CBO Says Dems Are Using Accounting Trick To Claim Medicare "Savings"
merrie
by merrie  12-24-2009
It's a little disappointing, really. At the rate that Democratic politicians were generating ever-more-spectacular budget savings from the same old set of health care proposals, I had expected our looming fiscal problems to be permanently resolved by this time next week. From TheAtlantic - shaping the national debate on the most critical issues of our times, from politics, business, and the economy, to technology, arts, and culture. A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe

In a TV interview, the President added: “Unlike similar epidemics in other countries, three causes of serious viral infections came together simultaneously in Ukraine – two seasonal flus and the Californian flu “Virologists conclude that this combination of infections may produce an even more aggressive new virus as a result of mutation.” Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been touring hospitals where victims are being treated and presidential elections in January could be cancelled . Four men and one woman have died from the flu in Lviv, said emergency hospital chief doctor Myron Borysevych. Two of the dead patients were in the 22-35 age group, with two others over 60. He diagnosed the disease as viral pneumonia. Russia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Romania, countries that border Ukraine, have already launched health checks on Ukrainians entering their territory. SEIU Needs Socialized Medicine To Stoke Its Underfunded Pensions

and union employees at the expense of the rank-and-file. To regain some semblance of fiscal stability, the SEIU has wagered heavily on forcing other employees to help fund its drying pension reserves. That was the motivation behind the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) ("Card Check"), a major Democrat initiative for 2009, and one on which the SEIU spent tens of millions of its members' money. Since Card Check is in serious trouble with lawmakers, state-run health care would be a suitable alternative. • The public option could force hospital and other health care workers into underfunded pensions, putting their retirements at risk • The average union pension has resources to cover only 62% of what is owed to participants • Less than one in every 160 union-represented workers is covered by a union pension with required assets • The PBGC already supports upwards of 30,000 pension plans • Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation (PBGC), the governmental pension insurer,

Are New Orleans residents perpetual victims?
tonybierman
by tonybierman  10-16-2009
At some point, aren't we all going to have to stop looking upon New Orleans' residents as perpetual victims of a natural disaster that occurred over four years ago? So far, the US has spent billions of dollars in aid and committed significant resources to the crescent city. It is becoming a bottomless pit. A rabbit hole. In stark contrast, observe how the thousands of eastern Iowa flood victims have handled their own natural disaster since 2006. You do not hear about Iowa because most Iowans are not culturally inclined to assuming the role of lifelong victims. The indigenous population of New Orleans, on the other hand, seems both intent and destined to remain forever wards of the state. At some point, New Orleans constituents will need to look inward and ask themselves whether they have any responsibility in their own recovery.

Nurses in Washington State file lawsuit against forced "swine flu" jab
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  10-6-2009    2
"MultiCare’s unilateral implementation of this policy blatantly ignores their legal obligation to bargain with the union," said Barbara Frye, the association's assistant executive director of labor relations. "Their refusal to bargain and to cease and desist forced us to take this extraordinary measure to seek relief from federal court," she said. The union said MultiCare’s proposed plan would require unvaccinated nurses to wear a surgical mask at all times while on duty even though there is a lack of research showing that masks actually prevent flu transmission. http://www.komonews.com/news/local/63144732.html

Is Britain's Health-Care System Really That Bad?
JackieDel
by JackieDel  9-28-2009    2
How does NHS health care compare with U.S. health care? Like most developed countries, Britain ranks above the U.S. in most health measurements. Its citizens have a longer life expectancy and lower infant mortality, and the country has more acute-care hospital beds per capita and fewer deaths related to surgical or medical mishaps. Britain achieves these results while spending proportionally less on health care than the U.S. — about $2,500 per person in Britain, compared with $6,000 in the U.S. For these reasons, the World Health Organization (WHO) ranked Britain 18th in a global league table of health-care systems (the U.S. was ranked 37th). However, there are measures by which the U.S. outperforms Britain: for instance, the U.S. has lower cancer mortality rates.

