POPSDanish Cartoonist Attacked OMG!!! This is awful! What we need to do now, is PANIC! We need to fear all foreigners! We need a "Homeland Security" Department! We need to give up all our rights and freedoms to be able to eradicate these evil-doers!! Why can't WE have a Patriot Act?!? Something needs to be done!! Al Qaeda are gonna chop all our heads off!! Waaaah!! . Oh... wait a minute. We Danes are not as easily spooked as some and we kinda like our freedom of speech and civil rights, etc. Maybe we should just let law enforcement handle this. Yeah, I suppose a more calm, collected and sane approach would be better. .:) http://bit.ly/5CFMjr

POPSAlleged Underwear Bomber: 'it was a mix-up in the laundry' Abdulmutallab comes from a prosperous Nigerian banking family, who live on $12 a day, four times the national average. Family members are used to having maids and other servants do the laundry in exchange for roots and berries. 'My underwear goes out, my underwear comes back', Abdulmutallab said. 'My cousin, his nephew, and his other brother and other nephew were all staying at the house. One of them was probably going to blow up a public urinal or a pay phone or something, and I got the explosive underwear by accident.' While investigations continue, Abdulmutallab is complaining about his nick-names. 'Some are calling me 'the Underbomber', 'Suicide Fart', or 'Lightning Pants', he said. 'Some even call me 'Fizzle Dick'. These prison names are awful. But at least the inmates keep away from me in the showers. I even dropped my bar of soap several times without incident.'

POPSSacramento-area farmers grow heirloom wheat
More: Sonora wheat was once one of the most popular wheat varieties grown in one of the biggest wheat states in America—California. In fact, Sonora wheat from California was considered of such high quality that most of it was exported to England. The change to hammermill processing, and the corresponding change to wheat types that grow well in Midwestern conditions, were a factor in the demise of California wheat farming. Midwestern wheat is generally higher in phytates, which are bitter to the taste, which was an issue for Fox. “I hated whole wheat. It was bitter and awful, and I really preferred spelt. But I went crazy for this wheat,” she says. Fox promptly began growing Sonora wheat for seed, and just eight years later, she estimates that there are at least 15 farmers in the greater Sacramento area growing this variety, including Full Belly Farm, which offers flour from Sonora wheat at farmers’ markets and through their community-supported agriculture boxes.

POPSThe Something Awful/Paypal fiasco
More: I'm not going to tell people to close their Paypal accounts. I'm not going to say all their actions were completely unwarranted. I'm just presenting my experience with them and will allow you to draw your own conclusions. However, I harbor a fundamental disagreement with their business practice of assuming all their clients are filthy criminals who must repeatedly prove their innocence to a series of unmanned servers and computer systems. I do not support their ability to freeze entire accounts, take money from whoever they want at whatever time they want, and impose whatever arbitrary rules and regulations they deem necessary without having to answer to any organization. Every single cent in every single Paypal account is earning their company ungodly amounts of interest in their central bank account. They offer users credit cards and the chance to put your money into interest-generating accounts. So exactly why are they not under banking and FDIC rules again?

I had gotten a loan through my bank before and it was an awful process. They made everything confused, and it seemed like they wanted me to mess up. Now since they made that process so awful my credit dropped and then the next time they denied. So I came to Williams Title Loans. They were upfront with everything and drew out the entire loan process for me. All that was left was to dot my “I’s” and cross my “t’s”. I really appreciate how they do business.” Lindsay M.

POPSYou Could go to Prison For Most Of This Advice Dear Bloggess, My boss never stops complaining. She's always coming over to my desk to interrupt me when I'm working to tell me about her headache, or her infected foot, or her sore neck, or a rash she has on her back. It's never ending. I can't get anything done, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up stabbing her for being so irritating. What to do? ~ Jen Next time your boss comes to complain say “Oh my God, that’s so hot” and when she’s all “Um…what?” say “I kind of have a fetish for sick people. Please..tell me more about your rash”. And when she does, roll your eyes back in your head with pleasure and then start writing shit down and when she asks about it just tell her you’re writing down all her symptoms for “later” when you’re alone and wink at her. Then ask if you can have a few minutes to yourself and shut the door. Then come out again and ask if you can see the rash. She’ll probably never talk to you again.

POPSJust what is 'annualism'? Many would argue that there is nothing wrong with a journalist putting themselves at the centre of the story. What binds all the "annualist" titles together is that while their "year-long ordeal" might be classified as a stunt, they have serious things to say about their subject matter and its importance to society. And there is a long and honourable history of "stunt" journalism. It goes all the way back to Nellie Bly, the pioneering American journalist. In 1887 she infiltrated an asylum by pretending to be mentally ill in order to investigate conditions there. Her expose, Ten Days in a Mad-House, outlined the grim conditions, rotten food, and beatings that constituted the life of patients. Ultimately, we are impressed by feats of endurance. For many readers, it adds authenticity to an act of criticism. For many of the authors of course, one "annualist" work is enough. "It would be really nice to do something that doesn't involve the words 'I', 'me' or 'my''.

