POPSUS to House Diplomats in Iran, Oil Prices Drop This is the real reason oil prices dropped sharply today, when this news broke overseas, 5 hours ahead of US time. NBC Nightly News tonight had it right (video here) in interview with economist who said oil prices have included an "Iran premium" due to war rhetoric from US and Israel. Immediately the price fell when it looks like diplomacy might open up a bit.

POPSKarl Rove Believes He Is Above The Law Emotionally, I believe this man deserves the "harsh interrogation" our government believes is "OK". Rationally, he should be subpoenaed and if he fails to honor that legal move arrested and tried. Frankly, I see him as a terrorist of a stripe equal to that of any foreign nationals we have identified as such.

POPSBritish and American diplomats in roadside standoff with Zimbabwe police "McGee climbed onto the hood of the car while his aide snatched the keys from the ignition, then the diplomats used their mobile phone cameras to take photographs of the officer. The confrontation was "a message to us, to try to control what we are doing," said U.S. Embassy spokesman Paul Engelstad, who was among around 50 diplomats and journalists on the tour. Japanese, EU, Dutch and Tanzanian envoys and an Associated Press reporter were also in the convoy. McGee noted the government has denied repeated reports from opposition officials and human rights groups of government-orchestrated violence against the opposition. "The government has said, 'Present us with proof.' I think today we have done just that. "We do have concrete proof of what is happening in the countryside and the government will have to listen," Mr McGee said."

POPSal-Sadr ... Negotiating from Iran Sadr continues to play the political/religious card to his advantage... Forcing the government to deal with his (illegal) organization/militias will simply empower him in the eyes of the populace

POPSMcDonald's Drops 'Hammurderer' Character From Advertising "We are sensitive to the concerns of parents and will immediately begin phasing out this character," Perlich said. "Whether we will remove him from commercials without explanation or write him out of the spots with a bloody police standoff, we have yet to decide. But we're confident the Hammurderer will be off the national radar by April."

POPSThere's no winner in a flawed Elections
The biggest losers are always the voters. The potential of the computer ballot is a frightening prospect. No hard copy. Those results will remain as they stand, because 'Computers can't make mistakes' Only people, like programmers and politicians. Does anyone know how long it takes to find all of the bugs in a program? Sometimes they aren't found until it's too late, if at all. The greatest assurances that regard Free and Fair elections are from politicians who have the most to gain. Besides which, if the Bill of Rights and Constitution can become obsolete with the stroke of a pen, it becomes clear that a vote has little value. Elections seem like a great way to let politicians blame the public for their actions 'Well the voters asked for it' Politics is organized crime, with any politicians that are honorable being far outnumbered by those with no scruples. While Abraham Lincoln said "You can't fool all of the people All if the Time", in politics you only need to fool 51%

POPS Report: Chinese Ships Confronted USS Kitty Hawk Adm. Timothy Keating, who heads the U.S. Pacific Command, is in Beijing this week to discuss what he has called China’s “perplexing” refusals, its worrisome weapons programs and U.S.-China military ties. Beijing claims Taiwan as its own, vowing to attack the self-ruled island if it moves to formalize its de facto independence. The U.S., Taiwan’s chief security benefactor, is legally obligated to help defend the island in the face of Chinese saber-rattling.

POPSUS vs. Iran - Part II (Iran airs contrasting footage of US navy standoff) I'm actually starting to lean towards Iran's version here... This actually does sound rather fishy. Like my comment on yesterday's story, I just don't see how Iran would benefit froma confrontation with the US. The "peace talks" IMO, will do no real good. So any mischief here would nierther add to the process or take away from them in the long run. If anything it would hurt Iran, not help them. Ie: it makes no sense that they would pull this kind of move. Plus the voice just sounds too "fake" to be what an Iranian wouls say... granted, I don't know that many Iranians :P

POPS"Man Of The Year" And Master Of The Universe Belkovsky - who published a book about Putin's finances last year, and who is the director of the National Strategic Institute, a Moscow thinktank - claims he is confident of his assessment of Putin's hidden wealth. "It's not a secret among the elites",he said. Belkovsky adds that the west has misunderstood Putin and has been distracted by his "neo-Soviet" image. Putin, Belkovsky claims, is ultimately a "classic" businessman who believes money can solve any problem. In an interview on Wednesday with Time magazine, which named Putin its person of the year, the president vehemently denied that those inside the Kremlin were corrupt. Asked whether "some of the people closest to you are getting rich", Putin said: "Then you know who and how. Write to us, to the foreign ministry, if you are so confident. I presume you know the names, you know the systems and the tools.

POPSI'd Rather Rent With the cost of home networks and high-def TVs plummeting, I don't think too many people are interested in "owning" digital copies of movies, and many people no longer want to collect hard copies of movies (DVDs) either. People won't pay extra for digital, they merely want to pay a few bucks to watch a wide selection of movies (in HD!) on demand through a set-top box or device that's connected to the Internet. Rent, not own.

POPSFormer commander in Iraq backs withdrawal bill “The improvements in security produced by the courage and blood of our troops have not been matched by a willingness on the part of Iraqi leaders to make the hard choices necessary to bring peace to their country,” Sanchez said in remarks to be aired Saturday for the weekly Democratic radio address. “There is no evidence that the Iraqis will choose to do so in the near future or that we have an ability to force that result,” he said. Sanchez added that the House bill “makes the proper preparation of our deploying troops a priority and requires the type of shift in their mission that will allow their numbers to be reduced substantially.” Critical assessments on the war from former Pentagon brass are nothing new. But Sanchez’s newfound alliance with Democrats is particularly noteworthy because he was directly in charge of combat operations in Iraq, from 2003 to 2004.
