POPSCold Weather Stalls Windpower in Minnesota Another example of what happens when the ALL KNOWING Government decides they have a better idea. All 20 of the newly installed wind-turbines which were supposed to help reduce fossil fuel energy production has failed to produce any electricity. Sounds like the government full of hot air and accomplishing absolutely nothing but wasting taxpayer money. So this weeks DODO bird award goes to the officials of Minnesota who actually thought up this lame brain idea. This one certainly has flown over the Cuckoo's nest.

POPSSooner or later Katie, the Pay Czar cometh CBS is denying that Couric is going to get a pay cut and they say they are really happy with her performance. This sounds very hollow to me. When you read about how deep the layoffs were and realize the fact that Couric has not been able to budge CBS out of last place, you have to conclude that her $14 million salary isn’t going to last forever.

POPSSpray-on miracle could revolutionise manufacturing more (at source): The secret of liquid glass is that it forms an ultra-thin film between 15 and 30 molecules thick – about 500 times thinner than human hair. On this nanoscale – a few millionths of a millimetre thick – liquid glass turns into a highly flexible invisible barrier that repels water, dirt and bacteria, yet is resistant to heat, acids and UV radiation but remains "breathable". A family-owned German company called Nanopool holds patent rights on the technology behind the liquid glass, which emerged from research at the Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken. Nanopool is already talking to British firms and the NHS about using the product for a diverse range of applications, from coating designer handbags to spraying the nose cones of high-speed trains. Got to source to read more proposed uses of the substance

POPSMr. Freeze: Why Obama’s Latest Budget Change Won’t Put His Agenda On Ice
Obama's "Freeze" By Philip Klein President Obama is set to announce a three-year "freeze" in non-security discretionary spending during his State of the Union as part of his efforts to convince independents that he cares about reducing the deficit. I say "freeze" in quotes, because some programs will go up, while some will go down -- thus providing the Obama administration wiggle room to say that Obama isn't reversing his position on an across the board freeze of the kind that he criticized John McCain for during the campaign. "An across-the-board spending freeze is a hatchet and we do need a scalpel because there are some programs that don't work at all," he said (video here). My position is, yes, this is mainly a symbolic gesture -- after all, the White House claims it would save $250 billion -- less than a third of the cost of the economic stimulus bill alone. It's only a temporary, three-year freeze that follows years of unprecedented spending and it comes as ....

POPSDisappearing Silence and Why We Need It During the years I lived in the wilderness preserve I would regularly hear the sounds of our machines, even there, in the remoteness ...the grinding roar. Audio ecologists warn us about negative effects of sound pollution. I noticed how the forest dwellers used silence as part of their signal system, how sound itself directs behavior within the ecosystem, when its gone, what happens to them? And what does our grind mean to them?

POPSIt's the Deficit, Stupid A closer look at this diet reveals that the freeze would apply to a budget that enjoyed a 20 percent increase in 2009, courtesy of the Democrats' largesse. Under the guise of "tacking to the center" in the wake of his trip to the woodshed in the Massachusetts election, the president's proposal would actually lock in a sizable spending increase during those years, as opposed to a real freeze. (No wonder Republicans burst out laughing during the SOTU.)
