NEA recomends Alinsky as teaching aid
n2sooners
by n2sooners  11-12-2009
I love how it isn't 'personal terrorism' if you just deem someone to be a symbol and not a person. Maybe that is why the left is so sympathetic to the Fort Hood shooter. They don't consider those dead as people, but only as symbols of something they can't stand.

Economic Stimulation
merrie
by merrie  11-5-2009    1
I’m a little late to today’s economic-stimulus exasperation party. Sorry. I was busy working at my unstimulated private-sector job, which uses pulp, ink, trucks, pens, notebooks and a lot of eletronics plus electricity and employs hundreds of taxpayers directly and indirectly to tell people how the hacks are trying to shaft them in Boston. It was great. I enjoyed it. Even though, far from looking for or getting any support, we’ve had to fight the government over simple things like the freedom to enter business relationships with other news organizations that might have made us more financially viable. Thank you, Ted Kennedy, liberal lion.

White America has never liked social insurance for people of color
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  9-16-2009    3
More: Meanwhile, there has been a massive expansion in government-sponsored welfare going disproportionately to the white and affluent. What the political scientist Christopher Howard calls the hidden welfare state includes the tax-favored employer-provided health insurance that most working-age Americans depend on, as well as the home mortgage interest deduction and the childcare and child tax credits. Affluent and educated workers are more likely to work for employers who provide private health benefits than are low-skilled workers and employees of small businesses. Personal tax benefits like the home mortgage interest deduction are available only to the top half of households who pay federal income taxes, and are unavailable to lower-income workers who pay payroll taxes but no income taxes. In many cases, the benefits of this tax-credit welfare state increase with income.

ACORN: No Business Like Poverty Business
merrie
by merrie  9-13-2009    2
ACORN proves the axiom of the modern welfare state " that there's no business like the poverty business. Although ACORN runs a large conglomerate of social-activist anti-poverty front groups out of a New Orleans hub, it is registered as a nonprofit corporation in Arkansas, which does not require financial disclosure. This has allowed it keep its own finances shielded from public scrutiny, while demanding transparency from all others. The group's nonprofit status refers only to its corporate form. That is, ACORN must be organized for a public purpose and have no stockholders, unlike a regular corporation. However, it is not tax exempt under federal law, since it does advocacy and lobbying that would run afoul of IRS restrictions, such as endorsing political candidates. ACORN was started in 1970 by Stephen Wade Rathke, a former SDS radical and Boston-based community organizer. The group now consists of so many interlocking associations, corporations, and affiliates . . .

Has Japan's Dolphin Slaughter Been Prevented?
papananook
by papananook  9-3-2009
Today, the dolphin slaughter was set to begin in Taiji, but the tides there may have changed. Here's a dispatch from O'Barry who has just returned to Japan for the start of the killing season: When I got off the bus at the Cove this afternoon, I was accompanied by my son Lincoln O'Barry's film crew, a crew from Associated Press, Der Spiegel (the largest magazine in Germany), and the London Independent. No dolphins and no dolphin killers. We would not have had a story at all, except for the police who were there, waiting all day for us to appear. Nine policemen came to talk to us... And as I was talking with the police, as the international journalists stood around listening, suddenly a camera crew arrived from Japan! And then another! And then still another! You have to understand that this is SO IMPORTANT. These TV stations have REFUSED to cover the story in Taiji for years and years. NOW, for the first time, they have shown up, with cameras rolling. T

A well-regulated...
kmcolo
by kmcolo  9-1-2009
I am, in general, a liberal free-marketeer. Light and efficient government regulation is needed and in some sectors more of it than in others, but taken in a gross overall picture, I tend to agree with the maxim "the less government the better". It seems the Japanese have just decided to take a different route. I for one still think the "American model" with some adjustments for context is more honest, at a genetic level, to the human experience and thus is more likely to promote innovative solutions to problems. But I also know that, in nature, diversity is resilience so perhaps it is good that the Japanese have decided on a different course. One that, perhaps, fits their context better than the "American model" (or what they took to be the "American model") did. We will see how this plays out now that history has restarted its engines.

