Wherever We Go
gjwcpa
by gjwcpa  6-26-2008
"We brought the welcome mat... We don't claim any know-how... God help us, we just love our job" Wherever we go, bluebirds sing And the flowers bloom And the grass gets green It's a curious thing But it's just our thing Wherever we go, the bees behave In the treetops, squirrels smile and wave It's a curious thing And it's humbling Where we go, little glow-worms glow Little roadrunners run ahead Gonna tell their friends Little mice, little men Get'em all excited All invited Chorus: Hands up Holler back here Let's throw this party in gear We brought the welcome mat Wherever we go, that's where the party's at Hands up Holler back now We don't claim any know-how We're giving God all that Wherever we go, that's where the party's at Wherever we go, the dumb get wise And the crime rates drop And the markets rise It's a curious thing But it's just our thing Bullies make nice, crooks repent And the ozone layer shows improvement It's a curious thin

The Careful Art of Listening
Socratoad
by Socratoad  6-23-2008    2
"The rush of shifting wind through treetops. The gurgle of stream water tumbling over stone. The hmmmm and bzzzzz of insects. The piercing call of a faraway bird. These are only a few of the sounds of the living forest. Some are constant; others fleeting. But all are components in a symphony that is not merely unfinished but perpetual, playing night and day. It is a work ever-in-progress worth listening to, carefully. Nature’s sounds not only soothe our civilized souls, but also tell tales of their makers’ lives."

Rocky The Robo-Squirrel
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  5-13-2008    3
an ornithologist with Cornell University, was able to talk to a parrot through speakers hidden in a bush. The parrot was later seen encouraging other parrots to follow a set of commandments. At Indiana University, researchers were even able to build a robot that could successfully challenge male lizards to push up contests. Can complete control of the reptile psyche be far behind? “Whether it's a bunch of squirrels in a field or humans in a mall, there are general principles of behavior that seem to hold up across species lines,” said Greg Demas, director of Indiana University's Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior. This indicates just one eventual outcome of this line of research: creating robots that can successfully challenge humans to push up contests.

Indian Giant Squirrel
mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-17-2008    4
The Indian giant squirrel, Ratufa indica, is a large-bodied diurnal, arboreal, and herbivorous squirrel found in South Asia. Also called the Malabar giant squirrel, the species is endemic to deciduous, mixed deciduous, and moist evergreen forests of peninsular India, reaching as far north as the Satpura hill range of Madhya Pradesh. The Indian giant squirrel is an upper-canopy dwelling species, which rarely leaves the trees, and requires "tall profusely branched trees for the construction of nests." It travels from tree to tree with jumps of up to 6m (c.20ft). When in danger, the creature often freezes or flattens itself against the tree trunk, instead of fleeing. Its main predators are birds of prey and leopards.
