Translating human feelings into computer data.

Such tools could help companies pinpoint the effect of specific issues on customer perceptions, helping them respond with appropriate marketing and public relations strategies. For casual Web surfers, simpler incarnations of sentiment analysis are sprouting up in the form of lightweight tools like Tweetfeel, Twendz and Twitrratr. These sites allow users to take the pulse of Twitter users about particular topics. A quick search on Tweetfeel, for example, reveals that 77 percent of recent tweeters liked the movie “Julie & Julia.” But the same search on Twitrratr reveals a few misfires. The site assigned a negative score to a tweet reading “julie and julia was truly delightful!!” That same message ended with “we all felt very hungry afterwards” " and the system took the word “hungry” to indicate a negative sentiment. While the more advanced algorithms used by Scout Labs, Jodange and Newssift employ advanced analytics to avoid such pitfalls, none of these serv

Pelosi's Swastika Carrying Plants Are Sprouting
merrie
by merrie  8-13-2009    1
Don't believe me. Ask this guy who made a living posing as an ashamed Republican. The media couldn't stop falling for his shtick... Update: First, I was wrong, the sign in question is in the batch of 133, it's easy to overlook, but visible here. Second, our lefty friends want to claim that this is somehow proof that I had it all wrong. I didn't have anything wrong. At the time of Pelosi's statement that picture was unknown to everyone, me, the Huffington Post, everyone at Daily Kos, and even to Pelosi herself. It was only revealed after I proved that Pelosi's information wasn't coming from it's natural sources, the netroots and all its denisons. The sign itself (lame as it may be) generated zero notice, and wasn't noted in press accounts or netroot accounts. More importantly the photo in question wasn't from a townhall meeting, it was from a street demonstration - there was no townhall meeting that day. In that regard it rates a FAIL as proof that Pelosi was right.

Lifting the Lid on America's Biowarfare Research
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-30-2009    6
Reporting guidelines are so lax that dangerous pathogens such as hantavirus, SARS and dengue fever "are not on the select agent list" nor are there requirements "that the theft, loss or release of these agents ... be reported to Federal officials." More recently, Global Security Newswire reported in June that an inventory at USAMRIID at Fort Detrick, Md., "found nearly 10,000 more vials of potentially lethal pathogens than were known to be stored at the site." The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine was so-alarmed by the prospect that in 2003 they commented, "the possibility for genetic engineering and aerosol transmission suggests an enormous potential for bioterrorism." Unsaid, of course, was the gravest threat posed by such dark research may be state terrorism. Any one of these pathogens should they escape or made to "disappear," could be transformed into a doomsday weapon.

If you are a puppet-on-a-string assiduously following every law to the letter, enthusiastically nodding in agreement to everything the government tells you, patriotically turning in your neighbors for every infraction of the law (both written and social), then you have nothing to worry about. Many Americans, Republican and Democrat, have grown tired of the direction in which this country is headed. The once occasional lapse in ethics has become common place, greed and irresponsibility by our financial institutions are being rewarded in the form of ‘bailout’ tax dollars, citizens have to watch what we say and do and how we do it, self-interest has supplanted “doing what is right for this country”, special interest groups are favored over national security and welfare, food safety has been jeopardized in favor of profit. Civil unrest is brewing and FEMA detention centers are sprouting up across the nation. http://www.mindfully.org/Reform/2004/FEMA-Concentration-Camps3sep04.htm

Sec. of State Clinton Criticises Israel
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  3-4-2009    5
My, my...the times are changing. For The Better. The more truth that struggles out from the Middle East the more abhorrent it's reality is revealed. In this case, for example, the oppression is disguised by something as simple as building permits, and the ability to get them or not. In the other profound changes of the new Obama Administration there has been some incredible swift deflation of hot air and hardline opinions. Without the control of Congress or the White House, without the ability to get the media to your doorsteps with the snap of a finger, and without the ability to keep the skeletons hidden in the closet the facade of the Bush Era is quickly crumbling. What was impossible to say or think a mere two months ago now seems like plain and simple common sense. The idea that individuals would be held accountable and punished was previously not on the agenda, now demands for it are sprouting up everywhere. And this clip: Criticize Israel - No More Blind

Antibiotics given to Animals Ends Up in Fresh and Canned Vegitables
nedhamson1

Bummer! There's just no getting away from facts that industrialized animal farming has bad effects on people, and the planet. When there were thousands of small farmers, instead of hundreds of mega-industrialized farms animals did not get so stressed and disease prone. Forget if you are a vegan, it still gets to you. Let's hear it for going back to small farms!

New Discovery Could Rejuvenate the Brain
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  12-18-2008
“If we can target therapies that block this mechanism, then neurons should be able to sprout new connections, therefore stimulating the brain’s ability to repair its wiring network.” The research reveals that the loss of plasticity is due to the protein calpain actively blocking the protein cortactin, which is responsible for the sprouting of new connections. The researchers reduced calpain activity in animal models to unlock the sprouting potential of neurons and found that when calpain activity is reduced neural plasticity is enhanced.

To have that taken away would make them feel like they were being deprived of one sense." -- Simon Baron-Cohen, synesthesia researcher at the University of Cambridge

Sprouting from an Acorn
willhelm
by willhelm  10-13-2008    2
Editorial writers from Little Rock to Buffalo condemned ACORN's action as an affront to both civility and freedom of speech. Editorialists also pointed out that the "spending cuts" the protesters railed against were imaginary - Gingrich proposed merely to slow the growth in some welfare programs and turn control back to the states. Yet ACORN had only just begun. Two days later, 50 to 100 of the same protesters hit their main target - a House Banking subcommittee considering changes to the Community Reinvestment Act, a law that allows groups like ACORN to force banks into making high-risk loans to low-credit customers. The CRA's ostensible purpose is to prevent banks from discriminating against minorities. But Rep. Marge Roukema (R-NJ), who chaired the subcommittee, was worried that charges of discrimination had become an excuse for lowering credit standards. She warned that new, Democrat-proposed CRA regulations could amount to an illegal quota system.