George Bush, and his neo-con cabal (the folks who believed the parades would last, even after the random raids and the abuductions started) insisted that First: Every citizen has the right to health care. The State shall maintain public health and provide the means of prevention and treatment by building different types of hospitals and health institutions. Second: Individuals and entities have the right to build hospitals, clinics,or private health care centers under the supervision of the State, and this shall be regulated by law. But here, in the wealthiest nation on the planet, with (we are assured) the "best healthcare in the world,"people die from the flu, because they can

To Err is Human: Institute of Medicine report on reducing preventable medical errors
Lexica
by Lexica  9-16-2009
Sadly, it's now 10 years after its release, and most of its recommendations have not been heeded. More: To Err Is Human asserts that the problem is not bad people in health care--it is that good people are working in bad systems that need to be made safer. Comprehensive and straightforward, this book offers a clear prescription for raising the level of patient safety in American health care. It also explains how patients themselves can influence the quality of care that they receive once they check into the hospital. This book will be vitally important to federal, state, and local health policy makers and regulators, health professional licensing officials, hospital administrators, medical educators and students, health caregivers, health journalists, patient advocates--as well as patients themselves.

I'm glad they voted yes. $1.1 billion in federal, state and local government funds are spent annually on health care for undocumented immigrants aged 18 to 64. That amounts to an average $11 in taxes for each U.S. household. In contrast a total of $88 billion in government funds were spent on health care for all non-elderly adults in 2000

Get Ready for Detroit-Style Labor Relations in our Hospitals

by merrie  9-10-2009    1
The current House version of ObamaCare (H.R. 3200) goes much further. Section 225(A) grants Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius tremendous discretionary authority to regulate health-care workers "under the public health insurance option." Monopoly bargaining and compulsory union dues may quickly become a required standard resulting in potentially hundreds of thousands of doctors and nurses across the country being forced into unions. Ms. Sebelius will be taking her marching orders from the numerous union officials who are guaranteed seats on the various federal panels (such as the personal care panel mentioned above) charged with recommending health-care policies. Big Labor will play a central role in directing federal health-care policy affecting hundreds of thousands of doctors, surgeons and nurses. Consider Kaiser Permanente, the giant, managed-care organization that has since 1997 proudly touted its labor-management "partnership"

Read the Union Health-Care Label
billpar
by billpar  9-10-2009
There's more. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus has suggested that the federal government could pay for health-care reform by taxing American workers' existing health-care benefits—but he would exempt union-negotiated health-care plans. Under Mr. Baucus's scheme, the government could impose costs of up to $20,000 per employee on nonunion businesses already struggling to afford health care plans. Mr. Baucus's proposal would give union officials another tool to pressure employers into turning over their employees to Big Labor. Rather than provide the lavish benefits required by Obamacare, employers could allow a union to come in and negotiate less costly benefits than would otherwise be required. Such plans could be continuously exempted. ObamaCare is a Trojan Horse for more forced unionization.

Guaranteed Health Care in Iraq – But Not for U.S.
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-9-2009    4
According to the American political right-wing, government-guaranteed health care is good for Iraqis, but not good for us. They decry even a limited public option for us, but gleefully imposed upon the Iraqis what they label here as "socialism," with much Democratic Party member support. We have (thus far) sacrificed more blood to wrest Iraq from tyranny than we lost on 9/11. And, the total money spent in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is more than the funding required to guarantee minimally decent health care for U.S. citizens. The most senior members of the Republican establishment - and some Democrats like Max Baucus (D-MT) - have gladly spent more taxpayer funds to ensure health care as a Constitutional right in Iraq than they are willing to spend to give us any level of guaranteed coverage. Can someone please explain why our government favors the health care of Iraqis over its own citizens?

