Three more quit over Nutt sacking
sincitykitty
by sincitykitty  11-11-2009
Professor Nutt was sacked more than a week ago in response to views he expressed in an academic journal in January and a lecture he later gave at King's College London. He spoke out against the government's decision to toughen penalties for possessing marijuana and argued that the drug is less harmful than tobacco or alcohol.

Disgusting: Polish politicians and artists speak in support of Polanski
Lexica
by Lexica  10-2-2009
Very disappointed in Wałęsa. More: So there we have it, a curious -- or not -- double standard. Pedophiles are considered degenerates in Poland now, undeserving of human rights. Except when they are famous filmmakers with powerful friends, that is. An inescapable lesson from Polanski's saga so far: if you are going to rape a child, don't be a plumber or auto mechanic; be famous and rich. Then justice will be slow and lenient for you, and people will forgive your crime. Nah, they'll be clamoring to speak out in your defense.

The United Nations declared 2nd October International day of nonviolence and as such it will be marked throughout the world. We invite you to gather together in the Pioneers' Park, on Friday 2nd October 16h, in order to once again pointed out that violence is not acceptable to Serbia and that human rights should not be (ograničavana) threats of violence. Together we will invite the Serbian authorities to vigorously apply the law and guarantee the freedom of every citizen and express solidarity with those who were victims of violence or who are not able to enjoy human rights because of threats.

In support of the UC Faculty/Staff/Student walkout
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  9-24-2009    2
My wife is one of the thousands of UC staff who are walking the union picket lines today. Save public education! Pay those who teach and keep the university running rather than lining the pockets of the upper-floor executives! Note: If you're inclined to get all anti-union, my advice is this: save it. Not today, not on this clip. Because my wife & her co-workers and fellow union members are walking the line today. And I'll ban you in a heartbeat if you feel like getting up in my grill over this. Save it for another day.

"Why I threw the shoe," by Muntazer al-Zaidi

From the piece: "When I threw the shoe in the face of the criminal, George Bush, I wanted to express my rejection of his lies, his occupation of my country, my rejection of his killing my people. My rejection of his plundering the wealth of my country, and destroying its infrastructure. And casting out its sons into a diaspora."

Why we SHOULD give illegal immigrants health care coverage
Lexica
by Lexica  9-15-2009    9
What's more important? Posturing over "no coverage for illegals!!!" or actually saving money and improving health care for all? More: What's more, employers currently have a clear economic incentive to hire undocumented immigrants: they don't require coverage. A plan that mandates insurance for native workers but not their illegal counterparts actually makes life harder on the blue-collar Americans competing for jobs (and railing against immigrants) because it means that hiring them will cost more than hiring a recent transplant from Mexico City…. But despite the potential economic upside, the right shouldn't stress: America won't insure its illegal immigrants any time soon. "The hard thing here is that the current state of perception on immigration is eroding our sense of social solidarity… People simply don't want money going to people on the other side of the tracks."

Africa MPs Cheer Lockerbie Bomber
merrie
by merrie  9-9-2009    2
September 9, 2009 Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi has made his first public appearance since receiving a hero’s welcome on his return to Libya. The BBC’s Rana Jawad, in Tripoli, says a nurse wheeled Megrahi to a small stage in the lecture hall at the city’s medical centre. He appeared to be frail, wearing a surgeon’s mask that covered most of his face and a colourful, sequined traditional skullcap, she says. After he started coughing, he was immediately wheeled off the stage. Our reporter says it seemed a carefully orchestrated event intended to send a signal to the Scottish, British and US governments. Hey, let’s send a few more hundred billion taxpayer dollars to Africa.

Just Call Him the Green Pitchfork Czar by Andy McCarthy
merrie
by merrie  9-6-2009    3
(I'd wager, the very top) overrode any objections. The issue here isn't process. It's that Obama picked Van Jones because Obama adheres to Jones's Alinskyite views and tactics, and is entirely comfortable with what most of the public would see as the horrifying specter of Jones managing how billions of public dollars are spent. Mr. Jones’s involvement in the 1990s with a group called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement prompted recent accusations by conservative critics that he associated with Communists. The group, according to a post-mortem written by some of its founders, was an anti-capitalist, antiwar organization committed to achieving “solidarity among all oppressed peoples” with “direct militant action.” Hold on there. Direct-action? The use of intimidation and extortion tactics, including law-breaking, to achieve political results? Where have we heard that before?

Low-wage workers are often cheated by their employers
Lexica
by Lexica  9-2-2009
More: The researchers said one of the most surprising findings was how successful low-wage employers were in pressuring workers not to file for workers’ compensation. Only 8 percent of those who suffered serious injuries on the job filed for compensation to pay for medical care and missed days at work stemming from those injuries… The study found that women were far more likely to suffer minimum wage violations than men, with the highest prevalence among women who were illegal immigrants. Among American-born workers, African-Americans had a violation rate nearly triple that for whites… The report found that 57 percent of workers sampled had not received mandatory pay documents the previous week, which are intended to help make sure pay is legal and accurate. Of workers who receive tips, 12 percent said their employer had stolen some of the tips."

I've been reading more and more about this guy...and he scares me. No matter what role he plays in our government, the fact is, he's not elected, hasn't been appointed and then confirmed by the Congress. He's just 'THERE'. He has the President's ear. Of course, I previously clipped a piece about Obama's membership in the New Party. So maybe not just his ear - but his heart?

Appeal for a worldwide reading for Democracy and Freedom in Iran

by Johanna_G  8-27-2009    1
But the men of God had hardly seized power when they began liquidating a large section of the opposition, executing thousands of dissenters and destroying the indigenous culture in favour of so-called Islamisation, downgrading women as second-class citizens and subjecting art and literature to strict censorship. With the exception of brief uprisings by individuals or small groups, the population remained patient for a long time – for thirty years. But now the scandalous manipulation of the Presidential elections of June 12th has proved too much to bear.

The Convicts, founded in 2004 as Australia's first gay rugby team, are the current titleholders of the Bingham Cup, the International Gay Rugby Association's world championship. "To have representatives of the national rugby union team taking a public and positive stance against homophobia speaks volumes to counter negative stereotypes," Sydney Convicts president Charlie Winn said. "It also sends a message to the many young players that their role models at the professional level accept diversity and support our community." http://news.yahoo.com/s/advocate/20090818/ts_advocate/jocks_pose_for_photos_to_fight_homophobia

The link between race and the healthcare protests
zizzy
by zizzy  8-20-2009    3
Many of the people who wish for the America that the Founding Fathers envisioned, don't realize that the FFs would view them with disdain because of their social class. They mistakenly believe that the Founding Father's would rescue and elevate them as equals out of shared pigmentation solidarity. Sure, they'd elevate them above darker pigmented people, but only to the status of pawn. Former Chinese Premier Chou En-lai once observed: "One of the delightful things about Americans is that they have absolutely no historical memory."
