Inspirational Story -Blind and Crippled, but NOT Disabled -
murieleileen
by murieleileen  5-26-2009    1
Patrick Henry Hughes was born with a rare genetic disorder that left him without eyes and physically disabled. But he was also blessed with exceptional musical talent—able to play the piano as a toddler and now, at age 19, a nationally known pianist, singer, and trumpeter who has performed at the Grand Ole Opry and the Kennedy Center. Currently hes a member of his college marching band, playing while his devoted father pushes him in his wheelchair. With determined optimism and courage, Hughes has made I am potential his mantra and defied the impossible at every turn.

Fight Special Interests That Want To Take Your Money
merrie
by merrie  2-7-2009    2
Last week, the trillion dollar, unprecedented explosion in federal spending misleadingly called a "stimulus" package passed a vote in the House, but all the House Republicans and 11 House Democrats stood up to Nancy Pelosi and voted 'no' to bigger government, more debt, and more wasteful programs. The bill needs 60 votes to pass in the Senate. We have the public on our side, and with enough grassroots pressure we'll win!

Do children have their own timeclocks of progress
boozich
by boozich  1-13-2009    3
Many parents have been ill-informed about their childs developmental delays only to find that the child improves greatly with interaction with their own peers over time. It is the old case of square pegs do not fit round holes. I know many parents have been told their child is Autistic - it freaked them out and has damaged husb and wife relations...placed kids in special needs centres. I know our son has grown up at his own pace. Maybe our society relies too heavily on "developmental landmarks" set by the pro's and we don't give the kids enough time to develop at their own pace

Private schools and special ed
rvnurse2b
by rvnurse2b  12-4-2008
this is puzzling to me also. In my state, homeschools are considered private schools, and so if the school district has an obligation to bring services to us in the case of special education...how come so many of us have to PAY for those services and then go to another school to get them? not that I would necessarily want them to bring their services to us.. Homeschooling is an ideal environment for special education, and I don't think that as many homeschooled kids will require it from another source.

In Election 2008, Don't Underestimate This Voting Block
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2008    2
He’s used to picking up the tab, whether it’s the company Christmas party, three sets of braces, three college educations or a beautiful wedding. He believes the Constitution is to be interpreted literally, not as a “living document” open to the whims and vagaries of a panel of judges who have never worked an honest day in their lives. The Angry White Man owns firearms, and he’s willing to pick up a gun to defend his home and his country. He is willing to lay down his life to defend the freedom and safety of others, and the thought of killing someone who needs killing really doesn’t bother him. The Angry White Man is not a metrosexual, a homosexual or a victim. Nobody like him drowned in Hurricane Katrina — he got his people together and got the hell out, then went back in to rescue those too helpless and stupid to help themselves, often as a police officer, a National Guard soldier or a volunteer firefighter.

Palin only supports abstinence to be taught in sex-ed!" This claim is usually followed by a super classy comment about her daughter and the use of contraception, but the premise is false. Palin hasn't said she doesn't want condoms discussed in sex-ed, calling their discussion "relatively benign." "I'm pro-contraception, and I think kids who may not hear about it at home should hear about it in other avenues. So I am not anti-contraception. But, yeah, abstinence is another alternative that should be discussed with kids. I don't have a problem with that," Palin said. Hers is hardly an extreme point of view in America today. "If she cares about children with special needs, then why did she cut spending on them by 62 percent?" Actually, Palin almost tripled their funding in only three years from $26,900 per student to $73,840 per student. Incidentally, the amount of government money you spend on a specific group doesn't equal the amount you care for that group, but that's an

Sarah Palin - Politics More Important Then Children
moonspirit4ever
by moonspirit4ever  9-1-2008
I was shocked when Sarah Palin accepted the Republican VP nomination. While I am a staunch believe in a woman's ability to do anything, we also have to be realistic about the needs of our children. First, I was appalled that a) Ms. Palin got on an 8 hour plane ride AFTER she started leaking amniotic fluid. That was totally irresponsible. I don't care WHAT medical resources were available on that plane, a plane is no substitute for a hospital with a neo-natal unit. Ms. Palin already knew that she was having a special needs baby - I find it incomprehensible that she would be so reckless as to take such a foolish risk. Second, Trig is less then six months old and has Down Syndrome. The time parents spend with a child during infancy is crucial to the child's development, and even more so with a child that has challenges. While Ms. Palin probably could give Trig adequate nurturing and do her job as Governor, now since she is also running for VP, there will be NO time for thi

PowerMall Debate
Imnclady
by Imnclady  8-23-2008
So, my dear friend, forgive me for not heeding your word of warning. Because you see, my family comes first, what kind of person would I be, if I gave my "time" to strangers, when "my family" are the one's needing my "time". I am not selfish and do not want anyone to suffer, I do what I can, for whom I can, whenever the need arises. I will continue to show my concern, and be of help. I will also continue to find the right people who believe that "together, "we can" make a difference in the world we live in". Even if our world only reaches as far as our own back yard...it makes no difference to "Him"..., just as long as we do something.....
