POPS What's This? A Martian Tatoo? Amazing new pics from Mars Orbiter. To our human visual conceptions of what things look like and/or what things should look like out of any real context this picture resembles rolls of fleshly look-alikes and the bluish scribbles appear to some of us, as something Earthly. If you want more on the dust devils the links that are not from Wikipedia, and are from NASA are pretty informative. There are also picture of rising columns here on Earth.

POPSIs There Global Warming on Other Planets in the Solar System? Martian climate is primarily driven by dust and albedo and there is little empirical evidence that Mars is showing long term warming. Neptune's orbit is 164 years so current brightening is a seasonal response (Neptune's southern hemisphere is heading into summer). Triton's warming is due to the moon approaching an extreme southern summer, a season that occurs every few hundred years. Jupiter's storms are fueled by the planet's own internal heat (the sun's energy is 4% the level of solar energy at Earth). When several storms merge into one large storm (eg - Red Spot Jr), the planet loses its ability to mix heat, causing warming at the equator and cooling at the poles.

POPSJupiter Impact Photo Spectra collected by various observatories may help identify what the impactor was, since a large amount of water at the impact location would hint at a comet as the source. “We will also compare the observations with those collected during 15 years ago,” since that was a known comet, Marchis says. Without having seen it, scientists can’t tell how large the object was. “But the impact scar we’re seeing is about the same size as one of Jupiter’s big storms, Oval BA, Fletcher told New Scientist. “That, I believe, is about the size of the Earth.” Marchis says Jupiter may be protecting Earth from getting hit by such objects. “The solar system would have been a very dangerous place if we did not have Jupiter,” he told New Scientist. “We should thank our Giant Planet for suffering for us. Its strong gravitational field is acting like a shield protecting us from comets coming from the outer part of the solar system.” newscientist.com

POPSMassive Storm Erupts On The Surface Of The Sun "Sunspot 1024 is crackling with B- and C-class solar flares. The activity is so intense, astronomers can't seem to take a picture of the sunspot without catching a flare in action. Pete Lawrence sends this example from his backyard observatory in Selsey, UK: 'Active region 1024 is putting on a fantastic show,' says Lawrence. 'The center of this region is incredibly bright and fluctuating.' Solar observers haven't seen an active region like this one in more than two years. It is big, complex, and rapidly growing..." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * But not to worry: the Democrats' "Crap-and-Tax" plan will save our climate from the effects of solar storms. Once again, Barack Obama reads bald-face lies to the American people from his teleprompter http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2009/06/green-gestapo.html

POPS “climate change” throughout the entire solar system.
Here are some highlights: Sun: More activity since 1940 than in previous 1150 years, combined Mercury: Unexpected polar ice discovered, along with a surprisingly strong intrinsic magnetic field … for a supposedly “dead” planet Venus: 2500% increase in auroral brightness, and substantive global atmospheric changes in less than 30 years Earth: Substantial and obvious world-wide weather and geophysical changes Mars: “Global Warming,” huge storms, disappearance of polar icecaps Jupiter: Over 200% increase in brightness of surrounding plasma clouds Saturn: Major decrease in equatorial jet stream velocities in only ~20 years, accompanied by surprising surge of X-rays from equator Uranus: “Really big, big changes” in brightness, increased global cloud activity Neptune: 40% increase in atmospheric brightness Pluto: 300% increase in atmospheric pressure, even as Pluto recedes farther from the Sun This Report’s scientific data, from a variety of

POPSNew spaceship force field makes Mars trip possible Now this has been confirmed in the laboratory in the UK using apparatus originally built to work on fusion. By recreating in miniature a tiny piece of the Solar Wind, scientists working in the laboratory were able to confirm that a small "hole" in the Solar Wind is all that would be needed to keep the astronauts safe on their journey to our nearest neighbours. Dr. Ruth Bamford, one of the lead researchers at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, said, "These initial experiments have shown promise and that it may be possible to shield astronauts from deadly space weather".

POPSStrange things happen at full moon On the moon's dayside this effect is counteracted somewhat by sunlight: Photons knock electrons back off the surface, lessening the negative charge. But on the night side, electrons accumulate and the charge can climb to thousands of volts. The extreme differences in charge might cause dust to fly from the negative night side to the less-negative day side, becoming strongest along the regions where the sun is rising or setting. Astronauts walking on the charged terrain might get electrified like sock from a hot dryer. "Touching another astronaut, a doorknob, a piece of sensitive electronics — any of these simple actions could produce an unwelcome zap."
