What does "Fascism" look like? 14 Characteristics
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  8-19-2009    4
  10. Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology, insofar as it is fundamentally aristocratic, and aristocratic and militaristic elitism cruelly implies contempt for the weak . 11. In such a perspective everybody is educated to become a hero. 12. Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. 13. Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism , a qualitative populism, one might say. 14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak.

Dear Jon Stewart - Please Change Your Name Back to Leibowitz
kelsoweikal
by kelsoweikal  7-27-2009    2
This is a great opinion piece! If you read the whole article, you'll even get a nod to Michael Jackson and the author's affirmation of the importance of making our external image line up with our internal self-identity. Our bigotry as a society will subside only when those of us who don't subscribe in one way or another to the majority have the courage to be ourselves. This is fundamental to queer theory, diversity, and multi-culturalism...but the costs of facing social ostracization are steep. Be brave everyone! The world needs to be a place where individuals can be themselves at every level!

"ISNA Rejects All Expressions of Racism and Bigotry"
merrie
by merrie  7-16-2009    1
Safi is coy about specifics, but here they are: the Investigative Project on Terrorism published a report yesterday, "'Mainstream' Islamist Convention Features Hate Speech and Hezbollah Defense" in which it broke the news that the conference "featured speakers spewing raw anti-Semitism, homophobic rhetoric and defense of the terrorist group Hezbollah." It then provides details on several speakers but zeroes in on Warith Deen Umar, the former head of the New York state prison chaplain program who lost his job after the Wall Street Journal exposed his pro-bin Ladin views in front-page story in February 2003. Umar appeared at ISNA on July 5 to promote a new book, Jews for Salaam: The Straight Path to Global Peace, in the context of a "Meet The Author" program. In the course of it, he attacked "unholy Jews" such as Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod, two of President Obama's top aides, by name as part of a conspiracy "to control the world."

Deepak Chopra: What is Sarah Palin's appeal?
Lexica
by Lexica  9-15-2008
In psychological terms the shadow is that part of the psyche that hides out of sight, countering our aspirations, virtue, and vision with qualities we are ashamed to face: anger, fear, revenge, violence, selfishness, and suspicion of “the other.” For millions of Americans, Obama triggers those feelings, but they don’t want to express them. He is calling for us to reach for our higher selves, and frankly, that stirs up hidden reactions of an unsavory kind.

The Key To Happiness
debbyski

"At this stage, what does a society have to look like in order to create more free choice and more happiness? The study indicates that you need democratization and, most important of all, social tolerance." The study suggests that religious faith and social tolerance are a winning combination. Which leaves me wondering: Perhaps people in the U.S. would all be happier if more ministers, rabbis, imams and priests conducted more gay marriages."

How al Qaeda Will Perish
merrie
by merrie  3-25-2008
Al-Sahab, media arm of al Qaeda urgent call for recruits. "We call on the fathers and mothers not to become a barrier between their children and paradise." No less significant is that the rejection of al Qaeda is not a liberal phenomenon, in the sense that it represents a more tolerant mindset or a better opinion of the U.S. On the contrary, this is a revolt of the elders, whether among the tribal chiefs of Anbar province or Islamist godfathers like Sayyed Imam. They have seen through (or punctured) the al Qaeda mythology of standing for an older, supposedly truer form of Islam. Rather, they have come to know al Qaeda as fundamentally a radical movement -- the antithesis of the traditional social order represented by the local sovereign, the religious establishment, the head of the clan and, not least, the father who expects to know the whereabouts of his children. It would be a delightful irony if militant Islam were ultimately undone by a conservative style reaction.

Pablo Ouziel: Failed fascist states
Rasmus
by Rasmus  2-24-2008
Initiatives such as the “Alliance of civilizations” idealistic and irrelevant slogans to be fed to those minorities actively engaged in civil disobedience against the harmful policies being implemented for the promotion of globalization. This situation leaves us with just waiting time before fascist tendencies become even more apparent and a substantial part of this ‘global community’ decides to react against the oppressive forces. Either that, or like the Nazi’s, we keep pushing our ‘liberating ideals’ until the axis of power shifts and we are defeated. Either way, this period of history to which we all belong will undoubtedly remain recorded somewhere as the rise and fall of the American Empire. Like Angkor Wat in Cambodia, hundreds of years from now, anthropologists, historians, sociologists and tourists will wonder at how the thirst for dominance blinded such powerful and developed societies into their inevitable collapse.

The Islamic calendar and Ashura
dakotayii
by dakotayii  1-13-2008    4
The example of Karbala is extraordinary enough to have earned the attention and respect not only of all Muslims, Shia and Sunni alike, but have Western non-Muslims as well. A number of Western historians have referred to as the most revered and meritorious martyr the world has produced, who established the highest standards of excellence of which humanity prides itself. By his actions he affirmed forever that it is both a social and moral duty to act when confronted with such situations in which he lost the battle yet won the war. The martyrdom of Hussein in Karbala remains the symbol for freedom, dignity and rejection of the tyrants.

"Cynical Shyness": Violence of the Loner
abailart
by abailart  11-29-2007    4
Don't know anything about this idea, but certainly would make sense if factored in with other markers of social inadequacy and emotional furnaces such as repressed homosexuality, sexual and social powerlessnes and so on. While the research is on the horrifying instances of killers, I wonder whether the "cynically shy" isolated loner is common to a less extreme defree degree in 'everyday' manifestations of hatred, malevolence, violent language and despair>

Russia and China’s challenge for the west
Forbes Opinions
by Forbes Opinions  10-23-2007
Russia and China no longer espouse communism. But both have nonetheless separately arrived at very similar political doctrines. At home, the formula is authoritarianism, combined with rapid economic growth and nationalism. Internationally, both see their rising economic power as the basis for righting past humiliations.

merrie
by merrie  10-4-2007    2
Renewed signs of the civil war flaring up again following the military's arrest of Shan leaders and rejection of the federal principles proposed by ethnic ceasefire groups at the national convention. Increased deployment of armed forces in areas of ethnic nationalities and persecution of civilians resulting in a massive displacement of people and exodus of refugees into neighboring countries. Increased intimidation, harassment, politically motivated arrests, and restrictions imposed on members of the National League for Democracy (NLD). The Amnesty International estimates that there are about 1,100 political prisoners facing harsh prison conditions and subjected to cruel and inhumane treatment.