Why a hospital is a bad place to have to make decisions
Lexica
by Lexica  8-24-2009
More: You're standing at the chaotic hub of the hospital floor, with people being as helpful as they can -- really and truly -- while they are also dealing with the usual countless crises and being short staffed. It's an uncomfortable space.… And, every minute or two, there's this guy in some room somewhere, screaming for help which he may or may not desperately need, which may or may not be possible to give him -- but which isn't coming any time soon. And every human being in earshot, including you, is ignoring this. You aren't even wondering why no one is helping the poor guy. After all, he's not the one guy in the hospital you've come to see. You're used to it by now -- the screaming, the beeping, the feeling like you're in the middle of Grand Central Station at rush hour. Human beings can get used to anything. Anything. But, that doesn't mean it doesn't affect us.

Fire threat empties Athens suburb

Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers - backed by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft dropping water - are battling the fires but they are too numerous and widespread to contain. "The situation is tragic. Fires are out of control on many fronts," said a regional Athens governor, Yiannis Sgouros. more than 30,000 acres of land had been burnt in what he described as "an ecological disaster". Many residents of the threatened towns and suburbs have fled by car, motorbike and on foot, but others have stayed behind to try to defend their homes. Two children's hospitals, a summer camp and a psychiatric clinic have been evacuated.

New website shows low-income Californians how to reduce medical costs
Lexica
by Lexica  8-20-2009    1
More: Since the country’s first Hospital Fair Pricing Act took effect more than two years ago—Assembly Bill 774––California hospitals are required to offer fee discounts and are also capped on what they charge patients who typically face their highest fees: the uninsured.… many hospitals have complied with California law—“Some are doing it well, some are not”—but two nagging problems continue. First, rural hospitals, or those not affiliated with large chains, frequently don’t mention the mandated discounts. Second, obtaining the discounts can be difficult. The Web site was created “not to bash hospitals,” but to offer patients their options under the law.… For patients, medical bills are causing rising debt loads and even medical bankruptcy. Consumers who buy catastrophic health-insurance plans and limited “junk” insurance often find that their plans have strict limitations, which often saddle them with enormous debt….

Whose Medical Decisions? by Thomas Sowell

Nowhere? Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel is "Special Advisor for Health Policy" for the Obama administration. That's nowhere? He is also co-author of an article on Americans' "over-utilization" of medical care in the June 18, 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Is that nowhere? Dr. Emanuel's article points out that Americans do not visit doctors or go into hospitals more than people in other industrialized countries. In fact we go to both places less often than people do in those other countries, which include countries with government-controlled medical care. As the article points out, "It is more costly care, rather than high volume, that accounts for higher expenditures in the United States." There are more Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices per capita in the United State . . . Americans also have more of what the article calls "amenities" with their medical care. "Hospital rooms in the United States offer more privacy, comfort and auxiliary service

This "model" (as opposed to "conspiracy") is worthy of note and investigation. That being one in where, over an extended period of time - decades - directing, maneuvering, forcing, ruling, regulating, as well as both blocking AND allowing any practices and procedures by insurance companies, medical doctors, hospitals, whether pro-big insurer or against, whether large or small, no matter to whom it may have seemed to be a favorable move for or against, anything that would eventually limit individual citizens options and create the merging and consolidation without reasoned oversight, allowing courtroom decisions, etc. so that we come to where Americans' options have been narrowed and whittled down to having to be at the mercy of the demon insurers. And when it gets bad enough, and tough enough for enough people, then the salvation must come from their rescue health plan ~ and THEIR PLAN ONLY!

China Performs 13 Million Abortions Yearly
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-2-2009    5
China imposed strict birth controls in the 1970s, limiting most couples to just one child. Sterilization and the use of intrauterine devices, or IUDs, for women are widely promoted — and subsidized — forms of contraception for married women. However, the policy tends to overlook the contraception needs of unmarried women even as attitudes toward casual sex have dramatically liberalized. Seems sex education in schools should become a priority.