POPSWow! What's to say? These gals are great! It must take an awful lot of time and effort to train for this. I've always admired the yogis and the contortionists for their talents.

POPSShort Stories in Eight Easy Rules by Kurt Vonnegut Posted in '07 by MonkeyKnifeFight, MOG user. Rule 6 is almost too apt. Rule 8 is debatable, though Vonnegut doesn't say you have to give readers correct information, just as much information as possible. For more clues as to how to convince your readers to look the wrong way at just the right moment, consult J.K. Rowling. :)

POPSBitterness as Mental Illness? More: "Embittered people are typically good people who have worked hard at something important, such as a job, relationship or activity, Linden says. When something unexpectedly awful happens -- they don't get the promotion, their spouse files for divorce or they fail to make the Olympic team -- a profound sense of injustice overtakes them. Instead of dealing with the loss with the help of family and friends, they cannot let go of the feeling of being victimized. Almost immediately after the traumatic event, they become angry, pessimistic, aggressive, hopeless haters. Linden suggests that people once known as loving, normal individuals who suddenly snap and kill their family and themselves may have post-traumatic embitterment syndrome. That's reason enough for researchers to study how to treat the destructive emotion of bitterness."

POPSWhat Will They Come Up With Next??? I LOVE Snopes.com...If you get an email that is just too weird, too good to be true, just too awful...it's usually bogus. Every once in a while, something is actually true, or a mixture of truth and lies. Snopes checks them out and tells the truth. It's a fun site just to play around on when nothing else catches your interest. Enjoy.

POPSThe Gift That Keeps on Giving Aside from the great entertainment that the Palin Circus has given us, we should all be grateful that she will not be on the podium in Washington today.

POPSShock! Pope Benedict Misrepresented By Media "It is necessary to have something like an ecology of man, understood in the right sense. It is not outdated metaphysics when the Church speaks of the nature of the human being as man and woman, and asks that this natural order be respected." From reading the articles linked above, you'd think that the Holy Father had just off the top of his head said, "Merry Christmas! And by the way, all you gay people are going to Hell." In none of the articles linked above will you find a single reasoned response to the metaphysical and ontological arguments presented in the Pope's address. All you will find is foamy-mouthed crotch-liberation theology. Is there such a thing as the ideal setting for sexuality as created by God? It's awful hard to deny. And it's not homophobic to say so.

POPSThe true school scandal The public school my G-children go to is the best in our county and fortunately it's only 2 blocks away. Of course, it's only elementary school and the standards are pretty high and for the most part, the teachers are motivated. There's a lot of wasted hours of PC trash and I wish there was a stronger policy of discipline in the school. But still, given the choice and the $$, I'd opt for private school in a heartbeat.

POPS War On Terror ~ OKAY!!! In my mind, Al-Qaeda has made a horrible misstep – for instead of claiming victory as the Republican Party is vanquished due to Bush-Hitler`s misdeeds, they chose to make an enemy of a man who, by all accounts, is simply adorable. They`ve done the worst thing possible: They not only kicked a puppy - they kicked our puppy. And for that, they`re in for a whole heap of trouble. I anticipate a disappointed shake of the head by our newly appointed leader very soon.

POPSThe Stories Behind 11 Famous Web Sites Too much to clip, but if you go to the source you can read about them all, and you can link to them. Of course I embellished, and added Clipmarks to the list. Where would this clip be without Clipmarks?! Oh, and the first thing was just a silly thing I clipped off of B3ta, it was not really supposed to be in this clip, but oh well.

POPSBranchflower Report: Contradicts Itself: Ignores Facts and Law
No, indeed, Sen. French and Mr. Branchflower dearly hope most Americans won't look past the headlines generated by this ridiculous farce of a report. French and Branchflower hope that Americans will be misled into thinking this report is from someone whose judgment or opinions actually count for something — instead of being from a hitman hired to complete a political hatchet job, as it actually is. This report changes absolutely nothing, except that it will be manipulated politically by Obama supporters and Palin haters in an attempt to drive more potential voters into taking sides with Trooper Mike Wooten — a proven child abuser (Tasered his own 10-year-old stepson on a lark) . . . . UPDATE Even the Anchorage Daily News is misrepresenting I just received an email update from it in which it claims that "Today Alaska legislators found Palin did abuse her power in the 'Troopergate' controversy." That's absolutely false — the Alaska Legislature is not in session

POPSSteve Jobs didn't invent the iPod? A hoax? A British citizen, Kane Kramer, now lays claim to the invention; he claims he did so back in 1979. In reading the pdf document, it seems like something feasible only with the internet, which was only available en mass since the early 1990s (so his central server idea holds no water with me). I am calling this a hoax.
