POPSEclipse-Watchers Worldwide Gear Up For Friday's Event Before there was a scientific explanation for eclipses, myth and mystery was pervasive. Many cultures thought a demon or dragon was devouring the sun. In ancient China, "any unusual phenomenon involving celestial bodies was noted for potential omens, either good or bad, that might befall the current Emperor," according to Sten Odenwald of the department of physics at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. The ancient Chinese banged pots and drums to shoo the frightful sun-eating character away. In India, people would immerse themselves in water to help the sun fight the dragon. Even nowadays many myths persist. In Egypt, as one example, children are often kept indoors with windows covered or shades drawn during an eclipse. Risk of eye injury Eclipses can indeed be dangerous

POPS300-Year-Old Solar Eclipse Courtesy of those great folks at APoD, the oldest known (European) depiction of a total solar eclipse. Earlier depictions may exist in Asian sources - Arab and Chinese astronomers, for instance, made accurate notes on the supernova of 1054, which formed what is now the Crab Nebula, aka M1 & NGC 1952. The Chinese also kept accurate records of sunspots and comets long before other parts of the world did.

A Spectrum of Opinions This book presents a spectrum of opinions, models and theories as well as some experimental evidence to elucidate the various approaches within this on-going scientific debate. It will enable readers to decide for themselves which hypotheses and which directions of study appear most promising. The underlying assumption made by the editor of this volume is that consciousness should be understood using the combined intellectual potential of modern physics and the life sciences. Contributions have been gathered from a number of scientists representing a spectrum of disciplines taking a biophysics-based approach to consciousness. In their attempts to identify and understand the roots of consciousness, the authors variously exploit experimental, theoretical and even philosophical approaches. The volume begins with a general overview written jointly by Nancy Woolf and Jack Tuszynski. This includes a detailed synopsis of the further contributions, together with a

POPSLunar Eclipse to Come Saturday It will take practically no effort to witness what promises to be a beautiful celestial event this weekend. Simply walk outside at sunset on Saturday and look to the east. Viewers in Europe, Africa, western Asia and part of Antarctica are in position to watch the entire eclipse. In the Americas, the eclipse will be underway by the time the moon rises, according to NASA scientists. The full eclipse ends at 6:57 p.m. EST. After that, the moon will slowly shed its reddish cloak and turn sparklingly bright — provided there are no Earthly clouds in the way to block the view.Parts of the eclipse, the first of two that will occur this year, will be visible on every continent, said Fred Espenak, with NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

POPSMost spectacular view in the Solar System Few sights in the solar system are more strikingly beautiful than softly hued Saturn embraced by the shadows of its stately rings. The Cassini Orbiter on its mission in deep space caught this rare occasion of Saturn eclipsing the Sun.
