APOD: A Solar Prominence Erupts in STEREO
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  10-20-2009    5
The combined perspective of STEREO will help astronomers better understand the mechanisms for the creation and evolution of prominences, coronal mass ejections, and flares.

Massive Storm Erupts On The Surface Of The Sun
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2009    1
"Sunspot 1024 is crackling with B- and C-class solar flares. The activity is so intense, astronomers can't seem to take a picture of the sunspot without catching a flare in action. Pete Lawrence sends this example from his backyard observatory in Selsey, UK: 'Active region 1024 is putting on a fantastic show,' says Lawrence. 'The center of this region is incredibly bright and fluctuating.' Solar observers haven't seen an active region like this one in more than two years. It is big, complex, and rapidly growing..." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * But not to worry: the Democrats' "Crap-and-Tax" plan will save our climate from the effects of solar storms. Once again, Barack Obama reads bald-face lies to the American people from his teleprompter http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2009/06/green-gestapo.html

Fielding feels heat over solar flare theory
tabsey
by tabsey  6-8-2009
Senator Fielding is the only rep of the religious right in this country. He spoke to the conspiracy theorists, obviously. The only people who don't see carbon emissions are people who make money from it. ( I reserve my opinion of others who support this view.)

Scientists Have No Idea What's Up With the Sun

Revelation: 16:8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was permitted to scorch people with fire. 16:9 Thus people were scorched by the terrible heat, yet they blasphemed the name of God, who has ruling authority over these plagues, and they would not repent and give him glory.

Americans unprepared for doomsday
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  3-19-2009    2
"Even assuming someone eventually developed an above-ground super-house able to withstand the 1,200-degree temperature and massive force of lava and ash rain that would result from a globe-shattering asteroid impact, its occupants would be unprepared for the ensuing radical climate change," Olheiser said. "By the same token, the average household lacks the 1.2 million gallons of heating oil needed to withstand the prolonged sub-zero temperatures of another protracted Ice Age—perhaps the most shocking of the public's many oversights."

Planetary line up excites the sun
pokkets
by pokkets  7-2-2008    2
The equatorial region of the sun spins more rapidly than the poles, and this differential rotation winds up the magnetic field lines like a rubber band sunspots typically appear wherever these magnetic field lines bubble to the surface. They still have to do more testing, but it makes more sense than other theories such as tidal forces, or the movement of the sun around the solar system's center of gravity, which don't seem to have a significant enough effect.
