Life in Color: Orange

A balance of playful yellow and passionate red, orange commands attention without overwhelming. This often flamboyant color brings to mind citrus and sunsets, fall leaves, and jack-o'-lanterns. Orange has even been found to stimulate appetite and creativity in humans.

The Real Columbus Story.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  10-12-2009    1
I learned awhile back what a ruthless cruel man Christopher Columbus was. He was no hero but the history books continue to paint him that way. Why? Is it because the Christopher Columbus myth has taken a life of its own and cannot be dispelled? Human beings love fantasy. We love to be lifted, if only for a short period, out of our humdrum lives. We also love answers, even if most of the answers we are given by historians don't hold water, we will still cling to them. It makes me wonder that maybe in the not so far off future when we are all trying to survive the Global Warming Effects, history books will claim that the George W Bush era helped save our planet by getting rid of billions of poor people so that the wealthiest will have a better chance at survival. All the rich kids will read about their savior "W" while they bask in the sun at the seashores of South Dakota and Kansas on their George W Bush day off. No different from today.

Global Warming Legislation Effect on States
merrie
by merrie  10-10-2009    1
The preceding is a list of the 50 state-by-state breakouts of the impact the bill would have on jobs and the economy. Lieberman-Warner (S.2191) relies heavily on an unproven technology, capturing carbon and sequestering it. Even with the most generous assumptions " presuming that carbon capture and sequestration is commercially developed in 10 years " the economic costs for the average American are staggering. Under a more realistic scenario, the economic impacts in terms of losses in the job market, losses in household budgets, and higher energy prices will be drastically higher. To make matters worse, there will be inconsequential effects on the environment to show for it, if any. The Senate's leading climate-change bill, while aiming to combat global warming by reducing carbon dioxide in the air, actually poses "extraordinary perils" for Americans and the economy, according to a new study from The Heritage Foundation.

Map of Every McDonalds’s in the Country
disenchantedcitizen

I just finished reading ‘Don’t Eat This Book’ by Morgan Spurlock (the guy who did Supersize Me http://freedocumentaries.org/film.php?id=98 ) . I will NEVER eat fast food again. It is truly scary what food processors do to our food and what they do to it again to make it palatable. Of course, McDonalds tries to down play Spurlock’s ‘prank’ by criticizing that he ate 5,000 calories per day and did not exercise. The problem with that logic is that there are people who do the same thing. According to Eric Schlosser, author of Fast Food nation, his research indicates that in 2001 there were about 30,000 McDonalds and says they open about 2,000 a year. So that means there are probably more like 47,000 McDonalds today.in the U.S.

There are many people that will always take the minimum of what is required in order to save them added cost. In the state of Florida, it is required that everyone that owns their own transportation must obtain insurance for said vehicle. Provided they have a valid Florida license plate of course. Now, the minimum cost for coverage is ten thousand dollars for bodily injury to one person, twenty thousand dollars to all bodily injuries involved, and ten thousand dollars for property damage.

At an early age, however, the boy distinguished himself as a leader. On his first hunt at the age of 10, Jumping Badger killed his first buffalo. He gave the meat away to elders who were unable to hunt for themselves. Following the hunt, Jumping Badger set out on his first vision quest. When the lad was just 14, his father gave him a coup stick, a slender wand with which he could gain prestige by touching or striking an enemy in battle. He joined his first war party against the Crow, anxious for a chance to prove himself at that tender age. Rest of article at source...good read

Life is bare bones on the Lakota reservation
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-14-2009
By John King CNN Chief National Correspondent ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "All it is is logs, glue -- dirt and water put together -- then cement and the chicken string," Hale says of his home. "Long as the windows don't break, it's nice and warm in here." The roof leaks a bit, and the floorboards are rotted in one corner, but Hale isn't one to complain. "It's home," he says, almost under his breath, as he invites a visitor to have a look. Firewood is stacked in one corner inside, and more outside as Hale uses the summer months to stockpile for prairie winters, where 20 below zero is not all that uncommon. He also pulls bunches of long weeds in the prairie grass, to dry for use as a firestarter. "I have to be careful," Hale says matter-of-factly as he pulls a few fistfuls. "Sometimes there are some snakes. Rattlesnakes. Nothing to mess around with." ~~~~~~~~~~~ This makes me cry. It is their country!!!!
