POPSBiofuel Craze Could Starve Millions Joachim von Braun, director general of the U.S.-based International Food Policy Research Institute supports a moratorium on grain- and oilseed-based biofuels but not for sugar-cane-based fuels. Sugar-cane is the source of many sweeteners used in breakfast cereals and soft drinks. We should start seeing those prices begin to shoot up. I looks like we are just going to have to find another alternative to the biofuels sources.

POPSSweet Misery: Aspartame Documentary Dr. Woodrow C. Monte wrote: “Methanol has no therapeutic properties and is considered only as a toxicant. The ingestion of two teaspoons is considered lethal in humans” (Monte, Woodrow, “Aspartame: Methanol and the Public Health”, Journal of Applied Nutrition, Vol. 36, Number 1, 1984, p. 44). Though it can hardly be considered good fortune to have an immediate reaction to aspartame, at least you are spared the potential long-term ticking time-bomb of a large array of neurological illnesses. These include, but are not limited to Brain Cancer, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Graves Disease, Chronic Fatigue, MS and Epilepsy.

POPSNYC proposes more fruit and veg carts There is a cap on food carts at the moment, with no more approvals for things like hot dogs, pretzels, and soft drinks. This cap is planned to be lifted, with the only factor needed to get a cart approved is that it be selling healthy food. Fruit and vegetables for a start, and the idea can maybe be expanded to include other foods that are as healthy as they are quick. People keep talking about diets. They are too short term. We need to get into the habit of finding ways of eating correctly that can fit in with our lifestyles. There are so many things we need beyond a grease, sugar and caffeine hit. Imagine a car. It has a tank full of gas, but no water in the radiator, or brake fluid, and the tyres are a bit flat. How far is that car going to go. Our bodies have a great capacity to heal themselves, the least we can do is help, and give them something to work with

POPSSan Fransisco may put a tax on pop & sugary drinks
I've been a proponent of this for a LONG time. I'm not talking about 100% fruit juices, I'm talking about "Cocktails" (drinks laden with high fructose corn syrup & other sugars placed in artificially sweetened drinks). Pop is a key target IMO, it is heavily laces with sugar. Though I think all pop (non-diet or otherwise) should be taxed. The money raised from these taxes should go towards subsidizing 100% pure juices & blends (which still must contain 100% real juice, just not of one variety). I also think tax should be places on all junk foods like chips, chocolates & candies, fast foods, and high-slat/fat processed foods. The money from those taxes should be used to subsidize the price of vegetables, pure dairy & meats (of the non-processed variety). Too many families eat crap because they can't afford good food. I remember this all to well growing up. We lived off kraft dinner, mr. noodles, "fish sticks" and other processed foods because real food was too expensive.

POPSIndiana strange laws Smoking in the state legislature building is banned, except when the legislature is in session. Liquor stores may not sell milk. Check forgery can be punished with public flogging up to 100 stripes. Grocery stores may not sell any type of cold liquor. You can get out of paying for a dependent’s medical care by praying for him/her. Pedestrians crossing the highway at night are prohibited from wearing tail lights. No one may catch a fish with his bare hands. Men are prohibited from standing in a bar. You are not allowed to carry a cocktail from the bar to a table. The waiter or waitress has to do it. “Spiteful Gossip” and “talking behind a person’s back” are illegal. You are required to pour your drink into a glass. It is against the law to pass a horse on the street. If any person has a puppet show, wire dancing or tumbling act in the state of Indiana and receives money for it, they will be fined $3 under the Act to Prevent Immoral Practices.

POPSNutraSweet Story: Rumsfeld and Aspartame Read the whole article to see how this poisonous neurotoxin was pushed on the unwary and ignorant public by former Searle CEO Donald (neocon) Rumsfeld (who probably profited from the stock options afterward). Stop eating anything with NutraSweet if you value your brain function.

POPSEnergy drinks jolt blood pressure There are warnings on these drinks which tell consumers to limit the number of drinks per day, but these are more seen to be suggestions. Often they are consumed in large numbers even if only to maintain the 'buzz' Of course caffeine is a traditional means of achieving the same effects, but very often the negative effects of caffeine and taurine combined are not considered, because they do not seem to be relative to young and healthy people. The caffeine and taurine with their diuretic effect can make the drinker thirsty. While the effects were considered to be of more concern for people with already high blood pressure and heart problems, the volumes that are consumed, and the likely continued use warrants more study. There is the chance that benefits can be seen from the studies. For example they could be used in cases of low blood pressure.
