Winter Bird Feeding
Socratoad
by Socratoad  11-28-2009    5
Provide cover. Birds need shelter from harsh conditions, and vegetation in your yard will help to furnish it. Don’t prune back dead vegetation like vines and stalks – these provide both valuable winter cover and nesting material for birds in the spring. Balconies have a special opportunity to attract nesting birds as they provide great shelter. Add habitat in your backyard in the form of a brush pile, which may attract foraging birds and mammals, and even over-wintering reptiles, amphibians and insects.

Sexy? plain? who chooses?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-24-2008    2
"In women, preferences for male faces, voices, body odors and behavior change over the course of the menstrual cycle as estrogen levels rise and fall. Our work with these songbirds shows a possible neural basis for those changes" Put aside the specific hormone, what is pointed here is how much happens in the background of one's perception, that has control of what is perceived as very real.... and the 'changes' that we experience must be doubted.

Tens Of Millions Of Birds Disappearing Across North America
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-30-2007    5
I think this is happening all over the world, with all different kinds of animals and at an alarming rate. Where I live, there used to be flocks of thousands of sparrows every year. Not any more. Now, I'm lucky to see flocks of a hundred, usually the groups are in their tens only. The frog song has disappeared here too. It's so sad. Too quiet. :( The video wouldn't clip, so go to the source.

Adult songbirds map out a way home
pokkets
by pokkets  11-5-2007    2
The study suggests that a bird's ability to navigate, is learned, or acquired, rather than inherited. They're still working to identify exactly how this is learned, but may be as simple as getting the 'feel' of a location, either through sun position, magnetic field or both,. It could also be a mechanism that we have yet to be able to clearly understand. Still, nature has a way of solving a problem as simply as possible, but like cryptic puzzles, they can seem perfectly simple, but only after we've worked out the answer.

Millions of Missing Birds, Vanishing in Plain Sight
gingembre
by gingembre  6-30-2007    1
"In our everyday economic behavior, we seem determined to discover whether we can live alone on earth. E.O. Wilson has argued eloquently and persuasively that we cannot, that who we are depends as much on the richness and diversity of the biological life around us as it does on any inherent quality in our genes. Environmentalists of every stripe argue that we must somehow begin to correlate our economic behavior — by which I mean every aspect of it: production, consumption, habitation — with the welfare of other species. This is the premise of sustainability. But the very foundation of our economic interests is self-interest, and in the survival of other species we see way too little self to care. We look around us, expecting the rest of the world’s occupants to adapt to the changes that we have caused, when, in fact, we have the right to expect adaptation only from ourselves."
