Now this is exciting news! This type of innovation is exactly what the world needs to help us lose our dependency on oil. It is also the type of progress that i believe will spur the economy out of its very nasty funk.

But unrestricted greenhouse gas emissions are by far the greatest preventable threat to Americans' LLPH. Yet the government spends virtually nothing to fight global warming -- certainly no significant amount of new money has been allocated for this major threat (the Clinton administration tried, but the Gingrich Congress reversed that effort, reducing or zeroing out every program aimed at climate mitigation or even adaptation). Indeed, most conservatives, including John McCain, oppose even continuing existing incentives for carbon-mitigating strategies like solar and wind power. Conservatives in Congress seem likely to strongly oppose any major effort at a legislative solution (see "Anti-science conservatives must be stopped").

Solution to global warming: Floating cities
shandora
by shandora  7-4-2008
The 'Lilypad City' would float around the world as an independent and fully self-sustainable home. With a lake at its centre to collect and purify rainwater, it would be accessed by three separate marinas and feature artificial mountains to offer the inhabitants a change of scenery from the seascape. Power for the central accommodation hub is provided through a series of renewable energy sources including solar panels on the mountain sides, wind turbines and a power station to harness the energy of the waves.

A Giant Solar Tower Could Power the Future
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-3-2008    8
On a sunny day, the air at the top of the tower would be 70 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius), whereas the air in the greenhouse could reach 160 degrees Fahrenheit (70 degrees Celsius). As this hot air escapes up the tower at 34 mph (15 meters per second), it spins 32 turbines that generate up to 200 megawatts of electricity. Even with all this power, the solar tower is less than one tenth as efficient as solar cells in converting the sun's energy into electricity. The advantage for a solar tower is that its materials are much less expensive.

Voyager 2 Finds Lopsided Solar System
HobbeLink
by HobbeLink  7-3-2008
Still transmitting, the three-decade-old craft encounters turbulence in solar wind. Hurtling through space 31 years after its launch, the Voyager 2 spacecraft has sent back the most detailed view yet of the shock wave that marks the thinning of the solar wind, the charged particles streaming from the sun. That would mean they have exited the solar system and entered the interstellar medium. NASA engineers estimate that both probes' plutonium power packs have the potential to keep them broadcasting data until 2025. If we're lucky, Jokippi says, they'll let us know what they find.

Solar Energy in India and the Rise of Global Awareness
Naomi-K
by Naomi-K  7-1-2008
Very interesting: "per capita emissions." Does this mean that in the future, you could be taxed differently than your neighbour depending on what car you drive, how far you commute, how much you recycle. It's already slightly that way, for instance you can get tax rebates for buying solar panels. If it was broken down into 'per capita emissions' though, this would be a very different story.

Information Unlimited - Free Energy,Solar Energy
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  6-28-2008    2
In the 1920s T. Henry Moray invented a free energy device that reportedly output 50 kilowatts of electricity. It could not be explained by standard science at that time. The electricity exhibited a strange cold current characteristic where thin wires could conduct appreciable power without heating. Moray suffered ruthless suppression, and in 1939 the device was destroyed. Frontier science lecturer and author Moray B. King explains the invention with todays science: Modern physics recognizes that vacuum contains tremendous energy called the zero-point energy. A way to coherently activate it appears surprisingly simple: First create a glow plasma or corona. Then abruptly pulse it. Other inventors have discovered this approach (sometimes unwittingly) and created novel energy devices, but they too were suppressed. The common pattern of their technologies clarified the fundamental operating principle. The purpose of this book is to inspire engineers and inventors so that a new energy source

Feds Halt New Solar Projects
Wisco
by Wisco  6-27-2008
This really doesn't make any damned sense at all. The piece goes on: While proponents of solar energy agree on the need for a sweeping environmental study, many believe that the freeze is unwarranted. Some, like Ms. Gordon, whose company has two pending proposals for solar plants on public land, say small solar energy businesses could suffer if they are forced to turn to more expensive private land for development. Of course, public land is also drilled for oil. But the administration's attitude toward that is "full speed ahead!"

Feds Place Moratorium On New Solar Projects On Public Land
merrie

"This could completely stunt the growth of the industry," said Holly Gordon, vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs for Ausra, a solar thermal energy company in Palo Alto. The manager of the bureau's environmental impact study, Linda Resseguie, said many factors must be considered when deciding whether to allow solar projects on the scale being proposed, among them the Advertisement impact of construction and transmission lines on native vegetation and wildlife.
