Amazonian Tribe Doesn't Have Words for Numbers
einbar
by einbar  12-19-2008    2
A previous—and contested—study of the Pirahã had reported that they used the words hói, hòi, and baágiso to represent “one,” “two,” and “many,” respectively. But Gibson’s tests revealed that the Pirahã actually used these words in a more relative way to mean “few,” “some,” and “more.” In some instances hói was used for quantities as large as six, and sometimes hòi—a similar but separate word—was used for quantities between four and ten. “None of the three words that the Pirahã produced were used consistently to refer to any particular quantity,” the researchers reported

Deciphering the Cell's Other Code
Moonowler
by Moonowler  7-8-2007
Histone proteins control DNA by forming spools around which DNA winds. Modifications to the histone tails can force the DNA to wind tighter, making it inaccessible, or loosen it, making that piece of DNA available for translation. Since each histone tail can carry multiple modifications, some scientists have suggested that different combinations of modifications might constitute a "code" that directs how DNA is accessed by the cell.

Scientists Find a Second Code Hidden in DNA
Kore7
by Kore7  7-26-2006    19
How cool is this? A secondary DNA meta-code has been discovered superimposed on top of the same "genetic code" whose transcription it influences! (Douglas Hofstadter would have had a field day with this!) Highly efficient from an information science point of view. There are so many wonders to be discovered within our very selves!