To Members of Congress
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2009
And finally, to set a new record: Cash For Clunkers, failed in just over 5 weeks! It took good dependable cars (that were the best some people could afford) and replaced them with high-priced and less-affordable cars, mostly Japanese. A good percentage of the profits went out of the country. And the American taxpayers take the hit for Congress' generosity in burning three billion more of our dollars on failed experiments. So with a perfect 100% failure rate and a record that proves that "services" you shove down our throats are failing faster and faster, you want Americans to believe you can be trusted with a government-run health care system? 20% of our entire economy? With all due respect, Are you f***ing crazy?

Never unfollow someone just because they unfollowed you
Aribeth
by Aribeth  7-16-2009    4
"In fact, a 1996 study found that people in communal relationships were more likely than those in exchange relationships to view demands or offers of reciprocity as a betrayal. If, on the other hand, the ex-follower isn't a friend, you have an exchange relationship: a mutually beneficial trade in links, information, and follower counts. Funny thing is, the unfollowing doesn't really change that. Sure, you can't count the person as a follower, but you can still get perspective and yucks in 140-character bursts. Meanwhile, you contribute to their influence and follower tally. And while having a huge network is good for the ego, being in the know beats being popular any day." I guess the same goes for CM. :-)

Palin, Cloward, Piven and Kafka
merrie
by merrie  7-5-2009    1
Some of the complaints her legal team responded to were simply absurd. Complaint alleging interference in a job hiring was filed under the name of Edna Birch, a busybody character on the British soap opera Emmerdale. Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said no one by that name could be found living in Alaska and the filer refused to use a real name, so the complaint was dismissed Feb. 20. Forget about the fairness or irrationality of this complaint. The mere fact that she had to engage an attorney to respond to it means anyone with a computer, printer and a few stamps can force a politician to incur thousands of dollars in legal fees. And while these sort of Kafkaesque tribunals have normally been reserved for prominent Americans, we might all get to participate in the future.

CapTrade shows ObamaDems have turned their backs on the poor
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  6-30-2009
ObamaDems' differing goals and definitions for helping little guys and working people? "President Obama and the Democrats claim to favor the poor as they decry the suffering of the poor. As a Democrat of 18 years, so did I. In fact, I cared so much that I left the Dem Party in 2000 convinced by two decades of evidence before my eyes that the policies democrats pursue are proven failures at alleviating the suffering of the poor." "I assumed that the suffering we all alluded to was peoples' inability to afford necessities via the fruits of the labor and have an opportunity for moving up the economic ladder or for the middle class to increase their wealth and prosperity over time." "Over time it became increasingly difficult to maintain the notion that Democratic Party leaders shared the same definition. After the Cap and Trade vote it is impossible. "

“When women are not a productive part of a country’s economy and society, poverty persists,” says Greene. “Adolescent girls in the developing world are an enormous opportunity to transform their families, communities and countries, making the world a better place for everyone.” Greene spoke of the great potential for women’s clubs to reach out to women and girls in the developing world. She urged attendees to raise awareness in their communities of the importance of girls and advocate for policies and investments targeted toward improving their lives.

Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  6-19-2009    1
"Clergy were put on government salary, hence subjected to state authority. “The parsons will be made to dig their own graves,” Hitler cackled. “They will betray their God to us. They will betray anything for the sake of their miserable little jobs and incomes.” Following the Jacobin example, the Nazis replaced the traditional Christian calendar. The new year began on January 30 with the Day of the Seizure of Power. Each November the streets of central Munich were dedicated to a Nazi Passion play depicting Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch. The martyrdom of Horst Wessel and his “old fighters” replaced Jesus and the apostles. Plays and official histories were rewritten to glorify pagan Aryans bravely fighting against Christianizing foreign armies. Anticipating some feminist pseudo history, witches became martyrs to the bloodthirsty oppression of Christianity."
