Oklahoma law will publicly post details of women's abortions online
Lexica
by Lexica  10-8-2009    6
More: “They’re really just trying to frighten women out of having abortions ,” Keri Parks, director of external affairs at Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, said. The Center for Reproductive Rights is challenging the law, arguing that “it violates the Oklahoma Constitution because it ‘ covers more than one subject ’ — a challenge that previously worked to strike down an abortion ultrasound law.” Too bad "because it's a gross violation of privacy and nobody's business but the woman's and her doctor's" doesn't seem to be one of the factors. NOTE: Comments claiming that abortion is murder or insulting women who have abortions or the doctors who perform them will be deleted . Take it somewhere else if you want to have that discussion.

Wolf Hunts Will Go On; Judge Denies Injunction Bid
merrie
by merrie  9-18-2009    1
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and Idaho Fish and Game Commission maintained that wolf populations would not be endangered by the hunts, and Molloy found this argument more persuasive. “The defendants have offered scientific evidence that no irreparable harm will occur if the 2009 wolf hunts occur in Idaho and Montana,” Molloy stated. “Plaintiffs have failed to offer any contrary evidence. Good news in the bad Although Molloy did not stop the hunts, he did offer some good news for the environmental groups about a broader issue in the still-ongoing lawsuit to restore Endangered Species Act (ESA) status to wolves. It’s likely that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service violated the law when it summarily removed ESA protections for wolves in the Northern Rockies, he wrote. The agency did so in piecemeal fashion, delisting wolves in Montana and Idaho while keeping them federally protected in Wyoming, where state officials . . .

Palestinians Out, Jews In
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  8-4-2009
After receiving eviction notices last May, three Palestinian families constituting 53 people, including 20 children, were forcibly removed from their homes under High Court order at dawn on August 2. This is just one of several plans by various real estate groups such as Nahalat Shimon International and American businessmen such as Irving Moskowitz, to populate the areas surrounding the Old City with Jewish strongholds that sever Palestinian territorial contiguity in East Jerusalem. This prejudices any final resolution in which East Jerusalem would be the Palestinian capital. It is also in clear breach of Israel’s commitment under the Road Map. But these operations are backed by the Israel Lands Administration, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Israeli government, who are all working together to undermine any possibility for a two-state solution and are blatantly infringing on the basic human rights of the residents of what they deem to be the “united Jerusalem.”

Canoe Fire Whitewashing Unsavory
GlennFrancoSimmons

After my post critical of the Canoe Fire, prompted by my interviews of officials when I was an editor, the federal government REMOVED the PDF report on the fire but left up the HTML and then said its Web server was down, despite the HTML being available and all other PDFs on that server being available. If my criticisms are so wrong, why remove the document?

Gov't Failure Kills Ancient Redwoods
GlennFrancoSimmons
by GlennFrancoSimmons  8-3-2009
Don't buy the government's lies about the fire being good for the redwoods. This was a high-intensity destructive fire, and although the forest will recover, it will be nearly 2,000 years before the trees are fully "replaced," assuming climate change and/or other factors, like more fires, do not destroy the rest of the redwoods.

Global Cooling Wrecking Tourism In NE
merrie
by merrie  7-12-2009    2
From an unfazed Associated Press The tourism season is young, so there are few statistics indicating how it’s going. In Maine, those that are available point to a rough start. In June, traffic was down 3 percent on the Maine Turnpike, and day use at state parks was down by nearly a third. There’s no sugarcoating the bitter pill in a state where "Vacationland" is on the license plates and tourism is the biggest industry, pumping $10 billion into the economy. Vaughn Stinson, chief executive officer of the Maine Tourism Association, put the damage at millions of dollars in Maine alone. "When you have just day after day after day of that, it just really dampens " no pun intended " everyone’s enthusiasm," Stinson said. It’s certainly bad for businesses that had to close. Story Land in Conway, N.H., and Funtown Splashtown USA in Saco are among those that closed briefly. Under sunny skies, Friday marked only the seventh day in two weeks that Aquabaggon news.yahoo.com
