POPSWatching TV http://rockmusic.suite101.com/article.cfm/martyrdom_of_a_yellow_rose_as_a_student_protest From one comment made regarding this song: "She's not fictional. In fact, you can hear her speak on the track. 2. It's not so much about HER as it is about you and me watching her and then going down to Applebees for the $7.99 steak sizzler or stopping off at Starbucks for a latte. He is ridiculing US for our lack of action in the face of reality. " (alienanthropologist, Silver Spring, MD)

POPSEmpire State Building Lit For Chi-Coms Draws Protesters Lhadon Tethong, executive director of Students for a Free Tibet, called the lighting "outright, blatant approval for a communist totalitarian system." "It’s a great public relations coup for the Chinese state," Tethong said as tourists gawked at the protesters. "But on the other hand, it’s sure to backfire because the American public and the global public will speak against it." At the lobby ceremony, building manager Joseph Bellina called the lights a high honor and said he was proud of the relationship between "our countries and our people." Chinese Consul General Peng Keyu, who pulled the switch on the glass-encased model, said he was "honored and delighted." He said China’s reforms of the past 30 years have led to greater openness and "tremendous change." Keyu and Bellina didn’t address critics and declined to answer questions… Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican, said it was "a sad day for New York."

POPSImages of Abandoned Cities I've always had a fascination with ghost towns of the Old West. There's a rustic, old-world charm about the history they hold. But, there are similar forces at work today. It's hard to see sometimes, because it seems like there are so many people ... everywhere you turn. But it is happening in some places. What's really interesting is seeing images of what these places look like now that they are being discarded. And, even wilder is that some of these will be destroyed to make way for new, more modern improvements. Check out the city in China, for example, just the character of the buildings speak of history. And yet ... they will be gone soon to welcome advancement. But will anyone want to come back? And what makes them come back?

POPSObama to Release Uighur Gitmo Terrorists In Washington DC Their release is seen as a crucial step to plans, announced by President Obama during his first week in office, to close the prison and relocate the detainees. Administration officials also believe that settling some of them in American communities will set an example, helping to persuade other nations to accept Guantanamo detainees too... Officials have not said where in the United States they might live. But many Uighur immigrants from China live in Washington's Virginia suburbs, and advocates have urged that the detainees be resettled near people who speak their language and are familiar with their customs.

POPSElectricity Grid in U.S. Penetrated By Spies "These are pure speculations," said Yevgeniy Khorishko, a spokesman at the Russian Embassy. Wang Baodong, said the Chinese government "resolutely oppose any crime, including hacking, that destroys the Internet or computer network" and has laws barring the practice. Utilities are reluctant to speak about the dangers. "Much of what we've done, we can't talk about," said Ray Dotter, a spokesman at PJM Interconnection LLC, which coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in 13 states and the District of Columbia. He said the organization has beefed up its security, in conformance with federal standards. Specialists at the U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a nonprofit research institute, said attack programs search for openings in a network, much as a thief tests locks on doors. Once inside, these programs and their human controllers can acquire the same access and powers as a systems administrator.

POPSMajor Banks Supporting Corrupt Regimes Barclays helped oil-rich Equatorial Guinea long after clear evidence emerged ruling family were looting state oil revenues. Hong Kong bank helped Republic of Congo ruling family spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in oil revenues on designer shopping sprees. Citibank facilitated the funding of two vicious civil wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia by enabling the warlord Charles Taylor, now on trial for war crimes in the Hague, to loot timber revenues. Deutsche Bank assisted the late president Niyazov of Turkmenistan, a notorious human rights abuser, to keep billions of dollars of state gas revenues under his personal control and off the national budget. Dozens of British, European and Chinese banks have ignored laws and used loopholes to aid criminal and atrocious acts of human rights violations, money-laundering and theft. We speak out against crimes agains the poor while the rich are aided by banks to carry out their crimes. Disgusting.

POPS Obama And Frank: A Farwell To Arms Caucus for Priorities is a campaign of Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its mission is to “change U.S. budget priorities to reflect a national commitment to education, healthcare, energy independence, job training and deficit reduction — at no additional taxpayer expense — by eliminating funding for unneeded Cold War-era weapons systems.” That will certainly deter a rearming and expansionist Russia, an ambitious China and a dangerous Iran. If Obama wins, the “obsolete Cold War weapons” to be done away with, to Russian and Chinese glee, include the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter and the F/A-22 Raptor to replace our aging F-15s, the wings of which are literally falling off. The Raptor can fly to and from Iranian nuclear facilities undetected should the need arise, as it very well may at some point.

POPSBeijing Olympics Not So "Dazzling" Last week, Bush met with several Chinese dissidents in Washington, signalling that he would take a hard line on human rights. That sparked a harsh response from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, which said that Bush had "rudely interfered in China's internal affairs."
