25%+ of all Pentagon money is unaccounted for
papananook
by papananook  8-10-2008    4
Why Bush & Co. love war. Little known fact: George Herbert Walker, grandfather of George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr, besides being a major financier to the Nazis along with his son-in-law Prescott Bush, was also appointed supervisor of military contracts by Woodrow Wilson. Interestingly enough, it's much easier to find out details of the family's dealings with the Nazis than it is to uncover the simple, biographical fact that the Bush dynasty has been hardwired into the finances of the Pentagon since Day One. Ripping off the nation via the Pentagon is a four generation old business for this crew. No wonder they're so good at it. 9/11 helped then both cover their tracks and take things to a new level. Wow, that's a pretty good scam for some people...I wonder where all that tax money goes? It's bad enough how they rip us off legally, let alone down the rabbit hole to...?

Who Picked China for the Olympics?
suckmyclip
by suckmyclip  8-8-2008
According to the AP, “earlier this year, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said it had disrupted two plots to attack the Olympics. It claimed one group had been planning to kidnap athletes, foreign journalists, and other visitors, while a second had been manufacturing explosives and was plotting to attack hotels, government offices, and military targets in Shanghai, Beijing, and other cities….” Just yesterday we heard about sixteen Chinese policemen who were killed in an attack on a border post in the Muslim region of Xinjiang.

You're Not Getting Your Old Dog Back
cmstratton
by cmstratton  8-5-2008
This story highlights what I think is one of the more common misconceptions about cloning. It sounds like the woman in this article feels like she's getting her old dog Booger back. While it's true she's getting an exact genetic replica of Booger, he could end up being very different than the original. Much of Boogers personality and capabilities were the result not only of his genetic make-up, but of his life experience. There's no way to exactly duplicate that experience, so it's very likely the cloned Boogers will be somewhat if not very different than the original. This could be true for some of his physical characteristics as well, as some of them are influenced by life's experiences. While I believe cloning can hold great promise, people need to realize it can't be used to bring a dead loved one back to life.

Nearly 70 equine athletes in the Olympic Equestrian Events have landed in Hong Kong, stepping off their flights and being whisked by first-class transport to spacious and cool accommodations in Sha Tin. The cosmopolitan horses represent 18 nations, including Belgium, Finland, Mexico, Italy, Japan, Sweden, France, South Korea, Russia, Canada, and Germany. In all, around 220 horses competing for 42 nations are traveling on more than 50 airplanes to get to the Games in Hong Kong.

Multilateralism Comes With A Price
merrie
by merrie  7-26-2008
We must work with our allies, but we also must recognize that multilateralism comes with a price. Coalitions can dilute effectiveness. The European concept of multilateralism is Washington's obeisance to European positions. Western Europe exists in a bubble of stability and affluence, unable to fathom how dangerous extremist ideology in Tehran and Pyongyang can be. Multilateral organizations are not the answer; at best, they are ineffective soap boxes, at worst cesspools of venality. Rose petals and well-digging have never stopped bombs, racism or genocide. A strong military has. Obama says, "Let us remember this history." Let us hope he first learns it. Leadership is about more than rhetoric.

Put A Stop To Cut-Rate Gas: International Monetary Fund
merrie
by merrie  7-3-2008    1
Governments that try to create a false economy for oil are not revealing the truth to their people. About half of humanity, from India to Chile, now benefits from cut-rate petroleum prices. In 2008, these countries will account for all the growth in world oil demand, or an additional one million barrels a day, according to Deutsche Bank. Their consumption will be the highest in eight years. In China, oil demand is estimated to rise 5 to 10 percent this year, but the government has resisted calls to end price controls. A few other countries – Chile and South Korea – are now moving toward subsidies to appease political pressures. In Congress, bills to combat global warming would raise costs for oil users, even possibly adding a dollar to gasoline prices. But proposals by lawmakers to relieve those costs with subsidies to consumers would only defeat the purpose of reducing oil demand.
