Sperm Whale Classified Carbon Neutral
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  10-29-2009
Prior analysis of whale carbon dioxide emissions attributes 25 percent of carbon dioxide emissions total to the animals in the Southern Ocean region. Subsequent computation lowers the whales’ carbon dioxide emissions estimate to 0.3 percent, which is equivalent to 17 million tons of carbon a year. Lavery and team explain that there are low levels of iron in the Southern Ocean, and the sperm whales each contribute about 10 grams of iron to the surface. Since the iron comes from the whales’ waste material, it takes the form of liquid plumes, effectively acting as a fertilizer and encouraging growth of plankton. Depending on the exact values and environmental conditions, sperm whales can then be classified “either a net carbon sink or as carbon-neutral,” Discovery writes.

Protect against toxic chemicals
kareval
by kareval  10-28-2009    1
I am shocked and deeply disturbed that the law that is supposed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic chemicals is so outdated that China is allowed to export toxic materials into the United States that are not only banned in Japan and Europe, but can't even be used domestically in China. Every American alive today, including newborn babies, has hundreds of chemicals flowing through their blood. Many of these chemicals are linked to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, heart disease, lowered sperm counts, early puberty and other diseases and disorders. Yet, of the 82,000 chemicals available for use in the U.S., only about 200 have been required to be tested for safety. And the EPA has succeeded in banning only one group of chemicals, PCBs, from the marketplace. It's time to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). I urge you to support legislation that will: view more 1. Take immediate action to stop the use of the most dangerous toxic chemicals; 2. Give

Ig Nobel prize: Fertile strippers make more money; Coke kills sperm

What some people consider to be serious research. Sigh. Some lap dancers have scheduled shifts based on this research. About the Coke thing, the professor of obstetrics and gynecology does not recommend using Coke for birth control or to cure babies of colic, toughen your pooches paw pads, dissolve the rust off your car’s bumper or quench your thirst. It does make good Mentos rockets, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKoB0MHVBvM

Super Sperm
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-14-2009
more (at source): The researcher said: 'Sometimes, during the fine-tuning process, high rates of infertility can be seen. That's probably the reason for the very high rates of unexplained infertility in the last decades.' Dr Hasson, of Tel Aviv University in Israel, says women's bodies have gradually evolved extra 'defences' to force sperm to become more competitive to reach the egg at all. Men have responded by making more of the aggressive super-sperm. Once the first sperm fertilises an egg, a woman's body throws up a further range of biochemical defences to stop all the others reaching it. Dr Hasson said: 'To avoid the fatal consequences of polyspermy, female reproductive tracts have evolved to become formidable barriers to sperm.

Internet Plagiarism Cops
onlinedesign
by onlinedesign  9-10-2009
I remember the first time I deliberately plagiarized a paper for school. In the pre-Internet 5th grade I copied word for word out of the World Book Encyclopedia and turned it in as a report on Abraham Lincoln. I did not get caught and I have felt guilty ever since. Looking back (way back), I think the reason I copied the content instead of doing the creative work myself is because the subject was just flat out boring. I had Lincoln overload. "Teach me about something I don't already know...already," I thought. When I did it, I KNEW it was wrong. See, "back then" we had a larger sense of social conscience. Wrong was wrong, not "if you get caught it's wrong." My daughter is a full time college student. We spend many hours a week on the phone together "doing homework" and writing papers together. I listen and make suggestions and my daughter researches until her keyboard fingers are numb. When the paper is finished we run it through the "plagiarism checker" online.
