"Sir David, 83, said: "I was contacted by the team shortly after the discovery and they asked if they could name it after me. I was delighted and told them, 'Thank you very much'. "I'm absolutely flattered. This is a remarkable species the largest of its kind. I'm told it can catch rats then eat them with its digestive enzymes. It's certainly capable of that."" Telegraph.co.uk

Giant Cloud Of Marijuana Smoke Discovered In Space
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-20-2009    1
Other astronomers with a religious outlook, see something else. They believe God exhaled the smoke after creating the Universe. When God rested on the seventh day, He probably lit up a trillion joints. This theory would answer many theological issues. Further analysis of the marijuana cloud indicates the cloud is rotating. Astronomers now think the cloud will collapse on itself and form stars and planets in the distant future. One day, an extra-terrestrial species of beings made from marijuana smoke could evolve to answer all the questions of the Universe.

Book: Bats Sing, Mice Giggle
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-19-2009
more (at source): Among the recent discoveries outlined in their book, Bats Sing, Mice Giggle, is research that elephants are capable of detecting seismic vibrations through the bones in their feet and nerves in their trunks. By producing low frequency rumbles in their calls, elephants can communicate through the ground over hundreds of miles. Researchers studying bats have also found that certain bats produce songs as well as the chirps they use for echolocation and hunting. The false vampire bat, or Megaderma lyra, uses distinctive social calls that sound like songs when recorded and played back at a slower speed, to attract female mates while the sac-winged bat, Saccopteryx bilineata, uses songs to mark out its territory.

New species discovered in Greater Mekong
ofcapri
by ofcapri  4-2-2009    1
Discovering new species all the time! Among the most bizarre to be discovered was a hot-pink, spiny dragon millipede, Desmoxytes purpurosea.. The millipedes have glands that produce cyanide to protect them from predators. Scientists believe that the shocking-pink colouration is a warning that they would make a fatal snack. "They would do well to heed this warning," concluded a WWF report on the Greater Mekong discoveries.

Dawrin: Unfinished Business
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  2-6-2009    1
Since Darwin’s birth, the natural world has changed beyond recognition. Then, the modern theory of atoms was scarcely six years old and the Earth was thought to be 6,000. There was no inkling of the size of the universe beyond the Milky Way, and radioactivity, relativity and quantum theory were unimaginable. Yet of all the discoveries of 19th- and early 20th-century science—invisible atoms, infinite space, the inconstancy of time and the mutability of matter—only evolution has failed to find general acceptance outside the scientific world. Few laymen would claim they did not believe Einstein. Yet many seem proud not to believe Darwin. Even for those who do accept his line of thought his ideas often seem as difficult today as they were 150 years ago.

Early fish experienced 'digital' evolution
pokkets
by pokkets  9-22-2008
Regarding the development of 'fingers'. The first development seemed to be to 'strengthen' fins, and became 'fingers' as environmental and physical conditions provoked the optimum chance of their development. There is a statement in the clip that should remembered whenever considering 'Scientific Discoveries' : " Previous research, it turns out, had simply overlooked what was there. " Every minute other discoveries show us that we can miss so many factors..until our minds are ready to see them.

Scientists map Neanderthal maternal DNA

38,000 years wasn't that long ago. They became extinct shortly afterward (as far as we know) after dwindling around Western Europe. It's easy to wonder what may have happened if they were isolated in an area that was free of Homo sapiens sapiens (So smart that we have to repeat it to ourselves to remove any doubt.)

How Darwin won the evolution race
Socratoad
by Socratoad  6-22-2008    3
Thoughts of money or women might have filled lesser heads. Alfred Russel Wallace was made of different stuff, however. He began thinking about disease and famine; about how they kept human populations in check; and about recent discoveries indicating that the earth's age was vast. How might these waves of death, repeated over aeons, influence the make-up of different species, he wondered?
