Stem cells could allow 'blood farms'
pokkets
by pokkets  Yesterday 6:45 PM    1
One of the issues recently has been the shelf life of blood, where the rotation principle-first in first out can leave blood 'stale' and unsafe. There is also the fact that the contributions cannot meet the demand, and the increase in surgery that requires large volumes of blood. Transplant, and heart surgery being prime examples. They have been searching for a means of producing blood artificially, but the prospect of using stem cells, makes it more likely to be a reality. One of the most important aspects is that the red cells have no nucleus, so no nucleic DNA. A fact that can relieve many ethical, and practical problems.

Know about the humidity range when greenhouse gardening. If the humidity in the greenhouse goes above 80%, you will encourage mold not just on your plants but the greenhouse itself.

Old donated blood a risk after surgery.
pokkets
by pokkets  3-20-2008
Blood has an official 'shelf life' of 6 weeks. The tendency to use old blood first to rotate stocks would mean that much of the blood used would be over the two week limit said to be dangerous. Blood can't be frozen or the red blood cells burst. Huge volumes are used in transplant and heart surgery that have been much more common over the last few years. Much of the blood used in these cases ends up on the floor. If a blood bank supply reaches the two week limit, supplies are said to be critically low. There needs to be a redevelopment of the practice of blood supply and distribution, Perhaps with alternatives to whole blood and the types surgery being considered. 'Keyhole' heart surgery is one option that has that saves the need for huge transfusions, and patient stress. Something I considerd as a comparison. How long can pasteurized, homogenized milk be kept in the fridge before it goes sour ?

What have they done to our beef?
brotherhug
by brotherhug  1-28-2008
Industrial agriculture has transformed our meats into a product that is often hazardous to humans. The inhumane treatment of animals, the force feeding of foods that are not part of the animals' diet, the overcrowding, etc. have created unhealthy animals which in turn make us unhealthy. The result is cheap food, lots of cheap food, cheap hamburgers, cheap toxic food that we pay for with our health.

Google to compete with Wikipedia?
ericskiff
by ericskiff  12-17-2007
Very interesting. By highlighting the author of an article, or "knol", there's a clear and compelling reason to contribute articles of value. Google's internal Knol likely creates a meritocracy, where it's important and valuable to be the person who wrote the authoritative knol on a specific technical topic. Compared with Wikipedia, where most contributions are fueled by a altruistic need to create or improve articles, I can see the motives for this, but it also seems as though this would create lots of stale pages, jockeying for 'authoritative' position, and generally stifle collaboration. Interesting - but I don't think it's a wikipedia killer.

Republicans Trot Out Same Tired Lies
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  10-7-2007
Predictably, the Republicans rehash their own brand of swill by lying to the faithful in Atlanta. Using the bludgeon of fear they resort to the same stale rhetoric that has worked for them in the past. The same rhetoric that the rest of the country is beginning to see as manipulative and hypocritical.

"Exkluzívny párik"
ondro
by ondro  9-15-2007
