POPSZheng Gu Shui Our acupuncturist pronounces it "Zen Goo Shway". Similar to Ben-gay and other topical liniments, Team LexiMonkey always keeps a couple of bottles of this stuff on hand. our local Vietnamese grocery carries it, Excellent for aches and pains and bruises. There are stories of fighters breaking an arm, soaking the arm in ZGS, taping it up, and going on to win the match. Our acupuncturist discounts the literal interpretation of that story, but this is really great stuff.

POPSData-mining medical records could predict domestic violence
More: Using the new system, the researchers were able to predict abuse an average of two years before the doctor made the diagnosis. Presumably, the computer is picking up signs of ongoing maltreatment the patient hasn’t yet revealed. The researchers also speculate that, in principle, some subtle signal could precede direct abuse. One surprise finding that could be relevant… is that infections turned out to be strongly linked to abuse. That might suggest worsening hygiene in the family or increased psychological stress, possible omens of abuse. But at this point, it is anybody’s guess whether true predictions are possible. Predictions or not, with the current model, fewer than 20 percent of the patients flagged as high-risk cases turned out to have a diagnosis of abuse. Part of the problem may be that the system is only as good as the data it was based on. And as Emory University’s Houry points out, that data isn’t up to speed when it comes to diagnosing abuse.

POPSHow to fix bad ankles More: Why should balance training prevent ankle sprains? The reasons are both obvious and quite subtle. Until recently, clinicians thought that ankle sprains were primarily a matter of overstretched, traumatized ligaments. Tape or brace the joint, relieve pressure on the sore tissue, and a person should heal fully, they thought. But that approach ignored the role of the central nervous system, which is intimately tied in to every joint. “There are neural receptors in ligaments,” says Jay Hertel, an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of Virginia and an expert on the ankle. When you damage the ligament, “you damage the neuro-receptors as well. Your brain no longer receives reliable signals” from the ankle about how your ankle and foot are positioned in relation to the ground. Your proprioception — your sense of your body’s position in space — is impaired. You’re less stable and more prone to falling over and re-injuring yourself.

POPSPosture Makes Perfect: Correcting postural misalignments helps ease chronic pain
More: Back, neck and shoulder pain frequently occur when the body tries to compensate for weak or underused muscles. “Lower back pain is the most common complaint from new clients… vertigo…TMJ (jaw pain), rotator cuff problems and neck, shoulder, knee and foot pain.” He adds that while many patients are at first skeptical as to the relationship between posture and, say, jaw pain, they often feel relief after just one session. After a thorough postural evaluation from an Egoscue therapist, the client receives a “menu,” or series of exercises and stretches called E-cises. While the specific exercises often do not appear directly related to the pain site—for example, thigh strengtheners and/or an upper back stretch may be prescribed for lower back pain—they are based on the muscles that are currently moving improperly. Muscles that may be compensating or substituting for other muscles now return to performing their proper roles, which in turn relieves the pain.

POPSHerbal Medicine Favourites There are a few staple herbal remedies in my medicine cabinet & this is one I can't do without. It's amazing for healing sprains & increases the rapidity of the healing of bruising. I lent a pot (blended with peppermint & hypercium) to a friend of mine who works in an area where there are frequent injuries & the medical powers that be were so impressed they've started using it on a regular basis

POPSHealthcare Overspending Doesn't Mean GOOD Healthcare Personal story: My mother, in a nursing home, was sent to the hospital without my being notified. The nursing home reported to the hospital that she was complaining of "chest pain", neglecting to inform the hospital that she has had a serious fall and struck her head only a few days proir to that. Before I could find out that she had been admitted, the hospital had completed over $20,000 worth of cardiac tests on her (which her health insurance would pay for) for NO REASON. After I found out she was hospitalized and got a chance to speak to her doctor, he performed a simple x-ray and an MRI and found that she had sprains and strains in her chest and spine related to her fall. The doctor was the one who ordered the cardiac testing with no cardiac complaints other than "chest pain". WASTE!!!
