Why is a U.S. Army brigade being assigned to the "Homeland"?

by ratilfar  9-24-2008    6
Cont.... The 1st BCT's soldiers also will learn how to use "the first ever nonlethal package that the Army has fielded," 1st BCT commander Col. Roger Cloutier said, referring to crowd and traffic control equipment and nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals without killing them. "It's a new modular package of nonlethal capabilities that they're fielding. They've been using pieces of it in Iraq, but this is the first time that these modules were consolidated and this package fielded, and because of this mission we’re undertaking we were the first to get it." The package includes equipment to stand up a hasty road block; spike strips for slowing, stopping or controlling traffic; shields and batons; and, beanbag bullets.

The $600 Million Bridge to Somewhere (Wasilla), Palin Supports
blueridge
by blueridge  9-17-2008
The "bridge to nowhere" got lots of attention, while this one is getting a pass. Now is this 'ear-marked' and 'pork-barrel spending' too, or not? It is Palin's home town, so likely that is why she supports it. Amazing what is justified when self-interest takes hold, isn't it? Wasilla is not "nowhere", for it boasts 7,000 residents.

Spike in Jobless Rate for Women Worst in 33 Years
dulios
by dulios  9-16-2008    2
Kay Carey of Chicago is living that very scenario. An administrative assistant for a state social-services contractor, Carey was laid off in July when her department was phased out. She got the bad news after returning from vacation and only two weeks after moving into a new home. "I've never been laid off before. I go to work when I'm sick. I go to work when I'm tired, so it's kind of hard for me, but I haven't broken," she said. "I'm trying to learn not to get up every morning at 5:45." Her daughter recently had to drop her classes at Tennessee State University because she's $3,000 short on her tuition and Carey couldn't get a loan to make up the difference. "It's really hard when you have a child that wants to go to school, but can't," she said.

The Really Very Problematic "Pickens Plan"
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008    7
sources that T. Boone Pickens rails about in the context of oil. In its most recent annual outlook, the U.S. Department of Energy projects that the U.S. natural-gas market will become more integrated with natural-gas markets worldwide as the U.S. becomes more dependent on imported liquefied natural gas -- causing greater uncertainty in future U.S. natural-gas prices. The natural-gas supply problem will be additionally magnified if significant greenhouse-gas regulation is enacted. Here's how: Currently, when natural gas gets too expensive, electric utilities often substitute coal or cheaper fuels for power generation. Under a greenhouse-gas regulation scheme, however, inexpensive coal might no longer be an alternative because of the significantly greater greenhouse-gas emissions involved with its combustion. Utilities, and ultimately consumers, could easily find themselves at the mercy of natural-gas barons -- like T. Boone Pickens himself, a large investor in natural gas

Black bear attacked man-in-boat

"...another fisherman showed up with a gaff and joined in the fight. The bear kept hold of its victim by his shoulder. Two other men showed up armed with a knife and ball- peen hammer. "This bear was getting hit between the eyes with the hammer and it didn't flinch," Miller said. Another man then arrived with a fishing knife and began stabbing the bear in the neck. "He didn't let go until he was dead," Miller said."

Prickly Blonde
abailart
by abailart  9-10-2008    1
Normal-colour hedgehogs produce blondes only if both parents carry the blonde gene. As inbreeding occurred within the captive population, the rare gene was passed on. “The two types interbreed but have differing characteristics. The brown ones tend to be more tenacious and aggressive, while blondes are more placid and amenable to handling.“ said Alderney Resident and Hedgehog carer Barbara Head.

US Teen Suicide Rate Rising
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  9-3-2008    1
Take away the meds from kids and this is what happens. Yet the reason for keeping kids away from psychiatric medication persists however absurd it might be. And the reasons are absurd. If a teenager had a malfunctioning liver, only religious weirdos would say to keep the child off the medication. But when a child's brain malfunctions and there is is a medication that can help, many people cry foul and become suspicious. Why? We are only talking about organs of the body. Just as yellowing skin can be a symptom of a malfunctioning liver, so depression can be a symptom of a malfunctioning brain. The meds can save lives.

What's Up With Black Names, Anyway?
dulios
by dulios  8-25-2008    1
The name Kizzy, which belonged to a "Roots" character, skyrocketed from oblivion to become the 17th most popular name for black girls in Illinois in 1977. Islam began in these years to have a clear influence, too, most visibly with Cassius Clay adopting the name Muhammad Ali in 1964. Others followed suit, including two fellows named Lew Alcindor and LeRoi Jones, whom you know as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Amiri Baraka. Around this time, an American boy named Barack Hussein Obama would be born. His given names, of Semitic origin, mean "blessed" and "good." Soon, out of these more political traditions grew a new one of creating names whose sounds the parents merely found pleasing. So the next time you are tempted to ridicule a name of any color -- black, white, red, celebrity, whatever -- it would be generous, and prudent, to do a bit of research.

Bernie Mac, Comedian Dies at Age 50
merrie
by merrie  8-9-2008
–and poor people who were the shoe repairmen, pressers of trousers, low level factory workers who ran through long spates of lay-off after lay-off, waitresses, short order cooks, maids, housecleaners, laundry takers-inners, and people who had no jobs… they lived in tiny one-story houses or duplexes with the back porch often boarded over to make a second bedroom. The last is the layer Bernie Mac came from. He was raised by his mother, Mary, who died when he was sixteen. Bernie Mac was an orphan who made his way in the world. And his comedy reflected the envy and longing and love of the layers of Black people on his home turf… he loved nothing more than to make fun of arrogance and haughtiness, and had a sharp eye for the facial expressions and gestures of humans ‘acting up,’ He mimed those gestures perfectly. He was a ‘body’ comedian therefore, not only a spoken word comedian.
